The Lifestream?
Perducci
04-05-2005, 08:48 PM
The Mako that Sephiroth is inside in the Northern Crater?
In a Mako Reactor
Lies the Lifestream
Not quite true, but fits the riddle.
Lenna
04-06-2005, 02:42 AM
Yeah but Mako is the flow of the lifestream isn't it? When people die their souls return to the lifestream then create a new life. And Mako is drawn from the lifestream, without the lifestream there are no lives and without mako, there is no Lifestream?

In the Mako shell,
Lies Sephy (did someone already say this one xD?)

No, all of those were wrong... and my own stupid riddle is making me sad...
You guys are too unfocused... it's really specific... and... optional.
Hmmmmm... maybe if I gave another line?
In an un-natural powerhouse
Lies a natural powerhouse
Surrounded by past and future bound
That better? We'll see...

Twelve ways to see, twelve ways to go.
Take one there that comes with Throw.
She'll meet her fate, or will she not?
It's time to take back your spot.
The watery one will be your treat
If you manage to defeat.
Too easy...

04-06-2005, 11:09 PM
DaremihC don't worry too much, your riddle wasn't that bad. I kept circling round a materia that was in a Mako reactor, and kept thinking of Ultima, but that seemed like you'd have mentioned the well instead. I don't quite get the extra clue though...
My guess for the new riddle is Wutai side quests...
Twelve ways to see, twelve ways to go. (No idea)
Take one there that comes with Throw. (Yuffie has to come with you)
She'll meet her fate, or will she not? (The scene on the mountain)
It's time to take back your spot. (Spot I guess being a reference to materia)
The watery one will be your treat (Leviathan)
If you manage to defeat. (The pagoda)
EDIT: If thats right someone else take the next riddle.

Yea, the twelve part was because the padoga had 12 floors, I think.
Llanowar

try 5 floors one for each of the people you fight.
cmon people at least check facts when writing a riddle or entire lines don't fit.

Supernova.
Lenna
04-07-2005, 05:16 AM
blah I can only think of Black Materia/Dark Matter or "Calamity of the Skies". which is jenova. unless it's something to do with the City of the ancients? or the weapons.
Wait.. Has it anything to do with Hojo?
Masamune·1600
04-07-2005, 05:27 AM
Super Nova is correct! Luthien Rogue, you're up.
For those who are curious, the riddle can be broken down as follows. "...challenges space / And time" refers to the destruction of the planets (space) and the well-known duration of the animation (time). The "impossibility" refers to the fact that, if cast more than once, SN destroys the same planets again. Clearly it's just part of the animation, but it's an impossiblity if one takes the animation literally. "The trademark of darkness..." refers to the fact that SN is Safer Sephiroth's signature move, so to speak. "Channeling light" refers to the light (SN) that one sees approaching the characters. "Almost unto death" refers to the actual battle mechanics effect of SN; your characters will have critical HP (and possibly some annoying statuses) after the technique is used.

Right Luthien Rogue pmmed me asking if I wanted to take their turn on here, so I thank you Luthien!!!! :D, My riddles quite tricky, you need to think carefully bout it. So here goes.
As many things that could not have been,
I am the one, these thing's I've seen,
The horror of this mutany,
Has beaten the world so brutally.
A face amongst the light of hope,
While on my own I had to cope,
But I am not who I may seem,
I lived to see this horrid dream.
DaremihC
04-07-2005, 09:15 PM
Oy... this one's crypic.
As many things that could not have been, [?]
I am the one, these thing's I've seen, [This could be Sephiroth or Jenova, maybe Cloud.]
The horror of this mutany, [Rebelling against something? Like the planet or the ancients? Or something more... mundane?
Has beaten the world so brutally. [That sounds like Meteor (or maybe Shinra)]
A face amongst the light of hope, the end where cloud sees Aerith's face in the lifestream,[/spoiler] but it may refer to Jenova... maybe. ]
[I]While on my own I had to cope, [Cloud had was without Aerith, but Sephy had no friends.]
But I am not who I may seem, [This fits with Sephy at the end and Jenova, and Cloud because he isn't who he thought he was]
I lived to see this horrid dream. [The whole meteor business.]
On a second evaluation, this riddle fits well with Vincent too... except in line 4.

