hey, it has happened to me more than once when my characters have the sleep spell cast on them that some kind of gray dog thing appeares, casts some green spell on them, dissapeares and voila! the characters are wide awake.

so my question is: ...WTF? what is that thing? first i laughed at it but then it got me thinking about what it is and thinking bothers me...

Did you do some sort of attack before the "grey dog thing" appeared?

Ity usually just happens when your entire party is asleep. It like... bails you out. I dont remember anything else about it.

I've never even heard of the grey dog thing until just now.. Hmm.

*nods*

It happens during one of my games, when I tried to put all my characters into sleep as a small challenge to me. Damned dog...

This is just a shot in a VERY dark room but I think that if you have a certain esper equipped it'll automatically go into effect to wake you back up. The one that casts sleep on your enemies. Either that or your enemy(ies) cast sleep on your entire party after they've already put you all to sleep and thus reverse the desired effect. Still, I don't know. Big D, Kishi, Doc France... Somebody help!!!

It's not a dog, it's an ardvark if I'm not mistaken. It happens if your entire party is asleep, there are no other factors than that.

No, it's not your entire party. If, by chance, you're asleep and don't do anything to revive your member, eventually you'll hear a sound, see the dog and be awakened.

If it's an Esper, then it's Fenrir. I'll go play a game on the ROM to see if it works before you get any Espers.

And no, the Aardvark lookin thing bails single party members out of different trouble.

Edit: Here's a pic of the 'Aardvark', and I was wrong, he does individually bail the party out, but he gets them all in one shot. I know it isnt an Aardvark, I believe it's a real animal though. I'm still lookin for the dog...

This is in WOR by the way.

Oohh that. I've seen that before, yeah.

It's actually a tapir. According to Japanese mythology, tapirs eat your dreams. For example, the pokemon Hypno and Drowzy look like tapirs and have sleep attacks. Like Goku, it's one of those cultural references that the Japanese instantly recognize that others might miss. :greenie:

Tapir, I knew that I'd read that about them in mythology. I have no idea why I couldn't remember it at the time but yes, I do remember reading that... *blush*

What version of the game are you playing? I've played this game millions of hours on my snes and never ever have I seen that thing.

The tapir is also part of Mog's Love Sonata dance, in which is restores the party from all adverse status. Look (http://www.rpgclassics.com/shrines/snes/ff6/skill/dance.shtml).

I've played almost every version of the game and have seen it in every one. I'm 99.9% sure that it's in every version, I don't see why I wouldn't be... Try it sometime, disable all of the enemies and put all of your people to sleep, it WILL happen.

It's in every version of the game, as Gogo said. you just havent had the opportunity to see it. Your entire party has to be asleep for at least a little while.

just be patient.. it will come up sooner or later.

It's come up for me, before, when only one or two members of my party are asleep. This was on the old cart, though. I think it has something to do with the character staying asleep for a certain number of rounds, and that number is quite a few.

TheAbominatrix

Oh yeah? Hmm...

I dunno about the number of rounds thing though... I think it needs to have at least a set amount, but it can go over. I did it a few times on the ROM and the times varied.

guess it's the recovery rate from sleep? i guess that's what it is

That's odd. While I've seen it, it's always come up when my party was completely fine. Dumbass tapir...

Shinrin

i dunno maybe because your in the battle for a long time?

Azure Chrysanthemum

That could be it. I remember first seeing it when I was against the painting in the rich art collector's house in Jidoor the first time I played through the game. That fight had taken awhile.

maybe he heals the charaters some. to give you the advantage?

hey, now that you mention it, the first time i saw the little critter was when i was fighting the painting! maybe it has something to do with completing that side-quest...?

Shinrin

i dunno.. maybe maybe not

Wightraven

Hmmm... same here. Wonder if it IS a trend?

TheAbominatrix

I dunno. I think I've seen it in the WoB. I'll see if I can find it in the WoB and get a screen shot. It's probably just seen by everyone there because that's the first time I can think of when enemies are really pourin on the sleep spells. I dunno.
