View Full Version : Midgar Zolom.

I recently thought of something... which I quite doubt hasn't been thought before. What it all boils down to is... lacking translation. The thought:
Midgar Zolom = Midgårdsorm [å pronounced much like ô in french]
Comments? I don't know how the japanese FF7 spells it, but I have some knowledge of the Midgårdsorm ('the Midgårdsorm' is written properly in swedish as Midgårdsormen).
Midgårdsormen is a biiiiig snake, parented by Loke/Loki and Angerboda (giants). Curiosa: This snake wasn't the only child, see. It's siblings were Hel, the Fenriswolf and, incidentally, Narfe [Narshe?]. Midgårdsormen was so big it completely encircled Midgård, humanity's home in Yggdrasil, the world-ashtree, and it was thrown there by Oden/Odin (e and i was represented by the rune I). During Ragnarök, Tor and Midgårdsormen kills each other.
With this in mind, doesn't it make some sense that Midgar Zolom should be Midgårdsorm?

Makes sense to me. I've also heard that Nibelheim has something to do with Norse mythology as well...

Midgar is Midgard, the Midgar Zolom is the Midgard Sorm, Nibelheim is Niflheim, Gunge Lance is Gungnir, etc.

Nifelheim: The cold realm inhabited by the rimturses (icegiants).
DocFrance are right. (www.paranormal.se is TEH WIN!!1 IF you know swedish. :p)
Ouch, whoever translated Gunge Lance instead of Gugnir should be imprisoned!

Back to Norse Mythology again, eh?

I thought it was Jormungand who circled Midgard.

I don't think that's impossible, but Midgårdsormen was in the ocean. Maybe Jormungand is the ocean? I'm too soon out of bed to check for myself. :p

The serpent you speak of is Jormungand.

... I'll be damned. Now that I think of it, the name Midgård Serpent isn't consistent with the other names... But of course. Oh well, now that's hopefully cleared up. Jormungand = Midgard serpent.

Uhh duh!?! of course its refering to the snake of norse mythology! Havent u ever noticed the influence of mythology on FF games? I mean its pretty unavoidable. Im not saying i know all of them but check it out:
Odin-Lord of Valhalla
Shiva-Hindu god
Quezacotl-Aztec god
Cerberus-Gaurdian tot he gates of Hades
Ramuh-if u cant figure this one out theres no help for u
Eden-duh!
Diablos-another duh!
Siren-Evil Beautiful voiced women who lead sailors to their death in the Odessy.

I don't think Hinduism is nearly widely enough known to say that people who don't know it are hopeless.

Ramuh has nothing to do with Hinduism; the name is a mistranslation of Lahmu, who comes from the same Babylonian/Sumerian mythology (http://www.karenlyster.com/sitchina.html) as Tiamat, Gilgamesh, Enkidu, and Humbaba.

That's interesting...
... Just so you know: The word 'Midgårdsormen' isn't swedish but danish. :)

*Sulk* Well, it exists in swedish...
Enoki: Like you said, duh. But 'Midgar Zolom' is the ugliest mistranslation of a singe word ever, wouldn't you agree? It was horrid enough to throw me off course, anyway. :)
However, I'm a little grumpy that Square left Tor/Thor out of it (Tor is the 'modern' form; without runes). A dude running around with a hammer smiting giants all over the place, always hits, etc. He's enough to teach FF7's Odin a thing or two.
zacks_clone: I'm looking through the site now. I have a feeling I'll be there for a while... :D

hmm i have a question. I recently started playing FFVII again and after the Midgar Zolom piece u get this pretty view of a 'midgar zolom' artfully placed on a large wooden stick by your dear friend sephiroth. But i was thinking, isn't there only 1 midgar zolom ? i mean. it wouldnt be so special if there were more :) mayb stupid of me but hé. it slipped my mind :)

Yes, that's right: the English translators could not properly translate these English words into English.

Tetsuya: If you ever have to fight it you'll notice that
whenever you kill one another appears.
Silent Warrior: They really should put Thor in as a summon, but, the reason I think they didn't is that they already have their lightening summon and that's Ramuh.
I do think however that they should put Zodiac Signs in as summons I mean Choco/mog got a summon.

1.I think its great how they use mythology in their games. I find it makes them so much more interesting.
2.Shiva technically isn't a god btw its the six armed goddess sheeva (yeh its only spellings but wtf!)
3.the worst mistranslation ever is none of those. I was crippled with laughter when i heard 'all your base are belong to us'. :D
greatness.......*slap*
4. Seto sounds dodgily like some kind of mythological warrior of some description, could one of you guys check that up for me? pweeeeeeeeez!

...This is where I request that you PLEASE use something resembling decent English grammar and spelling. I'd understand if you two were non-native speakers [as it were] of the language, but if you two are native speakers, there is no excuse, other than a degree of laziness I, as a long-term lurker here at EoFF, find appalling, to not make yourselves look like intelligent young people with opinions worth reading.
[EDIT: Siva the Destroyer is indeed a god, and the Hindi deity Shiva is based on.]

You can hardly talk, I may point out that "...here at EoFF, find appalling, to not make..." makes no sense whatsoever. Wether you meant "...here at EoFF, find IT apalling, to not make..." we can only assume.

of laziness I, as a long-term lurker here at EoFF, find appalling, to not ...
The use of comma implies 'I (as a long-term blablabla) find appalling'. IT :p checks out by my standards. But that's a bit of a stray. (Though I've seen worse, I would also like to see a more proper english, like, EVERYWHERE. :evilking: )
one_winged_angel: ... Ok, yes, that's also a completely disgusting translation. What, does mistranslations for mere words count now?
I can tell you right away that Seto doesn't exist in norse mythology. *brief search* Nope, can't find Seto without more effort.

aww thats not fair.. He would have been a great god/warrior to rip off...
And as for the grammar, you can't use an adjective without some kind of noun to be describing, and in that sentence he has none. So Nya! :p

Amazing. What I was calling appalling was the degree of laziness it takes to spend a few minutes making oneself look intelligent. I mean, come on. This isn't a UT deathmatch session where a little time costs you frags.

owa: Cry your pardon, gunslinger. :o
So, can we get back to the topic without the torches and pitchforks?
owa: *Searching for Seto a little more* Hm... Bing H Seto's Discus World, tropical fish-related. If that's the one, I'll have to laugh myself to death.
Seto seems to be a city in Japan... http://www.city.seto.aichi.jp/ for those who can make sense of japanese.
Perhaps pottery? http://www.fujiyaantiques.com/items/44000/item44000store.html
... Yeah, a warrior named after a kind of pottery. Riiight. Then again, Seto was kind of petrified.