i bet u its got to be vincent valentine? right?
Llanowar
04-08-2005, 02:51 PM
I'm thinking Lucrecia actually not vincent.
one_winged_angel
04-08-2005, 07:18 PM
I thought Vincent:
As many things that could not have been, (Maybe referring to the kind of monster/human hybrid type things like "the thing that should not be" kinda whoseit)
I am the one, these thing's I've seen, (He is one because he transforms into monsters)
The horror of this mutany, ( he left shinra and then attacked them)
Has beaten the world so brutally. (Not too sure.... Maybe the fact that everything is in chaos during Avalanche's rebellion?)
A face amongst the light of hope, (Probably referring to Avalanche, he's a face among the people that save the planet)
While on my own I had to cope, (He was on 'is lonesome all the time he was asleep)
But I am not who I may seem, (Could be referring either to his mysterious nature or to the fact that he transforms into beasts etc.)
I lived to see this horrid dream. (He always goes on about his nightmare)
Lenna
04-08-2005, 07:37 PM
Sorry Vincent was already said :(
Not Vincent,
Cloud,
Zack,
Jenova,
Sephiroth,
Barret,
Red XIII
or Lucrecia
And the answer IS a person.
DaremihC
04-08-2005, 08:13 PM
Hmm... I'll try again... but use elimination.
It's NOT: Vincent, Cloud, Zack, Jenova, Sephiroth, Barret, Red XIII, Lucrecia
8. I lived to see this horrid dream. [Who dosn't die?]
We have (minus the previous list) Tifa, Cid, Yuffie, Cait (kinda), Marlene?, and the Turks... I think thats all the relevant people...
1. As many things that could not have been, [Still no clue]
2. I am the one, these thing's I've seen, [Like line 8]
6. While on my own I had to cope, [Who was on their own?]
Yuffie (before the party), Marlene, maybe Elena.
Those dosn't seem to fit too well, so scrathing point one...
Bugenhagen, Seto (not likeley), Rufus (again, not likeley). I know I'm missing some people...
7. But I am not who I may seem, [Okay... now I'm in trouble...]
I would say... Bugenhagen... one of the Turks, maybe. Tseng...
3. The horror of this mutany,
4. Has beaten the world so brutally.
Bugenhagen? (I think I'm on to something) The Turks? Tseng?
5. A face amongst the light of hope,
Okay... I think I'm gonna have to go with...
Tseng
Lenna
04-08-2005, 11:55 PM
OOOOOOO so close, but your final answer isnt correct. And I thought Tseng dies in the temple of the ancients?
but if someone mentions the name in their evaluation although they dont think it is? would I have to give it to them.
Llanowar
04-09-2005, 12:08 AM
after reading the last batch of reasoning I am actually leaning towards Elena not Tseng.
Lenna
04-09-2005, 12:17 AM
nope
DaremihC

04-09-2005, 05:18 AM
It's Marlene, I'm pretty sure.
Lenna
04-09-2005, 06:52 PM
abrojtm is right, It's Marlene,
As many things that could not have been, (to a child, these things don't really sink in as bad until they're older. she doesn't realise what's really going on as she's still young.)
I am the one, these thing's I've seen, (she's been a spectator through the game but she's been through alot. She was orphaned as a baby, and taken in by Barret , she's see what happened in Sector 7, she saw Tseng kidnap Aeris and she also saw the meteor at the end
The horror of this mutany, (just refering to all that went on through the game.)
Has beaten the world so brutally. (meteor, shinra, the weapons)
A face amongst the light of hope, (In the end you see Marlenes face looking out the window, while holy/lifestream was doing their work)
While on my own I had to cope, (She was left alone in the world after the incident in corel until Barret came to her rescue. then Barret left her again *with a complete stranger may I add, in pursuit of saving the world.)
But I am not who I may seem, (referring to the fact you'd think of many people before her.. she is not your first instinct to this riddle.)
I lived to see this horrid dream. (again refering to the second line)
Congratulations abrojtm

