OE -> Thunderbird conversion

I want to convert from Outlook Express to Mozilla Thunderbird for email, but is there a way I can transfer all my stored email messages between the two? I've had bad luck with such a transfer in the past.

Also, is Mozilla Firefox or Mozilla 1.6 better for a browser?
