I would have thrown Chrono Cross on here since it did debut in Japan this year, but I figured that was cheating. Honorable mentions got to Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike, Legend of Dragoon, and Final Fantasy Anthology.

I can't pick Final Fantasy Anthology since they made all those games worse than their previous releases.

5. Lunar Silver Star Story Complete? Maybe? I never finished this. It was 99 in the US though. And my other options would be like Legend of Legaia, which was ok.

Wow. What a year. This year saw the release of two of my top 3 games of all time. Which only serves to highlight my point that top 5 lists for a single year are a bit much. How many games from any given year do you play? 10? Maybe 15? If you're really pushing it 20? Top 5 lists seem to get pretty watered down when you're choosing say the top 50% or even top 25% of games you played. Might as well be "games you liked from this year." Even though my list starts with two of my favorite games of all time, by the time I reach the bottom I'm struggling to choose between a game I didn't finish and a game that's highly flawed and really just ok. What am I leaving off the list? Well, Wild Arms 2, which is a game I actually hated. And that's with liberal switching between NA and JP release dates! I mean, technically it's still a top 5, but a top 5 out of 10 can hardly be seen as a great distinction.

Totally forgot Suikoden II released in 99 in NA and strangely the Wikipedia page for games released that year didn't mention it. Sorry FFVIII, I really tried to keep you on this list. :(
