Yasumi Matsuno has been on the interview circuit thanks to the Return to Ivalice event going on in Final Fantasy XIV (http://en.brinkwire.com/345890/final-fantasy-tactics-2-what-this-cancelled-sequel-would-have-looked-like/). In one of his more recent interviews (http://blog.livedoor.jp/umadori0726/archives/53518843.html), Matsuno revealed that cult classic PS1 hit Final Fantasy Tactics was actually going to get a direct sequel and the team began working on it before complications on the development side had Sakaguchi and Matsuno agree to cancel the title all-together.

Matsuno even revealed some concept images from what the game would have looked like and it proved to be a bit of the divisive moment for Squaresoft who squabbled with Matsuno about the new visual design and the possibility of outsourcing the title since Matsuno was developing Vagrant Story at the time the game was proposed.

Whereas the original FFT utilized 2D sprites on a 3F Grid, the new games was going to be utilize 2D sprites and move towards a hexagonal grid format instead over a pre-rendered 3D background. There is no word on what the story would have been about.

Tactics did receive a spiritual sequel in the form of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance on the GBA in the early 2000s, which went off to have it's own sequel on the DS called Final Fantasy Tactics A2. FFTactics has been gaining a bit more attention lately as it celebrated it's 20th Anniversary last year. Ramza Beoluve and other characters have also been making cameos in other Square titles like Opera Monia, TheaterRhythm, Rise of Mana, and most recently in Dissidia NT and FFXIV.

Odd that they cancelled it due to artsyle. Especially how FFIX and FFX are rather unique in that regard.
