Good question. I had actually always pronounced it REE-dee-uh (accent on the first syllable).

I think it's pronounced "RID-DEE-AH." Like the name "Lydia." When I was little, I used to pronounce it "REE-DAH," then later on, I pronounced it, "RYE-DAH" then "RYE-DEE-AH."
I was so silly when I was little.:rolleyes2

Likely Rydia was a mistranslation of Lydia.

Exactly the same in Japanese, since they have one sound that's somewhere halfway between R and L and that's it. Translate Englsih to Japanese and back to English and you don't have good odds of getting the same word back out. Assuming the Japanese borrowed the word Lydia and the translators borrowed it back.

RID-EE-AH for me too. I always pronounced it that way, because my cousin is good at getting name pronunciations right.

I've attached a screen shot of the default name that they give her in the japanese version. Translating that into "romanicized" characters it would be "ri-di-a" or "ree-dee-ah" with the soft "r", almost an "l", as it is pronounced in japanese. so it could be Ridia or Lidia, depending upon how you wanted to translate it.

Rydia= Rid-ee-uh

Yep, that's how i say it.. No ah, like the doctor. just uh.. Rid-ee-uh spoken like a true american. And i doubt the names are pronounced anywhere the same in japanese as they are in English. It could be pronounced like Fuki-kara. WHO KNOWS?! I still think its rid-ee-uh.

Just like you say Toe-May-Toe or Toe-Mah-Toe you can say

Ri-dee-ah or Ree-dee-ah

or

Li-dee-ah or Lee-dee-ah

Either way I think that this poor thread was anjoying a two month slumber until someone woke it up and it wants to go out to pasture.

I've seen it in plain english as 'Rydia' on that lego (I'm not looking for it right now, but it was in a thread) advertisement, so I guess I'll go with that.

Edit: Here it is.

http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=99196

They use the proper 'Cain', 'Gilbert', and 'Fusuya', so it's safe to assume it's legit.

But 'R' and 'L' are practically the same in Japanese anyway.
