So uhh, sound on my computer has died completely. I use onboard sound, rather than a sound card (I'm too poor to afford one ;_; ) and it just won't play any sound. I've tried playing mp3's in Winamp and WMP, but in the first it won't even play them, and in the latter, all I get is the visualisations. I get no sound in my games either...

I have no clue why this's happened; any ideas?

EDIT: Sorry, just HAD to get rid of that damn smily...

I'll try to make the check-list exhaustive.

- Check speakers volume
- Check system volume, check if muted (that happened to me with my CD drive)
- Check power cable for your speakers
- Check cable to the sound card: plugged correctly?
- Check the speakers on another device
- Check with other speakers
- Check the windows device manager for any information:
* Sound card is detected?
* Sound card is marked as working normally?

This happened to me as well. I was cleaning up my computer, and something vital to the speakers must have gotten deleted.

I just saved everything I needed to a disk and redid my harddrive. It all worked out fine.

Sound cards are $20.

Indeed, I'm sure my sound card cost however much you'd spend in one night at the pub or one weeks worth of beer or whatever, so can't be a big loss at all, if it's that important to you xD

Anyway, do Raf's checkilist, and maybe also check in dxdiag (from Start, Run) since that'll tell you what audio devices are installed and detected too, and has a sound test thing in there too.
