Is he ever required to participate in a battle anywhere? I'm about a 4th of the way through the game so far, and I don't really like moogles, so if I know I'll never need him, I'll just let him drop to the bottom of my roster...

In some story battles i believe he may be required, not many. He's not bad if you turn him into a Moogle Knight!

Montblanc is required to use in some missions as well as having a specific mission which doesnt require marsche

My nu mou always surpassed Montblanc in black magic though.

I tend to prefer an Alchemist-Sage combo Nu Mou over black magic using ones. This being in my main clan were I have one of each race and a human (I mean general 6 I use).