A menacing power I dost hold.
Ultimate power from days of old:
Ranging elements tear at their souls,
And weapons bash their ugly skulls.
KWEH. WARK.
I guessed KotR initially based on "Ultimate power" (referencing Ultimate End), the combination of weapons and (apparent) elements, and the chocobo sounds suggesting the need for a Gold Chocobo. However, having reconsidered, I believe the riddle may refer to:
Master Summon materia.
Even moreso than KotR, this would be the ultimate power (especially since KotR is still included). The summons cover a vast range of elements, and weapons appear in both Odin animations, as well as the KotR animation. As to "Kweh/Wark", Choco-Mog is a summon.

Eh, I'll just give it to Masamune. The answer I was looking for was actually Round Island, but since you pretty much figured everything out (except for the hidden clue), I think it's fair for you to have it. Oh, and I mentioned elements because the animation shows like 4 of the Knights using elemental spells.

Two of the lines are references to another FF game, If you havn't played it, this riddle will be much harder. For you and cloud, concentrate on the second and fourth lines (the most vague lines) and you might pull it off (it has do do with chocobos).
It was kind of an unfair riddle... didn't take much time to make it...

Edit: This is very far fetched but here goes
The riddle is refering to the FFX Time race with the chocobo which doesn't have carrots to make you faster and the fleeting memory refers to Tidus.

No, but an ok guess... The answer to the riddle IS a part of FFVII, however. Lines 1 and 3 correspond to a previous FF game, whereas 2 and 4 are for FFVII (but your explanation of the carrot causes line 1 to work for FFVII as well).

Okay I have a feeling the riddle might be a completely different style to this (I suspect possibly a line by line deal), but if not I think its about Cait Sith in the Temple of the Ancients.
The person that unravels.
The mystery within. (As one sentence these lines make sense as two the whole Temple sequence, but they're split...)
It crushes him. (Well yeah...)
Nonsense. (Again not sure, there is the scene with Cloud and Aeris etc. that fits here, but I don't know...)
He returns again. (Cait Sith 2)
Out of the two, who is who? (Just a reference to the two Caits)
I think it could work, but again I suspect this riddle is in a completely different style.

PA's got half the riddle right, and everything he has said is completely right. I figured the last line would need some clarification, so here it is.

Good luck. ;)

Hmmm, in that case I would go with Cloud, however thats already been guessed, unless you just want the reason...
The person that unravels.
The mystery within. (The Cloud/ Zack deal)
It crushes him. (his mental state after the lifestream)
Nonsense. (the way he talks after the lifestream)
He returns again. (Cloud after the memory scene)
Out of the two, who is who?
Very nice riddle by the way, I like the idea, though I'm not sure if I'm right as kyuzo already said this...
Yes, that's it. Glad it didn't take terribly long to finish. :p Either PA or kyuzo may go, I suppose, since both of them provided parts to it, but PA did explain the answer better. I'll try and make it a little more complex next time, but it gets harder to write than it is to solve. :)
It's funny, because to make this one I just typed up random sentences and then just stared at them until they began to congeal around an event in the game. It was pretty fun making it that way - try it out. ;)

Not by any means a bad guess (Though way off the answer), but I tend to be a little trickier than that :D . Some of the clues in here are as obvious as they sound, but this riddle is a lot more specific than that. This riddle is unsolvable (except through guesswork) if you don't look at all of it.

Well, it kinda sucks that I can't seem to draw Earth Harp and Desert Rose out of the first 4 lines. Was I on the right track?
I am able to draw summons out of them, though. The first line talks about Hades, then you talk about Titan, then I guess you talk about Pheonix, but after that, I'm stuck. Is that on the right track?
Llanowar
04-17-2005, 07:25 PM
Ok the first two lines are referring to the darkness in cloud's heart and the next two are referring to his awakening by Tifa. The price to be paid is the suffering Cloud goes through. and the two of them together is when Cloud and Tifa are in the lifestream.
Thus my answer is the Lifestream.
PhoenixAsh
04-17-2005, 10:38 PM
Man I thought I'd made this a lot more obvious... Llanowar is the closet to getting the right approach to the riddle, although his answer is again way off. I see the logic behind Cloud and Tifa, but its a bit to vague, try reading the first four lines more carefully, and more literally.
Weimar I guess you're used to my lines having hidden meanings, and whilst yes this riddle does have a trick, its a different sort than most of my others.
I don't personally think its a problem, and it confuses the line a bit, or give away that part of the answer if I explained it, but there is a slight issue with the wording of line three. Don't worry about it (or think about it in trying to solve this in my opinion), but if you come up with an idea, don't dismiss it on a technicality about that line.

In the hearts of the damned,
Lies the scourge of the land.
In an orb and a bird,
Can new hope now be heard.
If the two are together,
Then the price has been paid.
So the question I ask,
Is just where was the trade?
Let's see....
"In the hearts of the damned / Lies the scourge of the land"
The scourge of the land, from an initial reading, could arguably be any of the following: Sephiroth, Jenova, Hojo, Meteor, the original crater, Black Materia, Rufus, President Shinra, Shinra (the company), its employees, Midgar, Mako reactors, WEAPON, or humanity in general. Or even something else. I'll narrow this down as I consider the rest of the riddle.
"In an orb and a bird / Can a new hope be heard"
The most apparent connotation here is Phoenix materia, which incorporates the concepts of orb, bird, and (new) hope. However, Fort Condor has already been dismissed as an answer, so I'll reconsider the line's meaning. Bird, taken literally, could possibly refer to the following: anything Chocobo related, or it could refer to the fight for 10 Phoenix downs with the birds on the way to North Corel. I don't think bird is meant literally, however, and this will be reflected in my final answer.
"If the two are put together, / Then the price has been paid. / So the question I ask / Is just where was the trade?"
Price can, it seems, have a literal or metaphorical meaning here. I think the riddle ultimately hinges on, however, determining just what is being referred to by "trade."
I fear this is off, but I'm nevertheless going to guess that the location referred to is the Water Altar under the Forgotten Capital/City of the Ancients. Hearts of the damned/scourge of the land could refer to Seph, with additional emphasis possibly added to Jenova. The orb could be Holy materia; the bird Aeris' prayer (flying up?), and the potential effects of Holy the new hope. If Seph and Aeris are together at the Water Altar, we all know what happens. This then would be the trade, and the price paid: a prayer for Holy, at the expense of Aeris' life.
PhoenixAsh
04-17-2005, 11:52 PM
Although that isn't actually how the riddle is solved, it was done extremely thoroughly... and a REMARKABLE stroke of fluke and reasoning produced the exact answer!
The actual solution to this riddle is as follows:
In the hearts of the damned,
Lies the scourge of the land. (This is talking about Jenova, the 'scourge of the land' referring to her past, and the first line referring to the clones, its all quite literal)
In an orb and a bird,
Can new hope now be heard. (New hope is referring to revival, which obviously comes from Phoenix, and also through the magic materia, the in game term being Life)
If the two are together, (Jenova Life)
Then the price has been paid. (Comes straight after Aeris' death)
So the question I ask,
Is just where was the trade? (The alter, the trade as masamune1600 said being that of Aeris' life for the prayer for Holy)
I think I may actually prefer masamune1600's reasons more though :D . Well done anyway, take it away!

I am going to guess the scorpion and the other robot from the two mako plants. ( it's been too long dont hang me on not knowing the names.) Both of them fall before Cloud's sword, but only one is defeated before the fiery explosion of reactor no. 8 (I think it was 8).
Yea I went from the easy end of the spectrum to pretty obscure in terms of the "brother" reference, but whatever.

