So one of my resolutions this year is to tackle my backlog some more. I've been doing better the last few years, but I still have a ways to go to conquering this behemoth I created. So my goal is to at least start one game a month this year and get some ways into it. This month I'm tackling Final Fantasy Legend II while also finishing up Tactics Ogre, Death Stranding, and 4 Heroes of Light since I'm close to the end of those three games. For the rest of the year though, I thought it would be interesting to get some recommendations from the rest of you based on the list I provide. So which of these games should I try to conquer in 2020?

I have more games, on a few different systems, but have some logistical issues concerning them. I'm also going to ignore my Steam account until I can figure out a better setup for my computer gaming. Suggest whatever from this list, and I don't plan on adding to it, so I'm not taking suggestions I'm afraid.

Damn it, no Falcom.

Still gonna recommend Odin Sphere (though admittedly the Leifthrasir remake is certainly the preferred version) because damn is it ever beautiful, and Little Big Planet cause some days you just need a lighthearted and fun semi-2D platformer in your life.

Games on that list I can wholeheartedly recommend:

Parasite Eve
Digital Devil Saga 2
Odin Sphere
Shadow Hearts
Tales of the Abyss
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
Golden Sun 2
Radiant Historia

(I would recommend Yakuza as well but the PS2 games are rough, the Kiwami remakes are definitely preferred :p )

I see plenty more good games in there of course, but those are the stand-outs to me.

Of the ones I've played that I also think you might enjoy the most:
Parasite Eve
Odin Sphere

Though I have to say that the PS2 version of Odin Sphere is rife with slowdown, but the PS2 classic version from the PSN runs quite smoothly.

Damn, still no Witcher.

Out of those, I recommend:
Digital Devil Saga 2
Dragon Quest XI
Pokemon Ruby
Golden Sun 2
Pokemon Pearl (if only because you need to move on to generation 5 :p)
Radiant Historia
Bravely Default
Soul Hackers

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Though, don't worry about my personal taste, I own all of these games cause I figured I would like them so don't let my preference for RPGs rule out other titles.

Pretty sure you’re preaching to the choir, because it looks like all the external recommendations people made have been RPGs ;)

Wolf Kanno

Well I'm ignoring the external titles cause as you can see, I have like twenty other games collecting dust that I haven't touched yet. :p

I don't need to be adding to this list, I'm trying to take out the games I've owned for awhile now.

Btw have you played Golden Sun the first? Because you can transfer your save data, which is preferable. It’s also best done with two GBAs and a link cable

I have, but I have no means to transfer the data, which was partially why I've been sitting on it. I decided to finally just cut my losses at this point, especially since GS2 and 3 were loaned to my by my GF who is a huge fan of the franchise.

Well I played without transferring data the first time around and had a perfectly swell time, so don’t worry about it

There are some games in my backlog I'll surely never get to including some that I have little to no interest in actually getting back to. I would certainly like to finish DQXI though. I'm currently in the post-game, which is really more like a third act to the point that I can't really consider the game completed without finishing it. I got pwned by a boss rush and haven't returned to the game since, but there's plenty other stuff I could do besides just grinding (and I wasn't actually that far off from winning the battle I died on anyway). I'd also like to get back to Tales of Berseria. Those two top my backlog, but I have to be in the mood. Or maybe I should get back to FFXV, but... I don't really like it that much, so probably not.

A lot of games on your backlog are also on my backlogn (like every game on your list that I've played is one I haven't finished), so I'm not sure what I could recommend. I would probably skip Yakuza on your backlog and just go to Kiwami though (that's the only one on your list that I've finished if Kiwami counts).

Its the original PS2 one. I got years ago for like $5 on a discount sale with a bunch of other games on this list.

Fair enough, though you can often get Kiwami for like $10 these days. I've never played the original, so I have no real comparison, but I just figured it probably has stiffer controls and things like that which might make it a more onerous experience to play the original over Kiwami. I don't know how far you've gotten in it already though.

I haven't started it yet, but I'm pretty lax with clunky controls.

So far it's looking like Parasite Eve, DDS2, Odin Sphere, and Yakuza will be the titles I'm going to check out first from this list. I'm still trying to clear out my current games, but it will be nice to pull out the PS2 again. :D

Goodness gracious. That is more games than I have played in thirty years.

That is an advantage I guess of being a reader over being a gamer. You can tackle a list of books like that relatively quickly in some cases but a list like that of games might take someone a decade or more to finish.

Honestly, if I dedicated all of my free time to it and simply worked towards getting the ending and not side content, I could probably tackle this entire list this year. Issue is that I have other interest to explore which is why my track record is not as good as when I was younger.

Even then, I'd like to make a serious dent in this group at least for the year. Kind of want to justify buying all of these games.

Okay, so Death Stranding and Tactics Ogre have finally been conquered. Going to hit up 4 Heroes of Light and finish FF Legends 2 then I can get this party started. There is still time to make recommendations.

If you aren't finished with that entire list by the time Last of Us 2 comes out and playing it the very second it is released than Ellie is going to look at you like this.

I'll recommend Okage, even though I was probably like 12 when I played it last and have no idea how well it would hold up today. But I do remember it as a genuinely funny game that reminded me of a Terry Pratchett novel or something. Another vote for DQXI as well.

I'm trying to complete Outer Wilds (Not Outer Worlds). It's a fun little game that's rekindled my love for video games. It's so original.
