Your first favorite.

So think of your favorite game of all time. Now think about what game was your favorite before that one? Did you have multiple favorite games or have you always stuck to one? What was the game you loved the most before your current all time favorite game?

I think my first real 'favorite' was Final Fantasy X. Before that I considered FFVII my favorite but it was never really 'my favorite' as much as it was finding good what my brother found good. Not that the game wasn't fun back then, but replaying FFX and finding that yeah, this is my favorite game, has a lot more individual value to it y'know?

Not really sure what my first favorite game was. Probably Legend of Zelda, but Mario 3, Megaman 2, and, more obscurely, probably Guardian Legend are early contenders. The first game I'm certain I thought of as my favorite game was Final Fantasy IV (then known to me as FFII). From the opening sequence of that game it marked a quantum leap in my enjoyment of games as entertainment.

My first favorite, at least as far back as I can remember, was probably Donkey Kong Country. Sonic 2 and Super Mario World were up there too, but I think Donkey Kong just edged them out.

If I was playing games before we got a SNES, my favorite would have been Mario 3, but I’m pretty sure we were in the 16bit era when I was first playing stuff. I honestly played most everything we owned pretty evenly between the SNES, NES, Turbografx, Sega Genesis, and Game Gear. I feel like I played some on our Atari 7800, but that console hasn’t worked for as long as I can remember.

The first one that lasted a long time was probably Chuck Yeager Air Combat. Before that it's hard to say.

My first favorite was probably A Link to the Past. I don't think I was very good at it. I think more times than not I would start a new game every time I turned it on and work my way through the first dungeon, until you make your way through the back end of the Sanctuary. At that point the princess was satisfactorily rescued and I didn't have to face the daunting rest of the game.

My first favorite in the "memory card era" that firmly planted my roots as a hardcore fan of JRPGs was Breath of Fire 3.

Not counting my very first game (Boulder Dash), which was technically my first favorite because there wasn't any competition :p

Anyway the first ones that lasted a while was a toss-up between Legend of Zelda and Mega Man 2. I spent a lot of time on those two games on my NES. I can't really tell which one of the two was my favorite, because this was at the tender age of 4 and my memory from that time is extremely vague.

Since then there's pretty much a new favorite every couple of years.

I think I really loved this game that was called " Barbarian " that was on my Uncle's Atari ST .

Yeah, it pretty much was. You can to swing your sword around and behead your opponent, and a small elf guy would come in screen and kick your rival's head out. I also loved Mortal Kombat when I was little too.

I never liked Mortal Kombat. It came out after Street Fighter II and, by comparison to the fluid movements of SFII characters, everyone felt slow and clunky in Mortal Kombat. Seemed like it was resting its laurels on gruesome finishing moves without any solid gameplay. Also, if I remember correctly, which I might not because I was never compelled to play it much, the characters don't have much individuality outside of special moves. Compared again with SFII where many of the characters play completely differently regardless of whether you use special moves at all.

I haven't played MK II in years, but I've played Street Fighter II games a lot recently, MK games are nothing without the violent shock factor.

MK was pretty decent for a starter Fighting Game series, and it was also a bit more broken because of how BS juggling could get in that game. I enjoyed the first two entries a lot when it was a quirky bad Kung Fu flick, and then they cranked that shit to 11 after MKII and it stopped being funny. I've heard the series is a bit more respectable as a fighter nowadays.

OG Zelda then Final Fantasy VII. They're both still right up there for me.