Ok we are looking for two "people" in the game whose names are similar, but they look nothing or at least nearly nothing alike. They work for the same person. They both die I am assuming by Cloud's or Sephy's sword.(I am assuming Sephy's) One dies before (either in time or in front of) a flame/fire while the other does not.
aiding the source of limitations ire I would assume means either Sephiroth or Jenova. Which on is anyone's guess, in reality they could be interchangeable in this instance.

This answer will be completely wrong if I've forgotten how the Yuffie sidequest goes, and due to that switches my answer between the Turks, and Reno and Rude only.
By name we might be brothers, (The Turks, OR the R in Reno and Rude)
though in form it not be so. (Either the standard differences between Turks, or the fairly opposite nature of Reno and Rude)
Though we serve the same master, (Either Shinra or the Turks)
And in his service go. (The missions)
Go before the blade, (They fight Cloud)
Yet only one before the fire (My only idea here is of the Wutai Mountains, which I can't remember if Reno and Rude go up, if its just Elena or both, then I guess Turks, if one or the other I guess Reno and Rude)
Ironically to aid the source
Of limitation's ire. (They help Yuffie...or possibly Reno says not to fight Cloud, I can't remember)
Llanowar the Phoenix/ Revive line was to point to the specific answer Life. A new hope is far too vague a clue if I wanted people to link two specific words together before they could solve it. I did make that riddle quite straightforward, noone gets my riddles if I do them normally now!

though in form it not be so. (one is a monster, one is a sword)
Though we serve the same master,

Go before the blade (one is used to fight Sephiroth, and one is fought by Cloud.)
Yet only one before the fire (you have to forge a blade, no?)

ForestOwl is correct! The answer is indeed Aps and Rapps. Further, all of her explanations are correct. I stand and fight. (The character fights during the game, I believe this could be Weapon as he stands before Rufus(who could be classed as great / powerful due to his title) and fights back as well as fighting the characters in the game.)
I am the protecter of hope
Though I'm devoid of light. (the Weapon's orignal purpose is to protect the planet from jenova and destroy her, but before they could be used the Cetra had already destroyed her. They then went into hibernation. But Sephiroth intervened and managed to wake and control them. therefore they are originally the protector of hope but they have no light/goodness in them as they are being controlled by evil at the current time)
'What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger'
A phrase that I stand by no longer. (I believe this means the person has given up on the meaning of that phrase and feels that there is no point. or as someone else said, they are possibly dead. So I think that Weapon fits with this as he dies during the process of fighting with Rufus and his almighty mako cannon <3)
My name is what you need
A name given by those my master made bleed." (who has a master? the clones, the weapons, the turks (but Shin-Ra weren't really part of any killing ingame.) the cetra (their master was basically the world. The Weapons were actually created and given their names by the Cetra if I am correct, and Sephiroth was combined with jenova who wanted to destroy the Cetra and succeeded at times, then Sephiroth killed the las

1. Implies a character in the game.
2. Implies a good character, but one perhaps with a dark past.
3. Implies character is dead, or is stronger in death or next life.
4. Implies character is former servant, or soldier.

"In the presence of greatness

I'm not sure if they actually named her or if the cetra named her jenova, I know she was the "calamity from the skies" but I don't know if they were the ones who named her. this could explain part of it.)

Everything you just said was, sadly, wrong. The answer is much more obscure than Jenova. Here is a clue to help you out I appear quite early in the game

so you think you are turning into me huh Reno. Well apparently not because you can at least solve riddles. Well not the one I am usually working on, but then again noone else can solve it either. :)
Ok my assumptions are that this is someone who either actually is in battle or has a "fight" with someone in power possible pres. Shinra, etc,
secondly the protector of hope though devoid of light. This could refer to anyone who fought to protect Aeris(what i perceive as hope) even though they don't feel they have any hope left.
The third stanza I believe refers to the fact that they do Die at some point although possibly not when u meet them early on. (It probably is at that time since most people who do actually die do die early on.)
the fourth stanza might be referring to a name that you need in order to pass by some certain obstacle.
My guess is the Midgar Zolom. fights Sephy. Loses and "dies" yea w/e

