Platformer - Yoshi's Island
Puzzle - I don't play a lot of pure puzzle games, so I'll think on it
RPG - FFVII
Action: Kind of depends on how we distinguish this from Adventure. Let's just go with Secret of Mana here so I don't say the same thing as for Adventure.
Fighting: I don't know. I'm a bit partial to Street Fighter II, but I'm not hugely into fighters.
MMO: Don't play these.
FPS: Ditto.
Rhythm: I don't play a lot of these. Sayonara Wild Hearts is kind of one and it's pretty good.
Adventure: We talking like Monkey Island or like Zelda? If Zelda counts, then Horizon Zero Dawn probably counts too, and I like that better than Zelda. If it's more Monkey Island type, well I really like Tales of Monkey Island.
Racing: Super Mario Kart, probably.
Mobile: No.
Survival Horror: Another one I don't play much. Maybe Silent Hill.
4X - I literally don't even know what this is. Never heard of it.
Tactical/Strategy - FFT
Sandbox - Uhhh....drawing a blank here. I'm not really a GTA fan though.
Visual Novel - Definitely Zero Escape. Not sure if 999 or Virtue's Last Reward.
Stealth - MGS3

That's a lot of thinking to do, but let's see..
Platformer - Celeste
Puzzle - Tetris, nothing against other puzzle games as there are some amazing ones, but there's no beating this classic
RPG - Trails of Cold Steel 4
Action - A rather broad genre, this :p I'd say Metroid Prime (which i consider an action-adventure game, rather than FPS)
Fighting - Blazblue (More specifically, probably Chrono Phantasma Extend)
MMO - Final Fantasy XIV
FPS - Unreal Tournament (1999)
Rhythm - Elite Beat Agents
Adventure - As with action, very broad. For the sake of making things simple for myself, I'm going to just interpret this one as point & click adventure and say Grim Fandango (which ironically is not point and click but whatever, just roll with it :D)
Racing - Gran Turismo 3
Sports - Considering I haven't played sports games in ages..I'll say WWE Smackdown for PS2, can't remember which Smackdown game though.
Mobile - Genshin Impact
Survival Horror - Resident Evil 2 Remake
4X - Civilization V, but really only by technicality because it's the only 4X game I've played.
Tactical/Strategy - Utawarerumono (either Mask of Deception or Mask of Truth)
Sandbox - Terraria probably? Only other real contender would be Minecraft, but I'd say I probably enjoyed Terraria more.
Visual Novel - Ever17: The Out of Infinity
Stealth - Deus Ex
I Took the Red Pill
03-31-2021, 05:12 PM
Platformer - Hollow Knight
Puzzle - Tetris
RPG - Chrono Cross
Action - Sekiro
Fighting - Smash Ultimate
MMO - Guild Wars
FPS - Battlefield: Bad Company 2 for multiplayer, DOOM 2016 for singleplayer
Rhythm - Elite Beat Agents
Adventure - Twilight Princess
Racing - Gran Turismo 4
Sports - Rocket League if it counts
Mobile - Hanging with Friends back in the day, I don't play mobile games now
Survival Horror - Resident Evil 4
4X - Civilization IV
Tactical/Strategy - XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Sandbox - Miner Dig Deep
Visual Novel - Haven't really played any, I guess Persona 4 would be the closest
Stealth - Metal Gear Solid 3

