View Full Version : Because name changes are so farking confusing...

It might be a good idea to add a "formerly known as" field to the profile, editable only by admins. I've seen some members I'm SURE aren't new from their custom rank, but I've no clue who they are. If we had a way to track names someone used to possess, it'd be a heck of a lot easier in that regard :p

So feel free to add the field, if you like :D

Yamaneko

I actually approve of this. Seems like a good idea.:)

Some people register and don't post for months. That's why they have titles. Like that NPC guy and Akumaou812.

The Man
02-24-2003, 01:16 AM
Of course, but still, I'm sure a lot of these people have been around for ages and I just don't know who they are because they changed their names. (I almost put "I" in there, probably because I've been using the admin control panel on two different vBulletins for a total of about 40 hours this week).

Anyway. "I used to be" identifier. Would be nice, kthx.

Del Murder

I like it. That way I can change my name to Del Bond again and people would remember who I was.

Spatvark
02-24-2003, 01:35 AM
Yeah, but how many people actually check other peoples profiles? I certainly don't do it all that often... However, if this did come into place, I could see it being a more regular thing for lots of members if they see a name they don't recognise...

hmm...

Why editable only by admins? Let people fill it in themselves, that way they can enter only the names that they care to remember :p

Raistlin
02-24-2003, 01:24 PM
'Cause then we'd put in stupid stuff for no apparent reason. Or a staff member like an admin and have everyone confused.

In short: *arf*, why not. It'd be fun. :P

Burtsplurt
02-24-2003, 01:50 PM
Yeah... I've been wondering if a lot of the not-so-newbies had different names way back when.

Please don't make it so that Aaron can enter every single name change he has had. Database space problems and such...

Citizen Bleys

EDIT: n/m, it's done.

Linus

Good job, Bleys. There's a "Formerly" field in the profiles but we can't edit it in "Edit Profile" or "Edit Options."

:)

Spatvark
02-24-2003, 08:25 PM
And y'know... it'd look better underneath the current name, not between Y!M and MSN screennames =P

The Man

Ditto Linus and Purgatory. *perfectionist*

Seriously, tho', it's annoying to have that field empty so none of us can put our old names in it.

Yamaneko
02-24-2003, 10:16 PM
I'm sure it requires hacking, but is it possible to allow the db to input the name whenever an admin changes it?

It would get too confusing if it allowed people to change it manually because there'd be a lot of jerks out there trying to confuse people.

EDIT: Aaron: It's nice that your going to back to your roots.:D *points to avi*

Linus
02-24-2003, 10:20 PM
Yams, that would probably crash the board for weeks. You know that.

Aaron, he's had that av for like a month now, slowy.

I'm not sure what you're referring to here, but I agree wholeheartedly with the rest of your post. It certainly wouldn't make the boards crash, unless I'm misinterpreting what I'm SUPPOSED to get out of that.

Ok, someone wants a name change (i.e. Yamaneko), they ask an admin, let's say Bleys (for the sake of sanity). Bleys changes it to Tooth Fairy. Can it be done so that when I become Tooth Fairy, the Formerly field will say "Yamaneko" without me or an admin inputing it manually. Y'know, the MB would do it.

I don't get Linus' post either.

EoFF doesn't have Tau on its staff, so I'll just say no in order to make what would be a frustratingly long and boring story short. Hell, not even Tau's name-change scripts wound up working particularly well, since I didn't get my old name included in my profile when I changed to Rand al'Thor. But eh, whatyagonnado.

Let's pick it apart word for word.

Aaron = Identifier. This means I'm speaking to Aaron.
he's = Contraction for "he has." He meaning Yamaneko.
had = Verb indicating past tense.
that = Article for "av."
av = Short for "avatar."
for = Not a number.
like = Adverb, in reference to a number or amount of time, such as "about" or "approximately."
a = Article for "month."
month = A period of days, usually 30 or 31 days, sometimes 28, and rarely 29 days.
now = The current date and time.
slowy = An insult. It means you're slow.

Yamaneko
02-24-2003, 11:33 PM
I don't think that's what you meant.:(

Linus
02-24-2003, 11:34 PM
O_o

That's exactly what I meant. That you've had your Link avatar back for quite some time and Aaron is slow because he just noticed it.

Yamaneko
02-24-2003, 11:37 PM
Aaron posted first, then me, then you. How could he have been commenting on my avatar?

Haha. Linus probably thought you were a mod.

The Man

A lot of people seem to think that, actually.

Linus
02-25-2003, 01:39 AM
Bleys' audio intro got me confused. He said you were a mod of something. I don't know where, and I see a lot of your posts here, so I just deduced.

The Man
02-25-2003, 01:41 AM
I was once a mod of Magestar, even though I've never posted in it. At a later point, Bleys made a The Man forum, or something along those lines, of which, again, I was a moderator. In neither case did I find out what happened until it had happened already.

Del Murder

An easier solution would've been to forbid people from changing their names.

Please, dont forbid name-changing, I have been thinking about changing my lame Screename for a long time.

Anyway, I do think it should be higher in the profile, and maybe visible somewhere under your avatar (not in your profile)

It was meant to be that way, so that the admin doing the name change could change that field as well.

That prevents somebody registering tomorrow and putting "RSL, Sean, Dr Unne" in his "formerly" field. Putting it in the admins' control keeps it accurate and cuts down on unbearably lame "jokes" and all-out hoaxes.

The Man
03-11-2003, 05:46 PM
You could have explained that a lot sooner. In my case I'd like to have "Aaron, Citizen Bleys, Kilgore Tr</>out, and a billion variants of The Man" put into my Formerly Known As field, since it's the truth.

Citizen Bleys
03-11-2003, 06:10 PM
I only became aware that the question was asked yesterday, or I would have explained it sooner.

As I recall, it was part of the suggestin that the admins be the ones to change it.