lolol!!! Llanowar I can only solve easy riddles =P, You have a much better idea at gaining ANY idea's from Thingfish's riddle lol =P I can't think of anything from that riddle!!! but when you solve that riddle I shall bow down to you =P hehe but, yeah, I usually just, guess an answer and that's, but from all the posts you've posted with explanations of everything, it's given me an insight to look deeper into riddles, so I'm doing alot better at thinking of things that I usually get one or two answer from and that's it.
If the answer is not Midgar Zolom, is this character/thing one that we fight, or is it just part of a side story, like the Midgar Zolom was (after all, the midgar zolom had nothing to do with cloud & the gang at that point in time, it was only a view point.)
anyway, *Thinks*
Could it be GI Nattak... I'm just thinking like. (The boss before you see Seto.. the leader of the GI Tribe)
GI was in the cave that Seto was in, you could say he was protecting it as well as invading it. GI was undead, but still dead never the less. It was sort of in the presence of Seto as it was in the same cave, he was greater than most as he was a true warrior to his kind. and about the Name thing/master I have no idea.

"In the presence of greatness
I stand and fight.
I am the protecter of hope
Though I'm devoid of light.
'What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger'
A phrase that I stand by no longer.
My name is what you need
A name given by those my master made bleed."
Who am I?
Time for some line-by-line analysis.
"In the presence of greatness"
Self-explanatory, although what it actually refers to remains to be seen.
"I stand and fight."
ForestOwl has noted that this characters either fights in battle, or otherwise stands against a powreful force, an example of which would be President Shinra.
"I am the protecter of hope"
According to ForestOwl, this character did fight to protect someone else.
"Though I'm devoid of light."
Seems to be a critical line. This could suggest that the character has dark or ignoble tendencies, or it could reference the character's death, or it could refer to a physical condition (the slums of Midgar, for example, are blocked from sunlight by the Plate).
"'What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger'"
Needs to be understood within the context of the next line....
"A phrase that I stand by no longer."
This suggests, of course, that the above character has died, a fact which has already been confirmed.
"My name is what you need"
Self-explanatory. The context of 'need', however, has yet to be established. This could refer to anything from a password, to this individual granting the party access to somewhere, to a number of other possibilities.
"A name given by those my master made bleed."
ForestOwl has said that the name refers both to the character and to a larger concept. It also seems that the master or leader of said individual has wronged or otherwise upset some group or entity.
Now, if the character dies early on, I'm going to assume that the character dies before the party reaches the second continent. In that case, the death must take place at one of a variety of locations: Midgar, Kalm, Nibelheim (via the flashback, maybe. I don't really like this since it takes place in the past, and is an altered version of events, anyway), the Chocobo Farm, Mythril Mine, For Condor, Lower Junon, Junon, and the cargo ship. Logic, of course, points totally to Midgar.
A number of individuals die in Midgar. Notable are Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie; the inhabitants of the Sector 7 Slums; President Shinra; the train conductor (apparently); the Beginner's Hall group (some of their spirits can be seen, amusingly, in Junon); or any enemy that the party itself defeats.
I think it's either Biggs, Wedge, or Jessie, but I'm probably wrong. I know that there's something I'm overlooking at the moment.
Lenna
04-25-2005, 07:05 PM
It's possible that it could be Biggs, Wedge or Jessie, but she is looking for one character, and that riddle could refer to all three, as for mentioning President Shinra, your theory has made me look deeper into that thought.
He could be referred as the protector of hope as if you recall what he says in the meeting with the rest of the Shinra managers/staff, he says that no matter what the people will still gain hope from shinra if they promise to protect them. EVEN if their intentions are not clearly uncovered. You met him in the 5th reactor, then he dies about half an hour to an hour later depending on how quick you are in the game.
ForestOwl has said that the name refers both to the character and to a larger concept. It also seems that the master or leader of said individual has wronged or otherwise upset some group or entity.
President Shinra had upset many for his misuse of mako and also for the nasty things he allowed to happen to innocent people. as for the master image, I am unsure.
So I assume it could be president Shinra.
Any other guesses I have would have, would have been Tseng, Dyne or the Condor which dies ontop of the Fort Condor Reactor after you've defeated the Shinra Army

