Fantasy Baseball

Alright, this thread is to help in the formation and planning of a Yahoo fantasy baseball league. I was told by eestlinc that sign-ups begin next week, but I'm getting highly impatient, and finding people that'd like to play this early allows us for more time to plan everything out.

First thing's first: If you want to join the league, by all means! We had a very successful 10-team league last year, which Del Murder laid claim as champion to. I'm sure no one would mind 12 or 14 teams, if we were to find that many interested parties.

Second thing: How would we score the league? Last year, we kept track of nearly everything imaginable, and it made things a lot more interesting than with just the Yahoo default. If there's anything everyone'd like to add or subtract, though, that's what this is for.

Third thing: Scheduling a draft. Yeah, I'd like to do a live draft, if everyone was up to it, but it'd be a little later in the morning than 6 AM for us West Coast people. With so much time to plan, it allows everyone involved to hit upon an agreed draft date and time.

Soooo. . . yeah. Anyone who wants in, just post up and let us know. Everyone that's everyone can join, so don't be shy! :D

I did like having a lot of categories as well, though some were redundant like innings pitched and K/9. Does anyone remember all the categories from last year?

I can't remember all of 'em, but we counted pretty much everything in the book except for doubles.

All I recall is that there were twenty of them because the highest score was a 200, which Del almost achieved by the end of the year....

I'm more than game again and this time, I'm actually going to participate in the draft and not just leave it to the computer to make my team.

Sometime in the early evening after 6pm would work for me for a livedraft: (Eastern time).

Hits, Runs, RBI, HR, BB, AVG, OBP, Triples, Steals, Putouts, Assists, Fileding percentage for hitters

Innings, Wins, Saves, ERA, WHIP, K, K/BB, K/9 for pitchers

That was last year's totals. I suggest eliminating K/9 and innings and adding doubles. Maybe add holds too? That at least gives nonclosing relievers some value.

Considering I had Kyle Farnsworth, Octavio Dotel and Brad Lidge for long periods of time last year, I'd be for that.

I'll look into it, if it's possible.

And it might be a dumb question, but I have to ask: Is the defending champion in?

What exactly is a keepers league? Is there any way to create one for us? I know I'd have kept some of my players from last year if we played with keepers...

In keepers league you keep your players from last year. That's the major difference, I'm sure there are other rules based on rookies and stuff. Using the draft and getting a new team each year is one of the most fun parts though, so I wouldn't like it.

Honestly, now that I think about it, I'd only keep two players, so perhaps I'll just draft them first and then create a whole new team.

I suggest doing aleague with the only scored stats being Runs scored and ERA. For the record, if you redid our standings from last season using only those two categories, only one or two people would have swtiched places. Del would still have won, I would have been second, etc. Kinda interesting.

Anyway, 6pm EST would be about the worst possible time for me. I'd prefer noon EST. Anyway, during the month of March I'm working every day between 6-9 PM EST, so that's why I'm opposed. I suppose I could take a day off but I'drather not use vacation for that.

For stats, we need to have a balance between hitting and pitching stats so one isn't more valuable than the other. Unless you want it that way. I mean, if we have 12 hitting/fielding categories and 7 pitching categories, it makes pitchers highly undervalued. Maybe not though, if you say a top closer is only good at three categories or so but absolutely essential for those same categories.

Anyway, I suggest these categories:

hitting: avg, obp, slug, H, BB, HR, SB, RBI

fielding: po,as,fp

pitching: era, whip, wins, saves, holds, K, K/BB, BAA (batting average against, if that's an option)

doubles and triples seem somewhat extraneous and i like the balance of categories I proposed. The fielding are a nice balancer since they punish you for playing people out of position (like using a DH as your 1B, Pujols as your 3B (although you can't do that anymore) etc.)

If it were closer to noon EST, that would work perfectly for me on Tuesday and Thursday, not to mention the weekends. Personally, I have nothing on those days save for an evening class, but that's later than you East Coasters are probably lookin' at.

At the very least, can everyone agree on either Tuesday or Thursday? Might as well throw that out there to begin with. We can work out the time logistics once we get more teams.

EDIT: 162 games in the year * 9 innings = 1458 innings. What did we have, 1250 last year? We can't just have millions and millions of innings because that's stupid. The point is to have good players and make the best of the innings you have, not to start guys willnilly and run out of innings in August *cough*Captain*cough*. Something between 1250 and 1450 is acceptable.

On top of that, though, not all starters go nine innings in every single start of a season, and most relievers don't pitch more than two at a time. What Cap'n did was really just one strategy: build up your stats as much as possible, then try to weather your opponents. I thought 1250 was okay, seeing as I personally ran out of innings within the final week of the season, but I suppose we could raise it slighty. 1300.

1250 is too low for the number of pitchers we had. 1300-1400 seems right. 1300 maybe. then again, we might not have a choice.

How does it feel down there? I was down there last year... Well actually ed was, but I was right next to him.

I'm moved from last, to second last, to third a few times within the last two weeks. What dropped me in this whole was when I didn't check for like the first week and I found myself down to like 80 points. I'm still surprised I climbed out of that hole. Yeah, it sucks but I still like participating. :) Fantasy Football is my real area of expertise though.

Yes Mondays suck. At least Vlad socked one. He's shown that he is still one of the elite players in this league, though in retrospect I think I should have picked Beltran because I'm getting killed in the speed department. Carlos Beltran is the one player in this fantasy league that helps you with every stat category but one, assists. And that's only because he's an outfielder.

Today was an exceptionally good one for my team actually, despite having only 4 active players. Casey keeps hitting, Pierre gets 4 RBI's and a scoreless inning of relief from a Houston reliever.

Everyone except in the Angels game.

Great pitching duel with Escobar getting 11K, 0R with only one walk in 8 innings, and Sheets pitching some one hit 0R ball all the way through the ninth.

Milwaukee's given up only one hit (to Vladdy), one walk (intentional to Vladdy) and no runs after 12 innings. Against a lineup like the Angels, that's very impressive.
