In order to find out what kind of sound card you have, go into My Computer > Control Panel, then double-click on the "System" icon. Click on the "Device Manager" tab, and it'll be in there.

To find out if it's on-board or not, you can either pop open your PC case and look, or just check the back of your PC to see if the sound sockets are in the slots towards the bottom (where the PCI cards are), or up towards the top where all the other motherboard things are (mouse, keyboard, etc.)

the first thing that comes to my mind is opening the computer, and looking for a slot that looks like its mirrored to the others, and in another color.

or... you could check the bios

Sounds like AGP to me, the brown one :p

The others will be PCI. And if your PC is really old, you might have even longer slots right at the bottom/end of motherboard that are black - those would be ISA slots. :p
