Could you change the word filter to insert characters like **** instead of deleting words outright? Taking words completely out of sentences and not replacing them with anything is confusing me.

Skulls or charactesr or whatever, any kind of replacement is better than sentences like "I ing hate this ing ."

Leeza

The skulls were too pretty and I'm sure that a lot of people here swore on purpose just to see those skulls. They also thought that it was okay to say what they wanted to because we <i>would</i> see the skulls instead of what we all know that they actually say. And because it was already supposedly filtered out, I would get chastised for telling people to watch their language.

All I wanted was to get rid of the filter, period, so that I <i>could</i> tell people to watch their language and maybe ban a few people...I haven't done that in a long, long time *sigh*...but someone other than me has thought up this idea. :) I actually like it because, like someone else has said, now people just end up looking silly and like they don't know how to type when they try to swear. Yes, it does screw up the sentences somewhat, but, in my opinion this is the best solution other than not having any swear filter at all. Having **** won't make anyone try to find better words to use because they'll just keep claiming that it's filtered out so what's the big ing deal!

Of course people are starting to go around the swear filter already. I even played around with it myself in Staff for a bit and I can see where that could be fun for some people, but I think that we can come up with better words to use. There are also the ads now that we have to think about and I think that 99% of posts don't need these unnecessary words.

Endless
02-10-2004, 05:54 PM
The thing is, the more you try to prevent people to do something, the more imagination they use to work around it. Let's take the word "****" (the s-word).

Some will try to write it plain:
" " and it looks silly

Some will use stars:
"s*it"
"sh*t" (the most common over the web, I think)
"s**t"
etc...
There's always :skull::skull::skull::skull: or any variations thereof.

Or smartasses (:E) will trick the filter:
"Sh<randomtag></randomtag>it", said the word filter. "I'm tricked".

So, to make it short, I agree with Unne.
xD

Bulldog
02-10-2004, 06:10 PM
I can't even write "Calimsh<randomtag></randomtag>ite". That's bad.

Leeza
02-10-2004, 06:10 PM
If people really feel the need to go around the swear filter because they don't want to think of anything better to say, they can find MB's where it's perfectly okay to do so and I won't object to whatever they do there. At this MB, while <i>no-profanity</i> is still one of the rules, they will get a warning from me for going around the swear filter. If I have to give too many warnings to the same person over and over I will get very upset.

Del Murder
02-10-2004, 06:16 PM

Endless

(I just realized the filter prevents the word from being stored, just puts it as spaces.)

Look, I don't have anything against the swear filter. I don't even cuss, save maybe for three words (crap [forgot that one?], f-word, s-word) which I use scarcely and only in valid contexts. What I find silly, and that Unne found "confusing", is how it's configured to show only one space.
If we're not allowed to disagree with that, might aswell ban the word "feedback".

The Man
02-10-2004, 06:37 PM
For the record, I agree with Endless. Anything would be better than a single space replacing all the swear words. I don't care if they get replaced with "&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;" instead of "", but it's just plain ugly and disorienting the way it is now.

Citizen Bleys

Leeza

If people wouldn't swear, there wouldn't be any distorting spaces. :)

<i>If we're not allowed to disagree with that, might aswell ban the word "feedback".</i> - Endless

Where did I say that you couldn't disagree? Sorry if I worded something that gave that impression. You can disagree all you want. :)

Dr Unne
02-10-2004, 08:45 PM
I think **** still sends the message that we don't allow swearing, and it also allows me to keep my sanity. If people wouldn't swear, we wouldn't need the filter, yeah, but people do swear, and even though their posts are being turned into gibberish, the avid swearers don't even seem to notice. If they cared about not sounding like an idiot, they wouldn't be swearing in the first place. Disappearing words is only hurting those of us who attempt to read these posts, not the people who are posting them.

I don't know that you can turn the filter into multiple spaces, such as 4 spaces for a 4-letter swear word. Multiple spaces are contracted into one space by HTML unless you use an escape code. That's why I suggested ****.

Del Murder
02-10-2004, 08:46 PM
It is multiple spaces, from what I see, and it does excatly what you say. So that's out.

Well I still like this new filter because this way the profanity is less noticable when you first look at the screen, but I really can't take credit for it. All I did was voice my opinions.

I really don't mind having skulls or **** though as long as I don't get chastised for asking people to watch their language because, regardless of what shows up on the screen, they are still using profanity instead of thinking of something better to say. Yes, I agree that there is a place for it in some posts, but those are rare, in my opinion.

There are ways around your so-called filters. For example using two sets of italics or bold in order to merge two sets of letters 'sh' and 'oot' together would get shoot. So swear filters just don't work if you know what to do.

There's nothing wrong with removing the word altogether. I just don't like the idea that replacing the word with nothing causes problems with reading.

"I ing love to you in the ." Doesn't really make any sense. It's annoying to read. Now "I &nbsping love to &nbsp you in the &nbsp." is better, but whatever.

I like the idea of replacing swear words with smilies. However instead of multiple smilies just replace them with one:

"I :Ding love to :D you in the :D"

screw it.

02-10-2004, 11:15 PM

actually, that's true. ffwa's help forum closes all suggestion threads after they get a response from admins. it also closes all help threads after the problem is "answered." you're supposed to pm a mod to reopen it if you want to add to the thread. no one ever does it. it's a load of bollocks i say. the spam you get for leaving threads open is vastly preferable to the empty void you get when threads remain closed. ;_;

Del Murder
02-13-2004, 09:51 PM
We should filter it to 'I'm a loser' or 'my breath stinks' or something like that. That's what we should do. How about 'I love' for the f-word so we get things like this:

I love that Dr Unne. That I'm a loserhead can eat my I'm a loser. I love him! I love all of you!

Dr Unne
02-13-2004, 10:07 PM
On my extremely short-lived MB, I used word replacements to change swear words to phrases I imagine people would find incredibly lame and probably wouldn't want to have popping up in their posts. Why the FIDDLESTICKS don't you do that instead. That'd be better than some SQUIRRELy filter that removes all the DAGNABBIT words entirely.

ok in all seriousness

i think when people type obscenities in their posts and get it replaced with **** it tells them "hmm yeah that doesnt look very good, i just won't swear in my posts in the future." if it's replaced by :skull::skull::skull::skull: then they go "WOW :skull::skull::skull::skull:ING AWESOME I'LL SWEAR ALL THE :skull::skull::skull::skull:ING TIME." but **** looks lame. and it makes it obvious that there was something there to begin with. whereas with you have no clue anything was there.

at the very least, i'd like to have it all replaced by &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; or ____ so you can TELL that something was there

but bleh, it looks as if you guys are already decided on the issue. it just seems to me that if someone sees **** they'll realise that they're not supposed to use that language anyway.