I'm not sure if this is even the name, and I can't fit the last line, but is it Dark Nation? If thats what I think it is my reasoning should be fairly obvious.
Lenna

Dark Nation is correct if you're on about the dog that protects Rufus in the Shinra building. and it's quite a good guess, as he is always protecting Rufus with barriers and magic barriers but only he ends up dead. good one phoenix, if its right that is.
TheSpoonyBard
04-25-2005, 09:17 PM
PhoenixAsh is right! The answer was Dark Nation.
"In the presence of greatness
I stand and fight.(Fights alongside Rufus)
I am the protecter of hope(For the Shinra Inc he was their hope of finding the Promised Land and completing the Neo-Midgar plan)
Though I'm devoid of light.(Reference to 'Dark')
'What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger'(You receive a Guard Source and a Protect Vest upon defeating Rufus and Dark Nation)
A phrase that I stand by no longer.(Dark Nation is now dead)
My name is what you need(You need the answer to the riddle)
A name given by those my master made bleed."(Residents of Midgar and Kalm may see Shinra's oppression as having created a dark nation in which they now live)
PhoenixAsh's turn now.
Lenna

I am the protecter of hope(For the Shinra Inc he was their hope of finding the Promised Land and completing the Neo-Midgar plan) <-- I hope that was in reference to Rufus and not Dark Nation, as there's nothing said in the game that Dark Nation is actually needed other than to protect Rufus in that one battle.

Okay, I'm still a bit rusty, but I'll give a riddle a go.
From rags to riches he went,
To what could hold the cup of Midas.
As a champion,
He stood against the rain.
As a failure,
All he could do was wipe his tears.
But he was not a selfish man,
He gave his gift away.
Who to?
This might be easy, it might be hard, the key is to understanding exactly what the riddle is asking.

04-26-2005, 03:54 AM
Is it Dio giving the temple key to Cloud?
Lenna
04-26-2005, 10:06 AM
I think it may have been Dyne BUT the answer is asking who did they give their treasure to. If it is Dyne, he gave Barret the amulet/necklace which Dyne treasured. Therefore the answer would be Barret.
As for the "temple key" it's actually a Keystone. Not a key =)
Masamune·1600
04-26-2005, 10:15 AM
Since Dio/Cloud and Dyne/Barret (the two responses which seem most likely) have already been suggested, I'll propose that the answer is Cid and Shera. Riches could refer to his position as a great pilot, and his eminence at becoming, potentially, the first person in space. He would have been a champion at the moment of his seeming triumph, as the rocket prepared for launch--except that Shera was still making adjustments. Had he gone through with the launch, Shera would have been killed. Thus, he ended it, effectively failing. Thus, he gave away his dream to Shera.

It's definitely got something to do with the Gold Saucer. "riches" makes me think of Gold Saucer. Wiping tears makes me think of the tissues you get for losing in the battle square.
Most of the riddle seems to be describing someone who goes from North Corel to the Gold Saucer and fights in the Battle Square, though I'm not sure about the rain part. I can't believe the answer is not Barret. Dyne does what the riddle talks about, then he gives Barret a pendant.
If I'm way off, I needs hints.
All I can think of is the legend of Midas, in which case I would obviously answer the river Pactolus. But this isn't Greek mythology, this is FFVII. And I can't think of anything with a gold gift per se except for Gold Chocobos or the Gold Saucer.
The Dio/Cloud and Dyne/Barret solutions occured to me immediately, and I am also swayed by Seto/Nanaki. If all these are incorrect, I would have to suggest Hojo/Sephiroth - you fight him while it's raining on the Sister Ray, and he gives his gift - Mako energy - to Sephiroth (or tries to).
Weimar Pluto Knight VII
04-28-2005, 08:35 AM
oh, Sephiroth's a great guess. I'm not sure how that ties into the first two lines, though.
Lenna
04-28-2005, 09:36 AM
riches, the Kalm traveller? from rags to riches = when cloud fights the weapons you take them to the Kalm traveller because he "needs" them (they are rare too so they can be classed as riches) then in return, he gives you a Gold Chocobo. so I believe it's the Kalm traveller giving the chocobo to Cloud & the gang.
PhoenixAsh

