making VCDs from .avi files

I have easy cd creator 5 platinum, which says it has a vcd writer on it.....but the files have to be mpeg. The ones I need to make VCDs of are all .avi. Does anybody have any converters, or any knowledge on this sort of thing that they're willing to share?

The only way I could think is to open it up in a program like Adobe Publisher(?) and save the file as an mpeg, but you probably don't have one of those. *shrug*

This program (http://www.c-point.com/animator.htm) converts avi files to mpg files.

And yes, Help is the place for this.

EDIT: You might also try just changing the file extension without actually changing anything. They still play in most players, so it might trick it into working. The advantage of the program above is that it cuts the file size down a lot, in most conversions.

Unfortunately, changing the file extension won't work, because AVI is completely the wrong data format to burn onto a working VCD anyway, you actually have to convert the darned thing :)

I think you have to check the sound is a specific format as well, and the framerate and dimensions of the video are correct too, I can't remember off hand exactly what they have to be :p

spuuky, that program takes hours to convert something, and has no sound.

But oh well, I found another way....

Taking a couple of hours to convert video is normal, if the video is a fairly high resolution you need a pretty powerful machine if you want to convert something like a 1 hr video in 30 minutes. Audio compression will make it take longer, though by not as much as the video encoding contributes to the time.

Yes, but that's a much different thing from encoding a 20 minute vid in two and a half hours with no sound.

What sort of computer you using? If it's something old like a 200 MHz machine, I wouldn't be surprised at that speed. Also, it's best to make sure nothing else is running so the encoder can have as much processor time as possible.

actually it's 868 mhz, and I couldn't have any other programs running, or the encoder would crash. I'd say, the program was crap.

Umm... FlashMPEG works fine with AVI. :p I have it and always used it for encoding AVI/VOB to MPG. :p

I have used TMPGEnc for a long time now (full featured and free) and I would highly recommend it. It encodes most types of mpeg1 and mpeg2 video formats available. It even has templates for VCDs and SVCDs.

I have a 1 GHz machine, and it can encode around 15 frames per second. Your machine is pretty close in speed, so you shouldn't have too much trouble.
