The only two "free" games I've really enjoyed are League of Legends and Rocket League.

I hope if they make a season two of Borderlands, it's just as good or better.

I played Kingdom Hearts Union X back when it was called Kingdom Hearts Unchained X and loved it. It was addictive, fun, and truly free to play. You could buy character medals, but it only enhanced your experience. You didn't have to pay a dime and you could still sink hours upon hours into this game.

I'm excited to pick it back up again when I get a smart phone again.

While these games aren't new by any means, they are free ones that I have enjoyed from a variety of genres. They are all available for free on steam:

Eternal Senia is a short anime style RPG about a girl traveling through a tower to find her sister. The enemy encounters are seamless and don't take you to a separate battle screen, with the exception of bosses. There are 3 different endings if I remember correctly, and a secret minigame where you dodge boulders.

Price is a puzzle style escape the room game with an creepy Alice in Wonderland feel to it. It's an anime art style done in a Victorian motif, and the theme song is very good as well. It's hard to say any more than that without spoiling the story, but there are achievements to unlock for those that care about that.

Doki Doki Literature Club is a visual novel that starts off like a typical dating simulator, but takes an unexpected turn just when you least expect it. It knows more about you than you'd expect from any game, and its unique mechanics have given it its deserved popularity. To truly beat this game without looking anything up will take some ingenuity, and I highly recommend avoiding looking up anything about this game (including reviews) in order to avoid spoilers.

Serena is a point and click horror game about a man in a cabin in the woods trying to find his missing wife. The game progresses by examining various objects, which allows you to recall more memories to progress the story along. Gameplay takes about 2 hours, but unfortunately there is no save feature so it must all be done in one sitting. There is a way to toggle all interactable objects if you get stuck, and the ending really throws you for a loop.

Emily is Away is a nostalgic indie game where you interact with a friend through an instant messenger interface. While your choices can shape the turns the story takes, the ending is always bittersweet. The game also has a sequel of sorts for $4.99 which offers another chat partner and more endings. The messenger interface is pretty customizable as well.

While I stuck with single player games from a variety of generes for this list I could also probably do another one specifically for visual novels if anyone is interested.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Actually I'm just going to go ahead and do it, though I'll try to stick to the lesser known ones. All are rated PG 13 and done in an anime artstyle.

Cinderella's Spark

The story of Cinderella takes a pretty major twist when her sister Agatha takes notice and finally tries to help her. But as you discover her motivations for doing so the story takes a drastic turn from the original, leaving you six endings to discover.

Narcissu 1st & 2nd

Narcissu is a short but sad linear (single ending) visual novel where a boy and girl meet in a hospital, both with terminal illnesses. While I didn't care much for the original game despite its popularity, it comes bundled with a prequel called Narcissu Side 2nd which I greatly enjoyed. It goes through Setsumi's progression from diagnoses to the start of the original game, and details her friendship with another girl she meets at the hospital. The side story is very long and quite sad, so make sure you have some tissues nearby.

SCVN 2 - The esports Visual Novel

While not offering as much as the others on this list in the way of gameplay, it has a strong story and lets you relax. You play the part of someone trying to break into the competitive Starcraft 2 scene by moving to Korea. Once there you must assemble a team to take on the Pro leagues. The game gives you the option to select the gender of the protagonist, and is a fun read even for those who know nothing of Starcraft.

Cinderella Phenomenon

An Otome (Girl romancing boys) visual novel in which you play a princess affected by a fairytale curse causing nobody to remember who you are. You end meeting several others who suffer from their own fairytale curses as well, each resembling a story in a different fairytale. As you choose one of them to partner with to help break your respective curses, you might just find some romance along the way. Featuring fairies, witches, and magic galore.

Sacred Sands

A BoyXBoy visual novel in which you get caught in the middle of a war between two kingdoms and end up getting kidnapped by the enemy. Throughout your stay you find out they aren't really so bad, and decide to help their prince in his quest to save his brother. The game features an incredible 21 endings with 7 romance options , leaving plenty of replay value.

Once again the top 5 are from multiple genres while the final 5 are all visual novels (basically choose your own adventure books with anime style art) but all are worth a playthrough since it won't cost you anything. If you found any you enjoyed feel free to let me know.

I second this one.

It's basically an AIM/MSN messenger simulator, all the way down to band lyrics in your friends bio. Nostalgia overload. If you grew up on internet chat rooms in the early 2000's there's something here for you. Especially if you sometimes reminisce on times gone by or online friends you haven't seen in years.

It was also worth it to drop $5 on the sequel. There's a lot of gems to be found, including a fake version of YouTube with the classic interface and old viral videos.

Someone gave me a copy of Undertale recently. I'm not very far in, but I like it.

Was this for just a day or something? Says it's on sale but not free. It's like four bucks though so still not a bad deal

You can get the First witcher for free form GOG.com. If you download the card game Gwent, then you can then download Witcher for FREEE (http://worthplaying.com/article/2018/4/23/news/108349/)