Weimar, has been the closest so far, but has taken the whole riddle too literally. Some parts are literal, some are less so.
EDIT: Although I personally think it might make the riddle harder, I'll suggest for the possible sake of accuracy, that you can read line four as
'he stood against the elements'.

From rags to riches he went,
To what could hold the cup of Midas.
As a champion,
He stood against the rain.
As a failure,
All he could do was wipe his tears.
But he was not a selfish man,
He gave his gift away.
Who to?
"From rags to riches he went / to what could hold the cup of Midas."
This line would seem to imply that the character in question successfully rose from poverty or something similar to a position of affluence (or the like). It's unclear whether this is the same step, or a totally different one from "To what could hold the cup of Midas", but that doesn't really matter. The "cup of Midas" seems an allusion to gold, suggesting that the Gold Saucer is at play in the riddle. Obviously Corel/Desert Prison and/or North Corel could be the "rags", although this could also refer to a number of other locales or situations.
"As a champion / He stood against the rain."
PhoenixAsh has noted that, although it might make the riddle more difficult, the fourth line can be stated more accurately as "He stood against the elements." While one could take this to refer to Fire, Ice, Lightning, and the like, the previous use of "rain" (which is said to be easier, anyway) suggests that "elements" simply refers to climatological conditions (rain, wind, snow, whatever). In any case, the character in question, as a champion of some sort, stood against said elements.
"As a failure / All he could do was wipe his tears."
These lines suggest one of two things. The first is that neither success nor failure is guaranteed; one or the other could happen. This could play to a Battle Square reading of the riddle. Alternatively, the champion/failure references could suggest that the individual was successful at one point, and not successful at some other time. Wiping tears could be figurative, suggesting that our mystery character had no recourse to seek after failing. Taken literally, the line states that, having failed, the character was reduced to tears.
"But he was not a selfish man / He gave his gift away."
The character gave something away. This could really refer to any transition of an item or concept, although "not...selfish" and "gave" suggest that said gift was really given, as opposed to being part of a mutual transaction (which would discount someone like the Kalm traveller, who did receive the Guide Book, Earth Harp, and Desert Rose in return for his gifts).
Also, note that the pronoun "he" was used throughout the riddle. The character in question is male, although the gender of the answer is obviously dependent upon this central character.
I'm not sure how to put this together, though, since my reading is leading me back to Dio. It could, I suppose, refer to the buggy, or a number of other Gold Saucer prizes, as opposed to the Keystone, but I think PhoenixAsh would have suggested that the Keystone guess was close if this were the case. For the sake of putting forward a guess, I'll say the kidin the Sector 6 Slums, giving the Turbo Ether to Cloud, although I don't really have any confidence in it.

From rags to riches he went, (North Corel to Gold Saucer)
To what could hold the cup of Midas. (What else would you use to hold Midas' cup BUT a gold saucer? Man I crack myself up :D )
As a champion,
He stood against the rain. (These refer to winning the Parasol in the Speed Square)
As a failure,
All he could do was wipe his tears. (This refers to getting a Tissue for losing)
But he was not a selfish man,
He gave his gift away. (All the lines point to the Gold Saucer and it's prizes, if you've got this far then the only 'gift' this riddle talks about is the Parasol, which is given to AERIS)
So yeah, Aeris is the answer, once you cracked the Gold Saucer hints, I didn't think that would be much of a problem... Oh well, guess I need to keep toning down :P .
