Never heard it said like that

It's actually French for "Greeneye". Pronounce it as oy-verr (pronounce the 'verr' as you would when saying 'very') with a slight roll on the tongue.

Do NOT pronounce the T. :D

Thanks Spike. Now we all know the truth, so I can close down the polls.

Looks like I can't close them. I started the poll, so I thought I could. If any moderators see this, close it for me. No sense in voting now that we know the answer.

Did you set a poll-closing date?

Hmm, I noticed it was French myself- but was it written in katakana in the Japanese version? Or is it another bizarre name change like Jitan turning into Zidane.

And... any ideas on why it's called "Green Eyes"? The best I could do was a reference to the booze-loving vampire Zillah in Lost Souls which I HIGHLY doubt made it to Japan.

I'm not that great at French, but wouldn't 'Green Eyes' be Yeuxverts?

Jitan to Zidane actually isn't that bizarre. Since there is no "zih" sound in Japanese phonetics, "jih" would be the closest there is to it. So if you wrote something like "zebra," it would become "ju-e-bu-ra." :)

In Japanese it's written "U-E-RA-VA-RU-TO" (or close, I don't have the script with me right now), which is why I end up pronouncing it "WHEE-luh-vert."

That's why it's Greeneye and not Greeneyes. 'Yeux' is plural while 'oeil' is only singular. One of the many irregularities you'll find in any language.

EDIT: As for the place itself, I can understand (I suppose) about the 'eye', but why do you figure it's green?

This should spark some discussion without lingering off-topic.

I'm color-deficient, but wasn't the place itself green? And it had a telescope looking thing on top..... so... it does sorta look like a big, green eye toward the skies.

I don't remember at all. I thought since it had the name 'green' something had to be green about it, right? Perhaps you're right; I don't know.

Oeilvert is a fun and scary place. I will leave the name as another one of its scary secrets.

There was a thread about this a month or two back, and the responses were mostly based on Japanese pronunciation. Considering the context, i'd guess that's the right direction to take it, though i took my own stab at the word relative to German pronunciation rules. :D

All in all, i'm just glad that most of the FF series is text-driven. :thumb:
