Does anyone want to play TTRPGs with me?

I want to run Mythic Bastionland and World of Dungeons and possibly Stonetop if we can wrangle up some long haulers.

Sessions will be held over Zoom or some shit using Miro whiteboard or some shit.

Looking for some fun and earnest roleplaying goodness with some good good folk, and this has always been the home of the goodest and folkiest.

I've only ever played D&D, with the exception of board-game TTRPGs I played 20+ years ago and a one-shot of Call of Cthulhu.

So, obviously, I'm in. In two years I might have even learned about those games!

I really want to try this with my kids but I haven’t looked into how to get started. Any thoughts on a newbie guide?

I think it depend on how "all-in" you want to go. For starting simple, there are some great board games that edge into TTRPG territory and allow for variation - but they are very focused on the exploration and battle, not so much on the RP mechanics. For that stuff, I grew up on Hero's Quest which I didn't even think about being a gateway into TTRPGs but honestly it really was. It still has a Dungeon Master and players. My sister and I would play it with my friends and everyone loved it.

If you want to dive into TTRPGs with a group of inexperienced people rather blindly, I'd say your best bet is to find a copy of the D&D Player's Handbook (and perhaps the Dungeon Master's Handbook) and read through it. I actually found it really interesting, it's not nearly as boring or gruelling as one might think to read through!

The ideal scenario is to find a friend who is prepared to DM and have them run a game with you, though. It's so much easier to learn when someone can walk you through it all, and I've found my friends to be amazing and patient DMs. Never be afraid to ask questions! I spent my first five or so games constantly asking stuff. Our session progress was very slow back then, but that's expected. These days we're a lot more experienced... so we still make very little progress because we're all too busy debating what to do with the chicken we found in a witch's mill.
