View Full Version : HTML code...

Y'know what'd be really handy on this site? A glossary or guide to the basic HTML code tags. I know next to nothing about programming, so I can't do any special formatting or punctuation, such as umlauts, circumflexes, subscript, superscript, or anything else. For example, every time I write 'Kishi's full name, I have to copy and paste.

A simple instruction manual would be really handy for those of us who are unfamiliar with the HTML tags.:)

I guess that would be easy enough for the simple HTML tags, but vB Code mostly suffices for that. It's the more complex commands that you seem to be looking for, and I guess that would require quite a bit of work (e.g. <A HREF="http://www.bbsinc.com/iso8859.html">this</A> page on ampersand-type commands).

Anything other than ampersand commands could be added to the vB Code by an admin. I think it's quite easy to add that sort of thing from what I remember.

As long as you remember the names of the accents, it's not a problem.

Personally, I use alt + numpad to do my accents; 'Kishi's û is alt+0251, é is alt+0233, etc., but that's a habit I formed from going to boards where HTML is disabled. Here, you can use ampersand + letter + accent type + semicolon.

&amp;eacute; gives you &eacute;, &amp;acirc; gives you &acirc;, &amp;ouml; gives &ouml;, and 'kishi's û is &amp;ucirc;.

Edit: Also try [ u^] without the space in it.
Testing: [u^]

That [u^ ] thing is mighty nifty, thanks Bleys.

The only alt things I know are é (0233), ß (0223) and ü (129). But it's generally pretty easy to find the other ones just by trial and error. =P

As for HTML, there are huge amounts of sites, but I do think it would be nifty to have something here with the HTML that you would be more likely to include in posts, such as <LI> and of course the more basic <s>, <b>, <font size=7> and so forth. I think I've managed to figure out everything I know just by looking at HTML done on other sites/posts etc, though I guess not everyone here can learn by casually clicking on 'edit/delete' for someone else's post >_>;;

Any other special characters that will be used here often enough to warrant their own replacement variable?

(I'd prefer to only add the ones that will be used a lot, since I have to add each one in three times)

[e'] = é would be nice.

Perhaps the € sign? :p

Although I can type that on my keyboard, as well as various other symbols like ÁÉÍÓÚáéíóú or ¦ instead of | - might be more I don't know of :p All with the use of the Alt-GR key, which I believe is missing from US Keyboard layouts :D

¦áéíóú

Dude! =D Thanks, clout.

...kinda weird how the | on my keyboard does a ¦ and vice versa, though.

heh, and there was me doing it by holding Ctrl+Alt and typing the buttons to do it. That works on ALL keyboards.

Citizen Bleys

Spat: can you be more specific? That sounds useful, but I can't make it work. Tried CTRL+ALT+e+^ and got nothing, for instance.

Spatvark
06-03-2003, 02:46 PM
Ctrl+Alt+a = á
Ctrl+ALt+Shift+a = Á
Ctrl+Alt+e = é
Ctrl+ALt+Shift+e = É
Ctrl+Alt+i = í
Ctrl+ALt+Shift+i = Í
Ctrl+Alt+o = ó
Ctrl+ALt+Shift+o = Ó
Ctrl+Alt+u = ú
Ctrl+ALt+Shift+u = Ú

I have no clue for other types of accents

Citizen Bleys

doesn't work for me, so there goes your 'all keyboards' theory.

(I've got an American keyboard)

Spatvark
06-03-2003, 05:06 PM
funny; I know loads of Americans who can do that too =P

They must be SPECIAL.

Y'no what would be neat? If Ryukishi was auto-filtered into Ryûkishi.

Might wanna make that Ryuukishi that auto-converts, to save RyuKishi getting suckered into it a few times. Or just make it case sensitive, I guess.

My American keyboard doesn't do it either, Mr. Spatface. It's a Logitech, by the way.

Citizen Bleys

I don't think I *can* make it case-sensitive, but I can easily filter the two-u version.

Whee! <3 <3 <3

You just made typing out stuff for the Ciddies so much more simple.

The only way I can get accents other then to copy/paste that I know of is to hold... crap, I forgot... but then you type the digits code on the number pad. I used to know a bunch when I was a kid but I've forgotten them all.

i learned most of the ascii codes for diacritical marks from kicking stupid hackers out of Jedi Knight games.

The key you're looking for is ALT. *points to my first post in this thread* :D

My computer has a character map for special characters under Programs>Accessories>System Tools.
Plus my keyboard has an 'Alt Gr' key which automatically makes the áéíóú keys.

The only time my character map gets used is when it automatically starts at 7:55pm everyday so I get reminded to remind Mandy to take the pill.

...Yeah, the last two threads I've started in 'Feedback' have both turned decidedly dodgy.

Back to the topic...
I think that a menu with a definitive and exhaustive list of HTML code tags would be pretty handy. Not just for non-standard punctuation, but for more elaborate formatting too.

Citizen Bleys

I have an exhaustive HTML reference. It's 400 pages long.

Big D
06-05-2003, 10:48 AM
Uh... OK... how about one that covers the basics - all the stuff that qualified people regularly use to make their posts interesting?

Or I could just try to find out for myself.

If you felt like learning the basics of HTML, <a href="http://www.htmlgoodies.com">HTML Goodies</a> is great.

Fixed the tag ~ <s>Purgatory</s> SPATVARK (dammit, gotta remember I changed my nick back XD)

Thanks Spat, didn't notice, myself. xD *looks down* No worries, Big D. :p

Big D

Ah! Brilliant!
Some day I'll dig through that site and extract the more useful tags.

Thanks, o.O!

Just ot be more specific thatn o.O, <a href="http://www.htmlgoodies.com/tutors/html_ref.html" target="_blank">THIS PAGE</a> covers pretty much every tag you ever know. If you need any more help than that, you can just PM me on here or get hold of me on a messenger; I'm pretty nifty at this stuff =P
