I downloaded this popup stopper and now I get random popups for porno sites, without even visiting a porno site. I attribute it to this since I have not done anything different on my computer for the last few weeks.

Make them go away! They're not even good sites either, 19.95 a month or something like that.

Ack! Another one! Help!

Either a) you downloaded a crap program, I'd recommend this one instead (http://www.panicware.com/product_psfree.html), or b) you got a virus/trojan/something bad on your machine doing that, and you need to run/update your virus scanner :p

So far so good. What's a good virus scanner?

Good question, I don't know any good ones that are also free - I get mine licensed by the university since my machine is connected to their network :D

Norton and McAffee(sp?) are the two biggest virus scanners. They usually aren't too expensive up front(if not free) but where they get you is after the first free month or so you have to buy a subscription to keep your virus definitions current. If you just want to do a one time scan of your machine, a lot of times you can find virus scanners to download for free to use a couple of times, then they expect you to pay to keep your virus definitions current, but you can just tell them "No thanks, my computer's clean now.".

I use this one. It's free, small and simple.

Use Firebird Del. Stop supporting MS. :p

Fine then. I'll start coding everything in Frontpage and submit it to the main site.:D

That popup stopper is great, thanks. The virus scanner Yams mentioned didn't catch anything on my comp, so what other source could the ads be? They're gone because of the stopper, but I'd also like to get rid of the source as well.

I have a program called 'Ad Aware' which goes through your computer and deletes all the spyware you may have downloaded. I dont have the address for it, but I think it should be easy to find. Try cnet.com first. But if you use Kaaza, make sure you dont let it delete any files associated with it (it will ask you before it deletes them) or it'll stop working.

The ads are probably spy ware, if they arent from a virus. And you may wanna clear your cache, too.

I ran that thing and it didn't screw up Kazaa. It just deleted a bunch of crap from Comet Cursor.

Yeah it doesn't do that anymore.

I uninstalled the program and cleared a few cache folders and now they're gone (I turned off Pop Up Stopper to check and it's been like an hour). So DON'T get NoAds, that was the one I was running. cl's is so much nicer.

Thanks for everyone's help. Maybe you guys aren't as big a jerks as I thought.

Great, they're back. I blame Spiff. At least the Popup Stopper blocks them so I don't have to deal with it. Should be good enough.

How do you know they're back if they're being blocked? :p Or did you tell Pop-up Stopper to make an annoying noise every time it blocks something? :p

That is why the panicware one is annoying at first until you realise you can turn it off :p Ad-aware is good as it asks you what you want to delete often with a @randomsite so you can just delete the ones with the address you don't want.

I turned off popup stopper to see if they were gone and they weren't :(. I can't see them now since I turned it back on. Oh well, this will have to do then.

I've searched around to see if some people had your problem, but it doesn't seem to happen with that popup stopper.
However, I've found a site that reported a "homebrew" trojan for someone on 98, which did pretty much what happened to you. So it would be possible that such a thing exists but isn't on virus lists because it's not widely present.
So, in other words, you'll have to track down the bugger. Search all active processes (using windows' or a 3rd party) to see if something unusual is running, log the outbound traffic for something unusual (like connecting to a ftp server). Zonealarm for example should warn you when an app tries to connect to the net.

Ok! I got Zonealarm (thank you) and a program called 'rb32' asked for net access and when I granted it one of those popups immediately came on. So I deleted that program and <i>hopefully</i> that takes care of it. Thanks guys!

Shame ZoneAlarm itself is an evil program, especially when you try to remove it and it leaves bits and pieces of it all over the system - plus sometimes part of it seems to take your CPU over for no apparent reason after you've had it for some time, and uninstalling/reinstalling doesn't fix it due to such a crappy uninstaller :D Happenned to me before on Win98, though I've heard it's more common on WinXP. Not a nice program.

Wow, one from the early days!

Why did I make this in General Chat? Or did we merge GC and the Help Forum at some point?

I think they must have, a lot of the old threads in GC are people asking questions about tech help. It was very confusing!

This thread is actually a great example of how awesome EoFF was back in the day. A thread with an eye-catching title but a serious question, and one that had nothing to do with Final Fantasy. Not only did I get a lot of great help but there was plenty of jokes and amusement too. Thanks for the bump Xmas!

Wow, no one bothered to make a comment when we talked about Final Fantasy or anything else but when it comes to porn....:mymelbert:

Man, I miss the wild west nature of the early to mid Internet. Smartphones and apps have sanitized and destroyed the sense of adventure you could have back in the day.
