We're just over a month out of SC6 now, so who's planning on picking it up? Anyone excited about anything in particular?

Was. Then they did the whole "fan favorite character locked by paywall " thing. Just because games like Tekken and Ryu from Street Fight are doing it, just doesn't mean that you should as well. It's an icky practice. I don't even like Tira!

Yeah, truth be told I might have been interested before they stuck her behind that paywall. I haven't even played a Soul Calibur game with any degree of dedication since 2 so I don't even ultimately use her or care that much about using her. But I do draw the line at supporting any fighting game where they start chopping up the roster and selling it to you piecemeal on top of the cost of the game itself. There's no way that road leads to anything good for the customer.

You know, it's really a surprise that they're doing that if Tekken is. They're made by the same company. And I don't really care either way for Tira, so she's not too high a priority. My Dad calls her Tiramisu.

Yes, they've done it with Tekken. I was hoping they wouldn't, but with the season 2 update they've released two legacy characters at 5 bucks each, with 3 more blank slots for characters that have yet to be announced. I wasn't too happy about it, but I did buy them.

I'm probably going to sit out Soul Caliber 6 unless it looks amazing because I also haven't really been into since 2 (I did play 3 a fair amount), and I'm not sure if I want to take the the time to get good at it again. Plus, now that I know they're going to charge me for legacy characters ahead of time, I'll probably just avoid the whole game.

I'll wait for the reviews before picking it up. I used to love the series but IV and V really put me off it.

They're hitting the right notes for me with the single player content, char creation etc., but I'm holding out to see how much actual substance it has. If it ends up being light on the single player side again and just "yet another online fighter" I'll give it a hard pass.

Pretty much where I'm at as well. I'll likely get it but I am not supporting the monetization schemes. I'm not sure how much i buy into the idea that Tira was just too late to add to the base game. If she's the only one they do it with I may forgive them after a while and buy her, but if they start releasing Rock, and Li Long, and stuff as DLC I'll just quit

It's especially sad they openly admitted years ago that it only took this long because the team had an internal feud about whether or not to sexualize Ivy and by how much (more). Compelling maturity over there that artists were stonewalling the game because they wanted bigger boobs when the director was tired of their crap

That is kind of sad, I hadn't heard that sort of pettiness was going on. You know, I think it would be even more of a shock to everyone if they actually gave her an outfit that covered everything. Might be a nice change of pace.

I didn’t play the first five.

I think it would be an insult to them if I joined the party at the sixth instalment.

Nah, everyone's got to start the series somewhere. And 5 is kind of being ignored. It was bad, and everyone knew it. 6 is pretty much overwriting it.

Not gonna lie though, if they did a remaster of I-III I would drop bank on it in a heartbeat, throw in Soul Blade as well and my wallet is ready to be emptied.

Her second outfit in SC II did that. At least I think it was 2.

I forgot about that one. The only covering one that I remember is the gray one from 3, I think?

Yeah she's had some "Castlevania" looking outfits over the years. And I certainly can't say I disapprove. It doesn't look like "Ivy", but it's definitely more appropriate, especially given her station is a wealthy aristocrat

I liked the Vth one. I didn't mind the new characters and it was a good OC maker.

Natsu over Taki anyday. I've always hated Taki's bizzare tittys poke out outfit.

The problem with the 5th is that it changed too much, and everyone thought that the new main character was annoying. Also, it didn't feel like it had the replay value of the others. Once you got through the story, that was kind of it. There weren't the individual lines of the past games to keep you entertained.

I remember I bought SC2 on a whim because I loved Tekken so much and I was blown away. I played it to death. Then for no apparent reason I didn't buy another after that. I'll definitely buy this if the reviews are good. Yoshimitsu hype.

Has anyone else picked it up yet? So far, it's pretty decent. I haven't really tried the network modes yet, too much unavoidable lag, but this game seems much more story-driven than previous entries. Two story modes that actually interact with each other, and the timeline layout is actually pretty neat for figuring out when everything is happen. Also, Create a Soul. If you haven't yet, /rSoulCaliburCreations is pretty entertaining.

Did that adventure mode from Soul Blade and Soul Calibur 2 come back? I had so much fun with that.

Not really though the story mode has challenges in the same spirit but not nearly as good. And character stories are garbage. Pity anyone who plays Xianghua's story. My girlfriend was livid

From what I could gather about the Tira situation she originally might not have been in the game if not for fan demand:

“About Tira, having her in SoulCalibur VI needed some pretty complicated adjustments, so much so that she nearly didn’t make the cut. After we had announced SoulCalibur VI, a lot of fans asked for Tira, so I went to see the development team and asked them to put her in the game, so that’s why she isn’t in the main roster and is DLC.“

So at least based on what they've said, she was made in addition to the base game instead of simply being taken out of the base game.

