I saw a thread like this in the FF7 forum, and I wanted to make on like it in here... so here goes:

If FF8 was going to the Big-screen who would you cast to play the characters?

Squall Jared Leto, maybe?
Rinoa I'm not sure, but Winona Ryder looks a little like Rinoa. Or maybe Matsu... Rinoa is actually based on her...
Quistis Sarah Michelle Gellar...
Zell Don't know, help!
Irvine Colin Farrell (with long and blond/red hair)
Selphie Natasha Gregson Wagner...
Seifer Jude Law.
Laguna Don't know, help!
Kiros Don't know, help!
Ward Don't know, help!
Edea Courteny Cox has the looks.
Cid Don't know, help!
Raijin Don't know, help!
Fujin Ling Bai (with silver hair)
Ellone Don't know, help!

If there is an actor/actress you don't know then just look him/her up on www.imdb.com OR you can go to www.google.com and search for their picture...

Personally, I think that if FF8 were made into an actual movie, it would be better with newer, unknown actors rather than a cast of established stars, wouldn't you? :p But just for laughs, here goes, look-alike pics and all:

Squall: A young Johnny Depp

It would have to have all Japanese actors.

Why? No one said that it would be a Japanese movie, and only a few characters in FF8 look even remotely Japanese.

Considering Square has pretty much bailed on the movie-making business, it could very easily sell the rights of the game's story to an American production company.

Mr. Graves

Well, yes, they could sell the storyline. But, it would probably come off just like the Mortal Kombat movies; special effects will probably be sub-par. Not saying that a movie adaptation would be terrible, just that for hollywood to be at the helm, It wouldn't be the best. I think most FF adaptations would be best as anime series, feel free to disagree though.

I think that cast is pretty bad, no offense. Ashley Judd is waaay to old to play a teenage girl. Seann Scott is too skinny for Zell, and someone tall and thin would be best for Irvine. But, I'm thinking it as the movie being as true to the game as possible, so...yeah. And the character facild designs look a bit japanese, hence the comment about the movie featuring all japanese actors. But like I said, a movie adaptation should strive to be as true to the source material as possible.

"But like I said, a movie adaptation should strive to be as true to the source material as possible."

No, that would make an AWFUL movie. It's called "adaption" for a reason.

None taken - in fact, I agree with you. As I mentioned in my earlier post, if a live-action movie was actually made of FF8 (or any FF for that matter), I think it would be most successful with a cast of mostly young, unknown actors rather than an established Hollywood-ized cast. The original Star Wars is a good example - no one in that film was cast for their box-office draw, and as a result audiences went to see the characters rather than the actors who played them.
That said, however, I believe the point of this thread was more for fun than for a serious casting call, so I named stars most people would recognize who look somewhat like the FF8 characters, so that someone might get a kick out of imagining them in that role, not because I'd necesscarily reccomend them for the part, although that pic of Brad Pitt actually does scream Irvine at me. ;) Also, I recommended that most of these stars should be the "younger" versions of themselves because they are too old now to play teens (Ashley Judd being one of them), but they were young enough at the start of their careers.

LOL at the Robin Williams suggestion.

When I first saw Cid I was like "Holy mother of god, that's Robin Williams!":p

lol! Robin Williams as Cid Kramer is just brilliant! He'd be good at it I reckon and there is a certain similarity between the two! Just think of him in Cid's headmaster clothes!

Actually it should be done like the Spirits within movie instead of it being a real life one...because if you think about it... you have the Gardens, the GF's, the monsters[dragons, and other weird stuff] and you have these really high tech Galbadia stuff...and you have Esthar and their barrier...your talking about like more than $100 million worth of lights, props, and the actors to play it...so if we made it like the animated one it would be cheaper and have a better see to it. What i think they should do for the movie biz on FF is to make different movies than sequels like the game...It would make it more interesting and make the people want more...but then make sequels to cover up for the loose ends like LOTR-or like Star Wars...so if ya think about it it would be a better idea...Just IM me on AIM---coronazure.................................the audience is watching...........................................................................:) :) :) :) :) ::) :) :) :) :) :) :) :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :whoa: :whoa: :whoa: :whoa: :whoa: :whoa: :whoa: :whoa: :whoa: :whoa: :whoa: :whoa: :whoa: :whoa: :whoa: :whoa: :whoa: :eep: :eep: :eep: :greenie: :greenie: :greenie: :greenie: :greenie: :greenie: :choc: :choc: :choc: :choc: : :choc:         :rolleyes2 :rolleyes2 :rolleyes2 :rolleyes2 :rolleyes2

I totally think that having the movie animated would be totally better, youguys have to admit that weither the were all japanese or all american, NOONE would be totally happy with who was cast. Hollywood always ruins stuff like that. I'm so excited, the movie would be totally cool, since this game is the best thing that ever happened to me. Well i better get back to reality since this wouldn't happen. I can still dream.........:mog: :mog:

If they ever actually made the movie, I wouldn't want it to be animated for a couple of reasons:
1. It's just not cost-effective. One of the reasons Spirits Within tanked was because it takes a lot of money to completely CG and motion-capture a film, much more than it would cost to shoot with conventional actors and use CG for only some special effects. There is no way enough FF fans would see the movie (especially considering how split the FF community tends to be on 8 anyway) to make up the difference, and that would mean it would be a one-time thing. I don't know about you, but I'd rather see the film succeed so that they would make others (6, 7, etc.).

2. An animated movie meant mostly for a teen+ audience based on a video game would be a much harder sell into the mainstream than one which was live-action. A movie with real people (even if they weren't established stars) would be more likely to bring in outsiders, because it pulls the film away from its roots a bit, which I don't think is necessarily a bad thing. You also wouldn't want to see the game on the big screen word for word would you? If I wrote the screenplay, Id' fix a lot of dialouge, give the secondary characters more to do, and make the Squall/Rinoa thing happen more gradually and realistically. You can't just cut and paste a game onto a movie screen - it would suck. Movies are a completely different medium than games, and need to passively hold their audiences.

3. No matter how good the animation was, in a few years it would seem stupid. Remember how amazing FF7 looked when it first came out? Now we describe it as "super-deformed." Live action movies have more staying power in this fashion - since the special effects are secondary, their outdatedness wrecks the movie less.

I'd like to see the player running around in circles to make a "character tornado" and walking back and forth in front of a ladder because they're having trouble grabbing onto it.

I really think that Kiefer Sutherland (younger of course) would make an IDEAL Seifer. I've been looking at some pictures (cause I happen to be a big fan) and I'm telling you, this guy IS Seifer. Looky here:

Keep in mind that after FF7 which had totally japanese, manga characters, FF8 had more 'western' characters. Aside from Selphie and Rinoa, most of the other characters didn't have many manga characteristics. Like Seifer for example. Or Quistis and Irvine.

I totally thought cid was Robin Williams the first time i saw him, too.

But I would much rather see VIII in CG rather than live action. But who really cares, since it won't happen anyway, unless one of you is a big-shot director in hollywood.

Wow. There's many interesting replys here...

... Well, now I'll give you more to discuss about. If the FF8 movie thing really came true, and the film was going to be live action and not CG (like Spirits within), who should in your opinion direct the movie? :)

Me. :p Seriously. If anything ever comes of my theater and playwriting skills, and my work ever becomes famous, I'll use my power, wealth, and influence to make it happen. Promise.
