so let's say i equip some materia on a character that's not currently in my 3-member party. i know they receive EXP, but is it the same for AP as well? i just wanted to balance out my materia since there's too many to possibly equip on just 3 characters.

No, they dont. Only the three characters in your current party receive AP and EXP

Inactive characters receive half the amount of experience gained by the active party. I don't recall how this applies to AP, but I doubt that there is any AP growth in materia equipped on inactive characters.
