Attack while its tails up! If you do it's gonna counter-attack with it's laser!
In the beginning of ff7 did anyone else attack right when barret said "Attack while its tails up! and get counter-attacked. The text was a little strangly written here. I'm just curious.

He should say, "DON'T attack while its tail's up." That'd make far more sense, since you're not meant to attack when its freakin' tail is up....
this translator are sick.

Yeah, there's a lot of fluffy translation in FF7, particularly in Midgar for some reason :D
Sure, I attacked it. And got smeared with that laser.
I did the same thing. Quality translation. :D

Wasn't the translation fixed in the platinum or whatever the rerelease version was?

I was only 9 when i was up against that boss for the first time. I didn't know any english, except maybe yes and no, so yeah, I hit him while the tail was up... I think I died like ten times, and I didn't understand why... :D
It would not have made a difference if the translation was correct... :)

Yikes, has it been that long? It still feels like yesterday almost!
I have the platinum version (first one I had wasn't quite legal, Square deserved more than that rectification for such a good game.) The translation is still the same.

I knew better from FFVI and IV.
Too bad they're bastards and can't put a nifty little first boss thing like that other ones. >:O

I remember getting it around 4 years ago (late release in Australia) by accident. Didn't have a CLUE what turn based meant, and I could never get pass that boss.
Now I have the platinum version (my original got uber scratched!), don't know if it's been fixed though.

It's also the speed of the message. If it was quicker, you'd be like "Whoa, so maybe I SHOULDN'T attack when it's tails up"
Well, they say what dosen't kill you only makes you stronger ^_^ Except....it killed me. Several times in fact.

I was only nine the first time I played FF7, I didn't understand what counter-attack meant, I fell for it over and over again(untill I read the manual)

Not only is the direction it gives you wrong, but the sentence is grammatically incorrect as well. The game says, "Attack while it's tail's up," but "it's" (a contraction for "it is") should be "its" (the possessive form of "it"). Silly translators.
And yes, the translation screwed me up the first time I played the battle, too. I lost only once, though; I figured it out as soon as I realised the monster was counterattacking.
I actually didn't think FFVII had that bad of a translation, apart from the occasional grammatical errors and this one instance. They did get the actual rhythm of the spoken English language down pretty well in the dialogue. I'm all in all glad Square translated FFVII themselves rather than hiring outside translators; they probably wouldn't have captured the depth of the story nearly as well.

"Beacause you are a puppet,"This's spelled correctly in my PS version. Never realised other versions had it wrong...

FFIX, or instance, had nearly the same translation team, but most of the dialogue was far too "kiddy" for my liking.

I don't really have a problem with any of FFIX's translation; it's just not as intricate a game in terms of plot. I still like the FFVII translation more, though. And yes, that includes bits like the "Off course!/No, way!" pairing - the grammatical mistakes keep you on your toes. :D

No-one in FFIX talks or even laughs like a mature, brain-bearing individual. I know that quote is non-existent, but it's representative of the worst elements of FFIX's dialogue.
FFVII gave characters some distinct "voices", I think. Genuinely believeable personalities, not just cut from a particular mould or stereotype.

Didn't Barret say 'Attack while tails up" to emphasise the fact that Cloud knows more about the Shinra machines after being in SOLDIER? I might be wrong cos it's a while since I played it, but I'm pretty sure Cloud contradicts Barret when Barret comes up with the comment.

in the pc platinum version it goes like "attack while its tail is up and get counter atacked. you see? the sentece is perfectly fine (and i just realized that the person who opened the thread wrote the same). it doesn't sound like what a native english speaker would say but i think it is understandable.

I actualy Did a joke script of that scene once!
Cloud: Heads up here they come!
(Battle: Scopion Guard Things go well until The monster Lifts it's Tail!)
Cloud: Barret! Be careful! Attack when it's tails up....
Barret: RIGHT!
(Barret Blasts the Monster with Several attacks The Scorpion angrily Lets fire A pwerful Lazer on Barret and Cloud!)
Barret: OWWWW! Damn! Man! What the @%@$ was that?!
Cloud: You didn't let me finish!! I was gonna say "Attack when it's Tails up It's gonna counter with a Lazer!"
Barret: You foo Cloud!! Be more Clear on you'r warnings!
Cloud: Well maybe if YOU Hadn't interrupted me!!
(Cloud and Barret Fight Until they are on one HP The Scropion atacks them both GAME OVER!)
MORAL OF STORY: Be Clear!!

