To what degree do creatures, objects, or aliens need to resemble human physiology for most people to find them "beautiful" in the sense of "social attractiveness"?

I don't usually find animals appealing even when they are anthropomorphized. I may find them likeable socially, friendable, and sometimes can contemplate a longer-term relationship with some characters like, say, Judy Hopps from Zootopia. But I don't usually see them in a "physical intimacy" sort of way... initially.

More often than not, I stumble upon some fanart depicting said characters in a different light expressing themselves in a way you don't usually see. To be blunt, most anthropomorphized animals (and objects) are family-friendly animations which do not express an overtly amorous or provocative nature (i.e. stretching, bending, walking, or touching in a seductive manner).

It's usually after exposure to this new depiction that I begin to find them attractive. Not all. I still have a type.

These fan-alterations also change how I see characters that are meant to be human such as Betty Boop or Marge Simpson. Sometimes these moments actually occur within the context of the source material. For example, on Futurama, I didn't initially find the Decopoidian Edna attractive until she started trying to makeout with Fry.

But I'm forced to wonder... what specifically am I attracted to?

I don't like the concept of Furries. The idea that you can somehow cosplay/role-play as an anthro is strictly ridiculous. The fan-depictions usually transfer physical human attributes that are more commonly desirable. But obviously some attributes remain strictly animal: the nose, the ears, the feet and legs, a tail, sometimes even the mouth retains a bestial shape.

However, there have been people who have gone to great lengths cosmetically, surgically, to obtain an appearance that is more animalistic and yet they don't usually look attractive in the same way these cartoon depictions potentially can.

So wherein lies the magic? The balance between neutered innocent representative of other-worldly imagination and the ultimately malformed abomination resultant of interfering in nature should be a more or less alien existence which somehow retains a powerful attractive quality to human senses.

I saw an Instagram story with a rabbit about to give head to a wolf and I said nope.

I'm good.

If it makes you feel better, she doesn’t end up giving him head!

Good question, I am definitely not someone who is into antromorphic animal/human hybrids. I never saw the appeal.
I guess for some people it is enough to see somewhat human proportions and they can be attracted ? That said, it is much more normal to find animated characteres nice, because they share attributes of real people. Take the FFVII:Remake cast for example. So many ppl swooning :D

No but like it’s an honest to God amazing show about society and the human condition and it just has so many layers to it and the characters are amazing and just

It’s a sold anime that shouldn’t be denounced as “just furry stuff” is what I’m saying

I've almost watched that show. But I'm so busy finishing up other series.

Some other examples of fanart changing my perspective: Isabelle from Animal Crossing, Smurfette, and Gadget from Chip and Dale.

To be honest, I've always been into Maid Marian from the original Robin Hood animation, no fanart necessary to push the line.

Not for me. I couldn’t entertain the idea of any kind of relationship with an anthropomorphic animal. I mean, I’ve occasionally touched myself thinking about Nannie from Count Duckula but who hasn’t?

Eh, I don't mind it and don't consider it any weirder than other kinks out there.

This post is literally THE BEST post of the past 3 years on EOFF and it almost went un-noticed.

QFT man I'm the same way, not a furry fan.

Shegoth or whatever though from Mortal Kombat III with the three arms, though, hoo boi.

I've long since chosen not to be bothered by Mileena's (although I would not let her "service" me no matter how much she'd beg), and I also have approval for D'Vorra and Sheeva. Sayin'

Beastars was a solid anime, and I appreciate them trying to have some depth to the characters and themes, but I think people are giving it a lot more clout than it deserves. Just my opinion.

I'm not saying it's bad, I don't think it is. It's good. It's just that the way it was talked up, I was expecting it to be even better. Maybe that's on me.

As to the original question, I know there's a whole generation slightly younger than me that has weird feelings about anthropomorphic people thanks to Space Jam and Lola Bunny giving them funny tingles in their pants.

I can't think of a character like that for me. I think noticing an attractive cartoon character for me probably started with like April O'Neil from TMNT. Maybe something earlier like Lady Jay or Scarlett from GI Joe, but I was probably a little young.

I'm starting to gather, based off the characters he's mentioned, that Mercen-X has a thing for fictional women that would most likely kill and devour him long before there was any chance for anything else.

There's probably a lot to unpack there, but I'm not a psychologist. I hope he finds a nice lady mantis to make him happy one time before eating his skull like an apple. Godspeed.

I don't know why, after a year or so of lurking, this is the thread I feel I should respond to. But I think people have a very narrow view of anthropomorphic entertainment, and immediately label it all furry stuff. Even fans of it call everything anthropomorphic furry. And I can't really disagree, but I feel like that's the same as calling anime "cartoons". I'm not at all a furry or into furry stuff in general, but I do have a nostalgic affinity to Gadget and Princess Sally. But they aren't nearly human enough for me to say as an adult I would be attracted to them if they were introduced now. But there's a wide world of anthropomorphic entertainment that shouldn't be ignored just because "animals". Barely any of it gets sexual at all

The Secret of NIMH
Redwall
Mouse Guard
Zootopia
Ghost of a Tail
Blacksad

All pretty good, mature and thought provoking stories about anthropomorphic animals

And then you have things like Watership Down, which is just straight up animals with human personalities, and they legitimately go insane, and die and stuff. Very mature, not sexual, not furry stuff, and I love when entertainment goes there

I love mature non-sexual anime as well

Mature and thought provoking puppet movies like The Dark Crystal are pretty good as well

Now that I think about it, it's kinda funny how video games so quickly went from being just kids stuff to legitimate drama and entertainment for adults, when cartoons, animals, and puppets always have to wear a stigma badge even still

Edit: I do plan on checking out Beastars, because the trailer snippets looks like good character drama, not because it has sexy animals or anything

I'm not at all a furry or into furry stuff in general, but I do have a nostalgic affinity to Gadget and Princess Sally.

I've always rolled my eyes at the fact that Dale wears only a Hawaiian shirt, Chip only wears a leather jacket, Monterey Jack doesn't wear pants, but Gadget needs a full body suit.

There's a history of half dressed male anthropomorphic creatures and female anthropomorphic creatures being completely/or more fully dressed. We're even uptight about how naked our fictional animals ladies can be in media. We simultaneously sexualize and sanitize even fictional women. Culture is weird.

Onesies make me think of the sad halloween store mascot outfits furries wear for their orgies. I do not have nearly the exaggerated imagine enough to think of that stuff as sexy. I like playboy bunnies and Japanese catgirls, but those gigantic stuffed animals freak me out. My anthros need to be appropriately proportionately human for me to s/o to them.

To clarify my statements, it is not my intent to physically upset anyone. My format is more/less ribbed for your humor. But as per any thread, if what I say upsets you, you don't need to be here. Bunch of narrow-minded sycophants.