I'm only going to include genres that have a game in my top 50 or so overall games. If you can't place even that high as a genre to me I won't bother.
Puzzle - The Talos Principle
RPG - Gothic 2
Action - Dark Souls
Rhythm - DDR
Adventure - The Secret of Monkey Island
4X - Civilization
Tactical/Strategy - FFT
Sandbox - Yakuza 0
Stealth - Deus Ex
Karifean
03-31-2021, 05:55 PM
Platformer - Crash Bandicoot 2
Puzzle - not sure...
RPG - Final Fantasy X
Action - Touhou 7: Perfect Cherry Blossom
Fighting - Golden Fantasia
MMO
FPS - Call of Duty 4
Rhythm
Adventure - Ys VIII (would've put it as RPG and Action too)
Racing - Gran Turismo 3
Sports
Mobile
Survival Horror
4X - Civilization 4
Tactical/Strategy - 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim
Sandbox - Warcraft III World Editor
Visual Novel - Umineko no Naku Koro ni
Stealth - Metal Gear Solid 3
Del Murder
03-31-2021, 08:01 PM
Platformer - Super Mario Bros. 3, mostly for the time it came out and how much that influenced me, the SMW games are also right up there
Puzzle - Tetris, really can't do better than the classic
RPG - Final Fantasy VI
Action - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, I consider this in the "Action" category which is a super broad category!
Fighting - Super Smash Bros. Melee, despite never owning a GC, I felt this was the best one
MMO - Final Fantasy XI
FPS - Goldeneye 007, what a defining game!
Rhythm - Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call
Adventure - Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward, I'm considering the old school definition of the point and click "Adventure" category :)
Racing - Mario Kart 64
Sports - Super Punch Out!!
Mobile - Pokemon Go
Survival Horror - N/A, don't really play these
4X - Age of Empires 2, probably the only one I've played
Tactical/Strategy - Final Fantasy Tactics
Sandbox - Pirates! Gold, I'm just going to call this the Simulation category
Visual Novel - OK I just saw this so I guess ZE:VLR goes here, though I'm not sure what "Adventure" is?
Stealth - Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, curious category since a lot of action games include stealth
EDIT: How funny, about half of us considered "Adventure" as the old point and click variety (but then what is a Virtual Novel?) and half considered it "Action/Adventure" like Zelda. :p
Also you need a Metroidvania category, WK. :p 2 of my top 10 games are in that category (and defined it).

"Adventure" is not a real genre, that is why. A game in basically any other genre could or could not be an Adventure game. Stealth is the same way, and so is Action, and probably some others.

Adventure: Zelda: LttP
Racing: Gran Turismo 4
Sports: Virtua Tennis 2
Mobile: There are no good mobile games that aren't better on other platforms.
Survival Horror: Silent Hill 3
4X: Alpha Centauri
Tactical/Strategy: Brood War
Sandbox: Just Cause 2 is the only great sandbox game
Visual Novel: Phoenix Wright 2
Stealth: Deus Ex

Sandbox: Just Cause 2 is the only great sandbox gameI can't believe how wrong this is, there is Sleeping Dogs, Yakuza, Saints Row, and for those who like that sort of thing Minecraft and Terraria. I bet Dragon Quest Builders is pretty good, too, although I haven't personally played it

Oh yeah. I forgot about Phoenix Wright. The third Phoenix Wright game in particular is really good. Might have to change my vote. You know what? I can still do Zero Escape and put it under puzzle game. Why not?
Also, mentioning Yakuza under sandbox makes me think that's probably my choice for that category too. Prp ably Kiwami 2.

Yakuza and Saints Row are good yeah, but honestly no sandbox game does anything interesting with the sandbox with the exception of Just Cause. In every other game they're just a backdrop you exist in that serves no purpose beyond pretending to be a real city. Sure the quests/characters within can be interesting, but Just Cause 2 is a fun game to just smurf around in to a degree none of the others can even pretend to be except maybe Saints Row 4. Everything else? Meh. Sorry, but just running/driving around from one quest objective to the next isn't actually enjoyable and the lack of any attempt to actually structure the experience only drives that home even more so.
Like here's the thing: I had more fun fucking around in Just Cause 2 than any other sandbox game. And the story and missions in Just Cause 2 literally suck. I don't even remember them. They just got in the way of fucking around. Sure the story and characters and stuff in Yakuza are great, but did I actually enjoy the gameplay as much? Nope. Wasn't even close.

