It not only cost big bucks to buy ikon board / vBulletin, but it cost even biggers bucks to buy the webhost with cgi / pearl / what-ever-programming-language-they-use-here. Although I'm not sure how much some of the other boards may cost, Some may have a free version of there board that could suit your needs.

I'm pretty sure it's MySQL. And yeah, you're right.

Hehe, close. It's PHP, but the database language is MySQL.

I'd recommend Woltlab Burning Board (http://www.woltlab.info/en/news.php). Version 1.1.1 is free, and version 2 is available from $25. 1.1.1 is pretty good in itself, and there are a huge number of hacks and mods for it.

I would recommend phpBB. Its totally free and fully featured. You need a webhost with PHP and some form of SQL server (MySQL, PostgreSQL, MS SQL, Access)

Check it out:
http://www.phpbb.com

I am currently running a personal forum with phpBB and its great!

Every thing seems to cost money, except linux. Why aren't there any good open source message boards?

Indeed phpBB is great! Tons of hacks you can add, customizations galore and as was mentioned before, it's totally free!

http://free-php.cjb.net/ has many free servers that support php4 and MySQL. Although Lycos US does not support php4 and MySQL, Lycos UK does and Lycos UK has built in phpMyAdmin console, although it kind of sucks, so it's better to install it yourself.:D
