I think it's fun to make birthday threads for people with funny names that never post. The point isn't to wish happy birthday, but to laugh at a great screenname. That is less spammy than actual happy birthday threads, if you ask me.

Makes sense to moi.

I take it one of these such threads was closed? I say we leave these kinds of threads open under the condition that we get to close all legitimate birthday threads (except for mine, of course).

that would be so wonderful.

I say we ban them altogether. If you post a birthday thread, then both you and the birthday person get banned. One for being the cause and one for being the thread starter.

:D

I almost wish we could do that.

I'd be gone, too. No *way* I'd make it a year without somebody trying to make a fuss.

You think too much of yourself, Pants.

Get rid of the calendar and don't display birthdays on the main page. Problem solved.

I'm sorely tempted to do just that, you know.

Just so that people won't remember my birthday.

Actually, that's a pretty good idea, getting rid of the b-days in the calendar and the forum index, so the only way to know is by clicking on the person's profile.

Lets just get of everything that's not absolutly necessary.

(First person to say "Like you?" gets eaten.)

Like you?

Yeah, let's remove all colours and images please :p All pure plain text would be nice, so it renders without any problems at all in the Lynx browser :D We'd be doing 56k'ers benefits too for that :p

Keep the calendar, remove it from the main index.

Well, if we banned people that started birthday threads, I'd have been banned numerous times over already. I just do it because the people that post, in my opinion, deserve some recognition and know that people out there are thinkin' about them while they party hearty.

But if you're looking for an alternative to birthday threads, you might suggest to everyone that birthday wishes should be sent through PMs. Granted, some of you might get a lot already, but it'd probably take up less space and everyone would get just as much out of it, right?

The system works.

A thread wishing a happy birthday to an active member, just saying a few nice things, is quite a good idea in my opinion.

As long as they don't have misleading titles, and aren't allowed to overflow with spam, they can be pretty good. Kind of like a once-yearly chance to show a bit of appreciation for a fellow EoFFer.:)

threads which only consist of "happy birthday" posts over and over again really serve no purpose. Birthday threads are ok as long as people actually say something meaningful beyond the simple "happy birthday". give your birthday wishes a personal touch.

I'm sick of the misleading titles, yeah. From now on, if I find one of them, I'm changing the thread title to the basic "Happy Bithday [membername]", with [membername] being replaced with (shock horror) the member's name. Yay me.

Yeah, I'm sick of clicking on birthday threads because I'm led to believe that they're threads where people might actually talk about something. >:O

Del Murder

Well, I never post in a birthday thread without saying something extra about the person. And I never make a birthday thread without demading everyone say something besides 'happy birthday', but no one ever listens.

Threads with misleading names are getting pretty annoying, even though I've made one or two in the past. but, yw.

I think having birthday threads is nice. I dunno about you, but when I see a thread made just for my birthday, I feel all warm and tingly inside. Ya know? Even just posting 'Hope you have a nice day! Happy b-day!' is nice since the person took time out of their busy day (albeit just a few seconds) to wish you a nice birthday. It just makes me feel nice. Umm, yea. So I think b-day threads should stay.

Spatvark

I think that if people are going to make birthday threads, they should do so because they KNOW it's that person's birthday, not because it says so on the main page of the forums. Most birthday threads aren't made because people know, but becuase they can...

Strider

Well, in that case. . .hmm. I'd still have been warned/banned/whatever several times over. I just do it because, like others said, it's a sign of recognition to those people we commiserate with, regardless of whether we know them or not.
