View Full Version : Start up Programs
A while ago, a friend of mine told me a command that you can enter into the "Run..." to open up a program that allows you to select which programs you want and don't want to start up with windows.
I can't remember that command for the life of me, does anyone know what I'm talking about?

msconfig.exe
Ah, yeah that was it. But I guess it only works in Windows 98, seeing as my Windows 2000 machine here at work doesn't have that. :\

Does Windows 2000 have something called "Administrative Tools"?. Check under "Control Panel". If it's there, go into it and click "Services" and deselect all the services you don't want to start.
Okay, yes it does have that, and that worked. Thanks. :)
I also found this: http://www2.whidbey.com/djdenham/Msconfig.htm
So I guess I could get msconfig here if I was allowed to download progams. :p

Be careful what Services you disable, some are required for Windows to work properly / at all.
I was mainly wondering for when I get home, I have some dopey programs that start up with my computer (Quicktime, ScanPanel, Yahoo Messenger), and I wanted to get rid of the start up. I didn't get rid of anything here at work, because there are no start up programs. o_o

Most programs like that, you should disable through the program itself. Quicktime and Y!M at least should have an option in them somewhere like "Start when Windows starts" or something that you can disable. It's safer than messing with Services or hacking the registry which is probably what msconfig does.

Yeah, msconfig rewrites the boot.ini file. I've never had problems doing that though. And I've never been able to stop the Quicktime control center from starting at start-up without going and disabling it through msconfig.
