I think this (http://www.ffcompendium.com/h/ff3half.shtml) is pretty interesting.

That would've been cool. Although we probably still wouldn't have had a U.S. release.

That game was going to be FFIV. We did have a U.S. release for FFIV.

Which was for the Super NES. The article said it was being made for the Famicom. But yeah, who knows.

I believe Final Fantasy IV did start out as a NES game, but when the SNES was announced they just continued it there. I think it was basically the same though. *shrugs*

Man, a Cook, a Juggler and a Carpenter...and all these years I was thinking that there could be nothing more laziest as a class than Bard :p.

I hear there's actually a Juggler class in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Funny, the way things work out.

Yes, there is. It's a job Moogles can attain.

O_o;; I find all that somehow very scary. The sprites of the characters in battle look like I's, and those old men look eerily like the ones that end up what became IV.

Save Grandpas and buying airships...whacky ideas that didn't make it through. I can see a save equalivent of Stilzkin, but buying airships and encountering others on the world map? It would've made the sky almost a town in itself and dealing with collisions might've been too complex.

Mmm, Tactics Advance. *goes to play*

If you look at screenshots from the NES Final Fantasy II & III, you'll notice that they just recycled sprites from the first game. XD

The page explicitly says that the in-battle screenshot in the lower right is from FFIII, not the proto-FFIV.

Call me a skeptic, but what are the chances that the magazine article isn't fake? Why hasn't anyone found out about this / drawn attention to it before now?

Spiffy.

But then again, there was supposed to be a Final Fantasy for the N64 before Square decided to pack their bags.

I wouldn't be inclined to think it's a fake. Lots of games have early screenshots posted in magazines, even from the very start of their development.

Indeed.

Does anyone have any idea why development of this game was cancelled?

My theory is that it was made as a seperate of ffseries maybe not even a ff.Though id sure wish it would have came out...maybe it was meant to be ff3j-2?

i've played them both and ff3 is different than ff6

ff3 you start in a cave with 4 onion knights

there is the job system

ff6 you start with terra and the story involves about summons

Yeah, we all know that. This discussion is about whether or not Square scrapped a Famcom game that would have been Final Fantasy IV, but because Final Fantasy IV was released on the Super Famcom, this would be a Final Fantasy 3.5 if it was released today.

I wish it was something that would have/will come out, I like the older Final Fantasies so adding another one to the collection would have been nice.

It's invariably a bad sign when a game changes platforms in mid-development (see Sonic Crackers/Knuckles Chaotix), so when Square realized it would be releasing FFIV on the SFC rather than the FC, it completely restarted on the framework. So I'd wager.

It's also interesting to note that according to this page (http://64.53.95.207/ujap/ff4/ff4.html) there is a prototype copy somewhere out there...

Is there any validity to that claim beyond some dude at an ip address saying so?

Well...there's also this board (http://donut.parodius.com/mo/messages/5026.html) that talks about something along the same lines. Of course, it could (and probably is) just a rumor. Tough I will always have my hopes...

Lost Levels (http://www.lostlevels.org/) has already explained that the whole article was a mock-up based on conjecture. No serious programming was ever devoted to placing FFIV on the FC; the decision to develop it for the SFC was made before coding even began; etc.

We-eel, how do we know that Square ain't lying?

...

Yes yes, I know it's far fetched...

Or perhaps it's part of another alien conspiracy?

They're everywhere!

No, that's just a figment of your imagination. <takes out neuralizer and uses it>
