I'm about 3? hours in and enjoying it so far. I've only given a few hours to Persona 4 so this is more or less my ground level entry.

Okay, so I just beat Kamoshida's Castle.

Thoughts so far:

I love that the mini-boss to reveal the stairs is a dick monster. A slimey dick monster, but you can't tell me that's not a cock.
I named my character :bou::bou::bou::bou: Bucket. Now, you might think I get a giggle every time other characters have :bou::bou::bou::bou: in their dialogue. And sure, that's great. But nothing cracks me up more than Bucket-kun.
Morgana is a weird name for a boy. Mona isn't any better.
This game reminds me a LOT of the Shadow Hearts series (or at least, Covenant).
I've still got a loooong way to go, but I'm considering doing a 100%/guided run after I finish this run. I'm playing it blind right now, and no doubt I'll miss a lot of things I wouldn't have otherwise. But I'm loving this so much that I might have to play it again. We'll see how burnt out I get by the time I finish.

I guess that's sort of her whole thing (subtly) is that she's more than her looks.

I think something I'm enjoying so much about this game so far is that I like all of the characters. Usually by this point there'd be some that I love, some I hate, or at least feel ambivalent about. But I love them all. Granted, your character is kind of voiceless, but Ryuji, Ann, and Morgana are all great. It's made me invested in a way I didn't think I'd end up invested.

Also, Morgana is just like, a split of yourself. Igor keeps talking about rehabilitation, Morgana lost all of his memories, he has a black and white motif JUST LIKE YOU. Calling it now.

One thing I also appreciate (and Ryuji said it like a minute after I thought it), was that the students all apologize to Ann and have a change of heart as well. I'm really excited to see the implication that can have on your actions--if you don't just change the hearts of those doing wrong, but those who were affected by them and/or complicit in their wrong doing.

This is really good story telling, and probably not super subtle or anything, but it really makes you stop and think about how our actions reverberate.

Totally do this. That's what we did, we just played it how we wanted to, and did everything we could first time around. Second time round (NG+ is a gem for smashing the game again) we followed a guide to max out all the social links to see all of those stories play out.

I like Makoto. I like ALL of the characters. And I love her design the most (of who I currently have in my party). She's not a favorite yet, though.

So I'm in the bank, obviously. And I was having a REALLY hard time with those goddamn horses. They're only weak to Bless. The only Bless attack I had was the low RNG insta-kill. I was not having a great time. Then I remembered I had that gem Persona from the museum with all the Ma attacks and fused a new Persona with Makouha and HOLY SHIT this dungeon went from being incredibly painful to dirty easy.

It's amazing what one thing can do to change your play experience. xD

Been there before. When I first played Persona 3 I was really bad about not fusing personas because I'm the sort of person who feels the urge to hoard all of the important things and never use them unless 150% necessary. But with the compendium it's almost always better to just fuse some new ones whenever possible. You can always buy back the old ones for other fusions if need be.

The Metaverse villain is Morgana, or rather, Morgana is the fractured soul of that person (possibly a Persona? Igor mentioned the black masked user can also use multiple personas). Either the goodness in them left to seek out a way to turn them from evil, or something happened to remove Morgana from them and that's why they're doing evil shit in the Metaverse.

Right, so. First off, I want to say thank you to everyone participating in this thread, because everyone's respected my wish that there are no spoilers. Vague winks, sure, but no one is backseat gaming or anything, which is great. I want to experience this on my own, at least for this first playthrough.

That said, and again, I'm sure I'm doing this wrong, but I'm hanging out with Tora and I haven't progressed far in that, but I really LOVE that he's an example that people can have changes of heart without interference. And I think it's really important for the message of a game like this. Sure, he did REALLY shitty things in the past, but he's trying to amend that, and he accepts responsibility for that, without someone like the Ass Giblets stepping in.

Also Yusuke has grown on me and is probably my third least favorite now, Canoe. :p He's also the most attractive character to me at this moment; I've always loved aloof bullshit artist shit, and the fact that he's dirt poor and fills up on ginger before eating sushi makes me like him even more.

I've always told people that they should Play one of the newer Persona titles without a guide the first time. It's just a magical experience overall because finding shit in these games is half the fun. I think I was halfway through the game before I figured out how to brew coffee.

Also, the Sun arcana just rocks as usual. I honestly don't feel there has been a bad one yet in the series, and Toro was definitely one of my favorite Confidants.

I'm gald you're liking Yusuke cause his "starving artist" aspect is what I love about him. His confidant is also really hilarious.

@Fox - No, I honestly liked Mementos as well, especially because of the party banter. Lady gets so much of her quirky nature out of the Mementos sections than she does in the story proper that I feel it's pretty groovy. The better battle mechanics also make it less of a chore. Course I am bias cause I frankly liked Tartarus better the P4's dungeons, but that's largely due to the time saving features the game implemented to make running through it easier and speedier than most rogue-like dungeons.

Man, I already loved Papa Bear, but I love him even more now. He’s gruff, but he’s good. Even if Futaba wasn’t involved, I know he’d still cover for us. It’s such growth that at the beginning of the game he was talking about how you’re a problem kid and calling you a pain in the ass, but now he’s harboring you when you’re actually on the wrong side of the law. His character development has been exceptional, especially for a backgroundish character.

Then stealing Sae’s heart makes so much sense. Playing through the game I was (very stupidly, I admit) confused why the Sae in interrogation was so much different than the Sae we see with Makoto and at work, and I guess that’s it.

What seems to be the issue?

I can’t do it. I’m completely fucking lost in there. Following the left wall—the oldest maze trick—doesn’t work. Hiding from enemies is really difficult, so at best I’m triggering a normal battle, and most of them in there are two shotting me.