I left some of the categories vague just to see how people classify things.
Interesting... a multi-layered psych test. :p It's interesting that you want to see our classifications. I actually have a lot to say about some lol...but anyway, here's mine:
Platformer - Braid (not counting games where platforming is not the main focus, i.e. Metroidvanias, Tomb Raider series, etc)
Puzzle - Braid (uhh...not joking, it has to be counted here, too, right? If no repeats are allowed, and for something more "pure" puzzle-y, then any Puzzle Quest)
RPG - Brai-- jk jk. I have to go w/ Deus Ex I guess. It's "Immersive Sim" first, but at the time it came out, was categorized - and rightfully so - as an RPG. Or else, it'd be Fallout: New Vegas or Final Fantasy VIII.
Action - Nier: Automata or Hyper Light Drifter (sorry, I know, a tie is cheating)
Fighting - Guilty Gear Xrd REV2 or Mortal Kombat 9 (sorry, I know, a tie is cheating)
MMO - Warhammer: Age of Reckoning
FPS - BioShock Infinite
Rhythm - PaRappa the Rapper
Adventure - Gone Home
Racing - Test Drive 5
Sports - Rocket League or NFL Blitz or NBA Jam
Mobile - Fire Emblem Heroes
Survival Horror - Silent Hill 2
4X - n/a? Total War series isn't 4x technically, right? I see there's debate...
Tactical/Strategy - Fire Emblem Fates (tactical) and Ninjatown (strategy)
Sandbox - The Sims
Visual Novel - Coffee Talk
Stealth - Metal Gear Solid 2 or Mark of the Ninja (MGS2 for overall game in stealth category, but MotN for actual stealth gameplay)

Platformer - Super Mario 64 (one of the best games of all time imo)
Puzzle - Portal
RPG - Dragon Age: Origins
Action - Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
Fighting - Super Smash Bros. Melee (don't like the genre much, but I had some good times playing this with my friends back in the day)
MMO - RuneScape
FPS - BioShock Infinite
Rhythm - Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory
Adventure - Gone Home
Racing - Jak X: Combat Racing (not a huge fan of racing games, either, but at least Jak X has some great character-driven storytelling)
Sports - Backyard Sports: Baseball 2007 (literally the only sports game I have ever owned)
Mobile - Nier Reincarnation (only just started, but it's already the most impressive game I've played on mobile, by far)
Survival Horror - The Last of Us: Left Behind
4X - Ugh. Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, by virtue of it being the only 4X game I've ever played. But I could not possibly hate the genre more.
Tactical/Strategy - Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds
Sandbox - Elite Dangerous
Visual Novel - Analogue: A Hate Story
Stealth - Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time

