I love both these games. The only one of them I think is typically overrated is FFVI, but it is the better of these in all three categories, with one caveat. I think FFIV is one of the best replay value games I've ever played. Don't get me wrong, it has absolutely nothing to do with offering a variety of options on how to play or anything like that. It's just such a joy to play that I've replayed it more than any other game. I think the big difference with 6 is that it's a longer game and easier to get stuck in a rut on some places where I just stop playing.

But on plot, characters, and side content as a whole? Yeah, FFVI has a huge lead on this.

Oof, this is another tough one.

On plot, I think I'll say FFIV. The plot of FFVI is just a little too sprawling and disconnected. I still love it, but FFIV has the edge here.

Characters, it's probably FFIV as well, though it's much closer. Both games have a stellar cast of party members. I love Kain, Cecil, Rydia, Terra, Celes, and Setzer pretty much equally. But I'm not a huge fan of Kefka. I think Golbez puts FFIV over the top in the characters department.

I'd probably give side content to FFVI, though I don't love the side content in either game.

Overall, I think it's FFIV for me, but only just barely.

FFVI wins each category easily for me. FFIV is great, but really is surpassed by VI.