You can split hairs on whether or not you think there should have been a DLC price on something that was ready by launch, but at least on their part it doesn't appear to be a result of malicious double dipping.

I think it's interesting that they said that they had to had to make complicated adjustments for her. I haven't seen any of her moveset that's any worse the Voldo's, and he was a standard character. I wonder if there's an engine limitation they ran up against, or something similar.

Haven't played through Xianghua's story yet, either. That was on the docket for this weekend. She's never been one of my favourite characters, though. With that being said, Seong Mi-na's story made me a bit mad at first, then reluctantly hopeful that they were playing to ideologies of that time in history, and not just their personal fantasies.

Also they are pushing the grind. Unfortunately. There's supposedly no new outfit material to unlock. No modes to unlock. Everything is open from the beginning except there's like twenty items that are locked and cost 500 - 800 points to unlock. You get between 50 - 150 points beating arcade mode. No halfsies for partial credit and girlfriend says it's a locked at three matches so you can't knock it down to one to speed through. Though even if you could, it would probably dock your points. You earn gold in the created character story and you can convert that to points to buy things, but it's 5,000 gold for 100 points. So what they can't hide is the fact that they want you to buy the points online so you can buy outfit material. And also stats online suggest they are missing around 250 character customization items from previous games. Big surprise

You know, it actually sounds really bad when you put it that way, lol. But to be honest, what is a fighting game that's not a grind? It's literally just fighting either the computer or the ai over and over until you get tired of the game. Yeah, the missing clothes is really kind of lame. It's really crappy to hear that they don't have plans to bring them in. Hopefully if enough people complain, they'll get brought it. It seems to have worked for Tira, at any rate. But, I at least have no intention on buying online currency. I'd rather just grind it out, because I guess that's just always been my mentality on fighting games. Someone's probably going to have some snarky comment about that, but honestly, grinding out stuff with my dad over the years are some of my favorite memories with him, it's how we spent time together.

Don't get me wrong. Unlocking the hundreds of clothes modes fighting styles etc in Soul Calibur 3 was some of my best memories as well. But that wasn't obviously designed to hold you back and try to contact you into spending real money online. You'd unlock one to five things all the time. You could easily make enough in points to buy something in just one fight where here you have to go through eight fights of at least three rounds five times. So... 120'ish fights to buy a shirt. Where previously i could unlock it in one fight if i set up the parameters correctly. And at worse you could set matches to one and put on huge handicap so you could spend an afternoon easily grinding something out if you so choose.

But! I still love this game. Making characters is still a dream. The engine feels more smooth and responsive than previous. I feel more at home with my favorite characters than i have in a long time. It's a fantastic step in the right direction. I just grow leery of skeezy tactics or at least the potential of it

Most importantly you can remake The Legend of Dragoon characters and that's all they needed to sell me on this game.

I've been trying to make Kan-e-senna, but that hair is something challenging, lol. Also have an awesome joke character that's all shades of pink and named Yandere, and uses Raphael's moveset. Because I'm pretty sure he wins that title this time around.

I finished Libra of Souls last night apart from a couple of side things. Sunk about 15 hours into it, so if Soul Chronicle provides even 1/3 of that I'll be happy with the single player content in a Calibur game for the first time in over a decade.

I'm a bit sad at how restrictive the character creator is. Also sad at the lack of stages.

I'm also a bit meh toward the new characters, Azwel kinda falls into the whacky villain niche that the franchise has always had one of and I can kinda put up with him, but Groh just feels like a character made purely by Bandai to appeal to the anime edgelord audience.

Reversal Edges are nice but gimmicky. Critical Edges are... ok. Lethal hits, Guard Gauge etc. the game does a terrible job of tutoring the player through.

Kilik and Maxi are still nightmares in the hands of button-mashers.

Honestly, I've enjoyed the game. But considering Bandai Namco threatened that this might be the last SC game if it doesn't perform well, it does feel like they cut a lot of corners with it. Everything feels good, but nothing feels great.

Chibi Youkai

I think you'll probably enjoy soul chronicle. It's also heavily story based. And yeah, Azwel is the whacky crazy villain trope personified. They went way too far over the top with him. But, I'll be honest and say that I jumped on the Groh bandwagon, although part of that is that I could actually figure out his move set pretty decently. For Libra of Souls I pretty much bounced between his and Raphael's weapon styles.

Hopefully they add more stuff to the character creator. It's been the game's most popular feature by far, so it would be a shame if they didn't add more to it.

I don't think they've patched it yet, so for now Voldo gets free (meterless, all day long, all you want) critical arts and soul charges from his back turned stance.

Back turn, crouch dash, QCF or QCB A+B+K, and boom. He can even combo into supers from back turned launches thanks to it. It's pretty gross.
