Dark Aeons and Penance

Alright, I've heard of them but have not a clue about them, and so forth. So, my question who, what, were, and when?

These are extra hard bosses that are completely optional and only in the european version of the game. Im guessing by your post that you have the american version of the game? Hard luck, but i think us europeans deserve it.

Yes penance appears after you kill all the dark aeons :)
