hi again!
i talked with that friend of mine again... (well you try to have a lot of friend in israel! this ppls are :skull::skull::skull::skull:ing shalow!!! ever hard of "mizrahit"?) and he told me that after you (spoiler*) bring chrono back to life (end of spoiler*) chrono and you go to the old man (forgoted his name) at the end of time, he talk of some of the side quest you can do, and mention "but first, there is a close friend that need you help" or something like it (i know! my englise sucks!) my friend serched again and again for this "side quest" (by the way, the old dude says the cyrus quest as well in the side quest you can do, so it isnt it, im not stupid <or is IT?>), and the old man says that its someone close to you even with magus not in your group, but i think there is a conection to schala, do YOU know what the mining of this secret side quest?

There are all sorts of side quests in Chrono Trigger. Mainly it's just bettering the lives of people in the future by doing stuff in the past, and ultimately scoring better items. I dont think there's any real relevance to the plot in it. If I remember right, the 'someone close to you', is Marle's father, or perhaps even Lucca's mother. It doesnt have anything to do with Schala, though.

You may wanna check out www.gamefaqs.com to find more detailed explinations of the side quests.

I believe that when the old man refers to a close friend in need of your help, he is reffering to Lucca's mother, and saving her from her father's machine.

FYI, if you want to mark your spoilers, you can use the tags.

No, I'm sure that "Someone close to you" is Marle's Father, Guardia King.

Saving Lucca's mother from the machines is part of that "Saving the Forest" sidequest.

"Someone close to you" refers to Queen Zeal. After Lavos vaporizes the Black Dream, Gaspar stops making this reference, so there's no argument.

I remember Gaspar stopping making this reference when I completed Marle's sidequest.

Maybe I'm wrong I need to play CT again. I'll add it to my queue list.

I'm pretty sure it is Queen Zeal that he means. After all, you don't have to go through the Black Omen to win the game, it's just extra. However, if you do complete everything, then and only then will you be able to get into New Game+ mode.

I thought you get New Game+ when you just complete it regardless of how many sidequest things you do? I'm pretty sure I got it after I first completed the game, and I didn't know about Lucca's/Save the Forest sidequest back then.

true, i think. if you complete ALL of the sidequests, Gaspar will say "I have had glimpses of events and people that will power you up: find this person fast." That's it.
but after you kill the Black Omen, defeat Zeal and Lavos (the outter shell only), he will say "So she (Zeal) is finally able to rest...(or something like that)...go! the world depends on you!" (or something like that, i have a horrible memory)

You dont need to complete any sidequets to get New Game Plus, to note.

but gasper (i think its gasper... i have a trible memory too...) says its someone close to you, even if magus not in your party, and i dont think zeal is close to crono and co. (alltough she sposet to be ayla's grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand doughter and one of marle's grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand mother) (whats bring me to a game paradox, if magus dies, schala's place is on knowen, and zeal is about to become :skull::skull::skull::skull:ing dead, how could marle exsist?) so i think they havent ment her, and its not lucca's mother, cause the old dude says it as another side quest...

Queen Zeal is supposed to be Marle's grarnd-grand-...-grandmother?

Uh?

It's presumed that, because Marle has a pendant like Sarah's, the Guardia line is made up of descendants of the Zeal royal family.

And master, if you dont think that its zeal thando this: Talk to Gasper just to verify that he says " someone close to you neds help..." then beat the black omen. You automaically fight the lavos shell. as soon as you go inside, theres a gate. go to the end of time and Gasper says something about finally she can rest, or finally shes free (its written pretty close above). Gasper WILL not say this until you beat the black omen...how much more proof can u need?

and tough,
i want something that will match the side quest title... mybe its something inside the ship?
zeal isnt no one friend and as i said, gaspar said that a "friend" needs help... i dont think that zeal is there friend (or its the story of "so what if we try to kill one each other in a painfull death, lets put are diffrecens aside and be good friends!")

and by the way, Ayla, congraduletion for your new grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand- doughter! send us an e-mail with her cute little face with the little purple hair, holding a sowrd or tring to bring lavos back to life will ya? and what about the joungle ceremony! ooga booga ooga booga dance like mountine pepoles!!!