I always assumed it went like this.
Barret (Assuming he's correct): Attack while its tail's up!
Cloud (Being in soldier he would've had more knowledge): If you do it'll attack with it's laser! (Contradicting Barret)
It makes sense that way. I never got stuck on that first boss. With only 800 hp it was pretty easy.

i was only hit with the counter-attack once, this because they game was backlogged with my attacks, i already had cloud attacking before the tail went up. so i only got hit once, that was enough for me to go, hmm... don't attack when the screen pans back like that and the tail is up, you is uber screwed if you do.
usually, for me at least, if i get the crap kicked out of me more then twice, and with the same move after i do that exactly same thing to an enemy, i learn

It makes sense that way.It makes sense, but it's still a <lousy> and misleading way to give you battle strategy.
Also, Cloud was never in SOLDIER. Just felt like clarifying that and being a know-it-all :P

I have the PC version now, though I don't think it's the platinum version.
It isn't fixed in this one, but I've already spotted a number of other translation fixes/tweaks up to then :)
Cloud: "I'm not here for a lecture, let's just hurry"
Barrett: "That's it! You're coming with me from now on"
(sounded like Barrett was angry? I thought so)
this was changed to...
Cloud: "I'm not here for a lecture, let's just do it!"
Barrett: "Alright! You come with me from now on."
Opening the password-locked doors, if you spoke to the wrong person (Biggs when Jessie was at the door or vice versa) they just used to say "Let's go!"
Now you get some extra lines:
Jessie: "Biggs and I managed to get the codes for these doors"
and
Biggs: "Think how many of our people risked their lives, just for this code"
I wonder if there's a list of changes anywhere, either way it'll be interesting to go through and see some of them ;)

You guys honestly...
He said this, "Attack while it's tails up, it'll counter attack with it's laser."
Barret was saying it matter of factly in his gruff voice. If it would have been me saying it, it would of been, "Attack while it's tails up and it'll counter attack with it's laser."
But Barret has that tough guy matter of fact accent to him.
I had no trouble with it!

Slight flaw in that theory: It was Cloud saying it :)

i always attacked it while its tail was up and i manage to survive the battle (by sacrificing a few potions). but anyway, overall, by taking more damage and all, you learn your limit breaks faster! :)
i had a friend who was playing a new game once, and when the scorpion raised its tail, he had cloud attack and it countered with tail laser. Then he wanted to heal, so on barret's turn he pulled out a potion. he wanted to heal cloud, so he pressed Left and confirmed with O button. BUT, the cursor went to the scorpion and he used the damn potion on the scorpion instead of cloud! :P

actually Al Bhed^3, when it raises its tail, its defense doubles or something cuz then Braver only deals about 50-60 damage, so it can't possibly be dead right there.
oh, and...i play Magic, too.

It can raise its tail multiple times if you take a long while to kill it.

Back on topic, clearly one of the more daft translations. Some get it, some don't. Being about 15 when FF7 was released, I actually adopted some of the FF7 language/translation, which it turned out nobody else understood... so it was a bad influence O_o

Let's not forget the '....xeno....gias'.
Anyways, the first time I played FFVII was at a friend's house, and she told me not to attack while its tail was up...after a brief moment of confusion, I followed her advice. Didn't take too long to win after that.
Then again, that fight isn't too hard, so...
'Off course' made me laugh pretty hard when I noticed it. I suppose Cloud believes the announcer to have misnavigated his thoughts in suggesting he quit the battle arena.
Ah well, despite the occasional misspellings, FFVII was translated pretty well in my opinion. If you can read Japanese and have access to the Japanese version of the game, you'll find they're pretty similar. Though there's no way to translate Sephiroth switching from 'Omae' when in SOLDIER to 'Watashi' in the present....
Nimrook
02-18-2004, 01:17 AM
The battle arena's doubly screwed in fact, because not only is there "Off course", but the alternate option is "No, way!" ;)
And I put in my commands to attack with BOTH CHARACTERS after Clou said "attack while its tail's up!", and then it counterattacked twice. :p Luckily I'd healed just before and so didn't actually die in that battle at all.
Hmmmmm..... so that's how you'll fool them....
RyuuRaigeki
02-18-2004, 01:45 AM
"No, way"
There is an explanation! I believe Cloud felt the need to be macho to intimidate all the monsters and the girls watching him fight said monsters, so he thought that dropping off words so as to make his sentences undertandable would be the best way to do it.
You can blame it either on the lack of brains or surplus of spikes.
(Just kidding)

I had no trouble with it!
Thank you. That thing's easy. Before the fight put Cloud and Barret in the back row. Have Cloud use Bolt and Barret attack with his long range weapon. For some rediculous reason the Tail Laser counterattack is short range, so it only does about 35 damage each if you're in the back row. Just use Potions if you need to and unload on the mothaf***a!