This is a perfect thread to test out a new keyboard setup
Platformer - One of my least enjoyed genres, even though it's one of the oldest and most standard. Probably Freedom Planet. It's a Sonic OC fangame that got fleshed out into it's own thing. And they did a surprisingly good job. It took everything I loved about Sonic 2 and 3 and added an amusingly compelling high quality Saturday morning cartoon story with decent voice acting. Very Archie Comics/SatAM type Sonic with the Freedom Fighters and stuff. Love it
Puzzle - Probably Tetris. Though half of my love is just from one of the main theme songs. There's a lot of puzzle games I like, but none are ubiquitous as Tetris. And I can't find a good worthwile version of Sudoku to point and go "Yup, that's the one" otherwise I would because I love me some Sudoku. But it's just a bunch of garbage apps with ads and crap
RPG - Probably Xenogears. There's a lot of contenders, for sure. But I think Xenogears successfully distilled what I want in an RPG into one lovable disasterous mess
Action - Just gonna have to say Aria of Sorrow. Lots of good contenders, but really there aren't many other games I just can't put down once I've started. Especially after multiple playthroughs
Fighting - Soul Calibur 3. Easily. Even with all the jank. The character creation was on a whole other level, and I adore Chronicles of the Sword. And the game itself is just fun with so many secrets and unlockables. I would still pay full price for a modern port
MMO - Uh, I don't play these. I imagine if I did then Star Wars: The Old Republic would probably win. If Conan Exiles counts then I choose that, but I don't even play it on the MMO servers lol Fantastic game for online co-op with friends and loved ones though
FPS - Another genre that I really don't appreciate at its heart, but I can probably say Doom 64, or at least one of the earlier iterations of Doom. But 64 was my favorite of the old-school varieties. Haven't really been able to enjoy the newer iterations, but they look neat
Rhythm - Uh... Rock Band? I have fond memories of late night jam sessions when I actually had a social life. I've heard legend that Sekiro is a Rhythm game, but I've had trouble getting into that game. Possibly for that very reason
Adventure - I don't even know what to say on this one. Gaming publications and platforms use it as just a catch-all genre. But I'm trying to think of actual games that have no enemies, or very limited enemies that could just be adventure. I think I'm going to choose A Plague Tale: Innocence. It does technically have enemies, though you can also stealth through 90% of it. The gameplay loop is very similar to things like Detroit: Become Human, Heavy Rain, etc. Though it's much better written, and vastly superior pacing to most of those games (though I do love Detroit). Watching my girlfriend play it was like watching a Game of Thrones style mini-series. One disaster after another had me on the edge of my seat and itching for more. It's such a good game for a taking a backseat. It could easily be played with a loved one or in a group, and everyone will be enjoying themselves for the adventure even if they don't have the controller in hand. Cannot wait for the sequel
Racing - Either Flatout 2, or a Burnout game, maybe 3 or Revenge. Can't remember which I loved the most. But they have very similar energy, and I enjoy the extra content more than the races. Although the Burnout games are definitely superior in the actual racing department. So I'll just say Burnout 3 because I don't own Revenge. But I'm pretty sure I rented it back in the day and I have a feeling it's superior, but I can't be certain
Sports - I really have no idea how to answer this. I honestly can't remember the last sports, or quasi-sports game I actually played. If I chose anything it would probably be a golf game, and probably a mini-golf game, but I can't think of any. That group feels like something I'd enjoy more than the other options though
Mobile - Really can't answer this one either, unless we're talking portable mobile, but I feel like that's probably cheating, because portable games like Vita, (3)DS, etc. have all the genres fully fleshed out and represented so they could potentially be an answer to any question so far. I feel like I'd probably enjoy Fantasian. But I don't own any apple products to play it on. As far as mobile games I've actually played, I'd probably have to choose Angry Birds, because it is fun and addictive. But I'm not happy about having to use that as an answer. That was like ... 10 years ago?
Survival Horror - Alien Isolation. No question. The only game, or even entertainment experience as a whole, in modern memory to make me feel uncomfortable traversing the house in the dark. As an adult, that is an extremely rare experience, for me especially. It's been a while, but I'm glad to have felt that again a few years ago. Made me feel like a scared child and I loved it
4X - I do not play these games lol I don't see the appeal at all. This and RTS games. I have trouble getting invested if I'm a country or a god. I can't even think of an example of "I might enjoy that game". Nothing about this genre appeals to me
Tactical/Strategy - there's a lot of strategy role playing games I could use as a cheat answer. The line kind of blurs if you split hairs between Wasteland and XCOM. But I think it's generally understood that Wasteland is an RPG and XCOM is a strategy game. XCOM and XCOM 2 were almost too stressful to actually enjoy. But something about having XCOM 2 with all the DLC made it finally click and I was actually able to stem the tide without pulling my hair out. Hard to think of another good strategy game I enjoy that isn't heavily overlapping into RPG territory. Though there are options these days with Project Phoenix and Phantom Doctrine and such, but I haven't taken the dive yet
Sandbox - Uh like GTA sandbox? If so, Saints Row 2 for sure. If it's like Minecraft type sandbox then I dunno. I can't stand aimless games like that, but I'd have to choose maybe Vintage Story or Portal Knights who took the formula and expanded on it
Visual Novel - 999 or Steins;Gate. I have trouble deciding which is my favorite as they are both compelling, but they are also the only visual novels that kept my interest until the end. I feel like Virtue's Last Reward and Zero Time Delimma kind of went off the rails, so as a series I'm not sure I'd choose that one. But also I've yet to play the Steins;Gate sequel, so it's hard to say. I don't beat a lot of visual novels and need to expand my horizons. Only other one I've played to completion was Ace Attorney and that was a little too quirky for me. So I guess Steins;Gate, since it hasn't been ruined for me yet. But I need to play other series, or complete that one lol
Stealth - I don't play a lot of these games, and I'm frequently disappointed by the ones I do play. Dishonored has a huge overlap into the Immersive Sim area and for some reason those types of games don't jive with me. I'd almost have to default to Metal Gear Solid, but it's been so long I don't even know if I'd enjoy the original anymore. I almost want to say Ghost of Tsushima, but that's an open world action game with an optional stealth playstyle. But it's really well done. I haven't played any Tenchu games, but it seems very Tenchu. And I very frequently stealthed entire encampments just to see if I could and it was super satisfying. And as far as stealth experiences that I can remember and enjoyed, it's definitely that
Old wireless keyboard from the closet feels just fine. Felt good to rant about fond memories. Thank you