Magus might consider his mom a friend.

the thing is gasper says that iven if you decided to kill magus...

Flying Mullet

SNES carts had very little space on them for dialogue. Most likely it took up too much space to set up a conditional as to whether or not Magus is dead or not and then to add two set of text, vs. one. American translators often talk about that in interviews, because youcan say more in less space in japanese with kanji, so they always have to fight to cram in what they can in the limited space. So what might be more than enough dialogue room in japanese is too little for english.

it's been a while since i played, but i think he says something more along the lines of "someone close to you needs help, find this person fast" or something in that direction i don't remember the word "friend" even being used there, and as others have said before me he only stops saying it after you defeat Queen Zeal in the Black Omen... i always thaught that "someone close" could refer to an ancestor or descendant, they don't have to be friendly to be close just have the same bloodline...

It's true, close doesn't mean friend. You HAVE come into contact with her before at that point, and she HAS had a rather big impact on the party.

Magus might consider his mom a friend.

one thing is did you not heard magus say to schala she isn't our mom
so magus is no familie of queen zeal

He means that the insane person Queen Zeal has become isnt really his mother. She's changed so much that she's become a different person. Magus is Queen Zeal's son, that's fact.

It's presumed that, because Marle has a pendant like Sarah's, the Guardia line is made up of descendants of the Zeal royal family.

Considering that Queen Zeal had only two children and Janus was living in middle ages (so he's not Marle's ancestor), Schala would have to be Marle's grand-grand-...-grandmother, but she had no kids before the events in the Ocean Palace (when she disappeared).

That's why I don't think that Marle is really descendant of Queen Zeal. I think that she actually is descendant of some survivor from Zeal, one of those "Enlightened Ones" people....

The "Someone close to you" sidequest is the Black Omen sidequest.

The pendant isn't necessarily passed on - Doan doesn't have such a pendant, for example. Most likely it was acquired by some random person after the fall of Zeal, who started the Guardia line.

edit: It's generally accepted the Line of Guardia was started by the Elder of the Earthbound Ones.

"Someone close to you" refers to Queen Zeal. After Lavos vaporizes the Black Dream, Gaspar stops making this reference, so there's no argument.

When does Lavos vaporize it? You vaporize it when you Fight Zeal and defeat her, thus blowing up the omen

To clear up the discussion earlier, Gaspar (yes it is Gaspar) will mention all the sidequests regardless of who is in your party.

BTW, I don't think Lucca's mom is actually part of Fiona's Villa sidequest.

Gaspar is the one at the End of Time, yes. Balthasar is the one who built the Epoch, and Melchior is the one who lives outside the Monster Village. Or, if you prefer, Gaspar, Balthasar and Melchior are the three kings that are said to have presented the infant Jesus with gifts.

"[...] Additionally, Woolsey did make mistakes in places. For instance, take the line:

Gaspar: One of you is close to someone who needs help. Find this person, fast.

It was supposed to read something to the effect of, 'For matters concerning each time era, talk to your teammates.' It's a hint telling you to talk to the various player characters standing around the End of Time; upon doing so, they will provide information about the sidequests in their home eras. The original meaning was heavily distorted, and led to endless discussion in the community before a proper translation was given. [...]"

Go to Chrono Compendium (http://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Retranslation.html) and look up for all the differences between what the japanese meant and the NA translators ended up mistranslating. I hope what I just said has put an end to the "secret side quest" doubt. :)

My problem with it being Zeal is that, once you defeat Zeal in the Black Omen, he quits giving any of the side-quest descriptions, IIRC. Even if you complete the Black Omen first, I'm fairly sure you just get the Zeal talk and then nothing else from him for the rest of the game. So I've always had a very slight suspicion about it not being Zeal.
