View Full Version : I want a freaking way to know who's male and who's female at a glance dammit!
Did you know Levia is a guy? Well, I didn't! I'm freaking tired of this genderbending BS everyone does behind my back, next thing I turn a corner, and BAM, Leeza is a guy or something! What do we want, pink names what we want!
Or maybe it's me. Who thought Roogle was a girl?

We can put your name in pink if that'll help.

An admin could just edit the gender field into the postbit, that'd work. It'd be convenient, too.

I usually know which sex people are.. or I just don't really care :) I didn't know if Roogle was a girl or guy, and I didn't really care earlier. I've never thought he was a girl before though.. He was just there :) Like other people at EoFF. I've known for quite some time that he is a guy though ;o
I chose not to vote ;o

Or those who lie about their genders, like me. ;) well, we have the sex field hacked into the postbit on FG and most people end up putting 'witty' comments like "now plz" or something in their instead of their actual gender. hell, I'm guilty of that :o
still, it'd be a bit convenient ;)

Then make the field so that it can contain only 1 letter. That way people wont be able to make jokes about it.

Unless your gender is 'E'.
Although I don't know if it's a joke.

We used to have a hack that did just that when Acmlm was doing all that kind of stuff. When we finally removed it after people complained about loadtimes, everyone noticed the sudden increase of speed in the place. So basically, giong with the "Don't knock it 'til you've tried it" strategy on this one, we tried it and now we can knock it.
*knocks it* Or something.
Yeah, it's not worth it. Use the profile page, Nait. It's not the hardest thing to do.

I know Levia's a guy 'cause he sent me his photos for the album and I looked at them and there was a guy in them and I was like "Oh."
I like the pink/blue names, but I think I agree with BoB. If people really push for it then I can be swayed, but for now I'm gonna go with no.

The way I see it, if you care that much about figuring out what gender a certain person is, just ask. There shouldn't be any need to change the board in some way when there's always the power of inquisition.

I just assume everybody here is male until it's proven to me otherwise. That way, when you have to say who your favourite female member here is, you wont be made to look the fool when you accidently say a male like Raistlin, BoB or ShlupQuack.

installing the sex field on the postbit requires no hacking whatsoever, just thought you'd like to know that
I thought Blanco Meow was a girl until recently.

Just adding to what I said earlier - it was also very, very easy for someone to have the wrong colour put on their name as a joke. So chances are you'd end up even more confused. ;P
PS. I never, ever knew for certain whether Belladonna Knight is a girl or a guy. I don't think I'll ever believe anyone completely no matter what they say. Grr.

I agree with BoB. There's no way that you're ever really going to be sure whether someone is male or female. I have an F in my gender field, I say that I'm a female and I've shown you pictures that are female...but, am I? You still can't really be sure, can you? That can all be a lie. Maybe Nait is the female. :)

Bella is a boy->girl tg I'm pretty sure.
the hack is to make colored names for boys and girls, and i think that is tacky. i knew levia is a guy anyway. whenever i see someone new i check their profile to see their sex, and if they don't list, I don't care.

I go by avatar/sig and sometimes the name and determine that way. Though, it's not always the most accurate, as I've made a few mistakes in the past. I thought Levia was a girl because I associated the name as feminine. Jayren (Rainecloud) uses the female avatar/sig themes quite alot, and he's male. =p
So, going by this method is not always the best. If I'm really unsure, I just check the profile.
Lazy bastard.

How about we just ban all the females. Not only would that eliminate any confusion here but they would also have extra time to be in the kitchen so everybody benefits.

It's called profiling. Something I didn't do with crono and I was positive he was a girl for about 6 months. I was PRETTY embarassed when someone corrected me and said "umm, alisson, that's a guy" xD

I thought we got rid of them because the board was wiped and they weren't put back up, along with the other hacks, 'cause the board was slow. Or something.

Ugly.
Loony BoB
12-07-2003, 10:22 AM
The board got really slow and we just dehacked the crap out of it and the speed increased noticably. No wiping involved, nothing to do with ugliness (well, that wasn't the reason, anyway - they were ugly ;)).

It would be a semi-easy hack to do, but why not just wait until vB3? It allows radio-button style controls for extra fields in profiles, so it would be possible to limit the choices to male and female (as opposed to people putting § in their gender field)...plus, I think the new templates are going to allow if logic, so it wouldn't be necessary to hack the source for the board (Although my vB hacks at ljforums have been source-based, since I already know how to do that ;))
The beta of vB3 that we're running at LJF seems very stable and complete, and now Gamma's out, so a Release Candidate is just around the corner.
But speaking of the upgrade...I don't think I passed EoFF's vBulletin customer info to anybody when I resigned--I'd better email Roogle approximately now *dies*