Its incredibly frustrating and not fun. I spent over two hours on it last night.

What Personas are you using, and who is your team? Chances are you may just need to upgrade your Personas with the MC since that tends to "fix" most difficulty spikes. From the looks of the enemy layout, all but three enemies are weak to at least one element, so any team build should work as long as the MC has easy access to the missing elements from the rest of the party.

Of anything, try to run from any of the Nordic demons (Valkyrie, Norn, and Skadi) as they have no weaknesses and have some powerful attacks to mess you up, so you'll need to focus on using defenses to stay alive against them like resistance to Physical or Bufu/Garu magic. If these gals are giving you issues, try to run instead.

You might also just be rushing things and may simply need to slow down and be far more cautious so enemies don't get the jump on you. This section is kind of annoying but is thankfully the worst her dungeon has to offer. If you do need to make some Personas cause you've been slacking, I highly advise creating a Rangda with Zio skills (or at least try to recruit one in the dungeon) as well as a Persona with Psychic abilities and possibly resistance/immunity to Zio and physical skills. This will pretty much help with the section after the Maze of Darkness.

For the maze part, just keep using Thief Vision to see your way around and be mindful of grates cause there are at least two points where you'll be blocked and have to use a detour to get around the barrier. Overall, see if you can't upgrade your Personas and just play the dungeon extra cautiously so you don't let it frustrate you.

Yeah have thief vision on all the time - it makes navigation easier and helps you spot the grates that you need to get through.

I agree it is a terrible part of the game but once everything goes right it is only a 10-15 minute section. If you need to watch a walkthrough on Youtube or something to do it - do. If you can endure it there are no other areas this bad.

One tip from me: make as many characters as possible immune to Fear for this section. One of the Shadows in there has 1 move that inflicts the entire party with Fear, and another that insta-kills anyone afflicted by Fear.

Fwiw, I've kept my Persona's upgraded and have skills of all elements! And I have been using thief vision. I'm not sure what exactly isn't working for me, as several guides say the same thing and I've been doing that--like I said, I started doing the left side of the maze thing before I even stooped to using a guide. This is only the second time in the game I've done so, the first being Futaba's palace when I unlocked a switch in a sarcophagus but couldn't find it. So I'm incredibly frustrated that I'm failing at this.

Hopefully being sober and rested helps some.

Ahaha, I got through that (at the least the first part?) very easily. The problem was that, when you go through the second vent, it branches into 3 routes, but you can't see them. So I kept going in a circle, because I could only figure out the two exits.

So it's obvious Sae's treasure is going to be Makoto--they even mention it already has a sort of form, and it's vaguely human-shaped. (Basically I was right, just got the wrong set of characters!) And it actually makes a lot of sense, as an older sister who is caring for her younger sister after a beloved parent's death. She clearly loves Makoto even when she's being harsh, and her pushing Makoto is just wanting the best for her.

You enter Shido's palace and change his heart, but Akechi does something and becomes powerful af and is the true final villain of the game. You can't beat him until Morgana transforms into his true form as Persona--:bou::bou::bou::bou:'s final Persona, and is OP and you're finally able to take him down.

Haru may dress younger, but there is much more to that spitfire. The comic I posted earlier concerning her is not far from actual conversations she has with the party in Mementos. She's got a pretty mean streak and of all the characters you can cheat on in the game, she's the one that comes down on you the hardest. She even activates her special cut-cross animation when you're about to execute an All-Out Assault, which is something only Mitsuru from P3 has really pulled off. A big part of her Confidant is her coming out of her shell and forgoing being a doormat. Her style of clothes are less her own idea of what she wants and is likely more of her father's opinion.

I dated Tae Takemi in my game, and interestingly enough, their age gap does come up a bit in the link, I imagine the teacher one does as well. Then again, Japan is big on certain taboo romances for some reason. Being a delinquent protagonist is probably why there is a higher amount of older love interests in this game. Still doesn't explain why the P-Team is ignoring a gay option though. Especially weird when they had one in P2 and some of the design team are of the opinion that Yu and Yosuke are an unofficial couple in P4.

The PSTV plays Vita carts, I think, so you do have to buy the Vita game. Not sure if it supports digital copies. I know Formy and Carny played Golden on PSTV.

Persona 3 FES is an updated rerelease of Persona 3. It has an additional scenario that takes place after the game’s story but that’s pretty eh in my opinion, but it has a ton of QOL improvements over the original. I still like to recommend Portable as the ideal version for people since it’s the only one where you can play as a girl and control all your party (though a big chunk of the game is made to look more like a visual novel, but that’s a small price to pay for the improvements imo), but if you don’t have a PSP or Vita (not sure if PSTV plays PSP games but I doubt it), FES is the way to go and it’s the version available on the PS3 PSN.

Yep. It released originally on PS2 and was re-released on the PS3 as a PS2 classic game. FES is the one I eventually beat on my PS3 though I did own the original unupgraded version for a long time. Playing it on the PS2 is actually better in one very nice way though: there's a later stage in the dungeon tartarus that doesn't emulate quite right on PS3 so the walls flash like they're trying to give you a seizure. It's not quite as bad as that sounds but it is a bit annoying. You wouldn't have that problem on the PS2.

I'd just really love to play as a girl. x) Honestly, that's probably the only thing that could have been improved on PS5 for me--the ability to play as a girl/design my character. Also, regardless of the gender of the character, being able to romance all age-appropriate social links. Since the game tells you should "choose your words carefully", it's not like you can accidentally enter into a relationship with someone.
