Joel: Zonealarm is free, but when the TrueVector service it installs eventually dies and gobbles up 100% CPU cycles, don't say you weren't warned of a system reinstall being imminent :D

Text editing, basically for coding with web languages and whatnot.
Ripping/encoding: Taking music from your CDs and putting it on your PC, changing types/compression of music files, etc...
File Archiving: Ever used a Zip file? Those are archives. They compress the size of the files and make them better for transfering. Most downloads on the internet come in .zip format, but many also come in .rar, so having WinRAR instead of just WinZip is good because it can handle .rar and .zip types.

Ever recieve a pop-up or a flash ad? Ever have so many windows on your taskbar that you couldn't tell between them all?

There are many, many, many browsers out there better than IE that improve on these main points, and others. And of course there are many more secure browsers out there. Settling for IE is like riding a bike just because it's in your driveway, when there's a BMW in your garage with the keys in it.

If you want an easy change from IE, switch to Avant Browser. It's basically a modification for IE, which has the same layout, and will have the same favorites/cookies/etc... of your IE browser, but is also much more customizeable, and will block popups, ads, flash banners, etc... And, it makes multiple tabs of windows inside your browser, instead of flooding your taskbar.

Of course, that's only if you want an easy switch from IE. I prefer Opera. Many also prefer Mozilla Fire(insert word here).
