So I just got through reading this play (for amusement purposes - it was recommended to me by some people who believed one of my short stories had Beckett-ian influences, but I had never read the guy before).

My initial response is perhaps similar to my initial response to my short story - "What the hell?" :D I understand what Beckett is emphasizing, but I don't know how to feel about Godot (God). Should I feel hopeful that he will come, or should I despair that he will never come? On one hand we have the increasing absurdity, circularity, and repetition to depress us, and on the other hand we have hopefulness that he will come, symbolized by the small change in the tree's leaves.

What do you guys think about this point? Or the play in general?

i love that play. I don't feel it needs a response, though.

You have to remember that Beckett was an existentialist. The way I read it was, regardless of whether or not God comes, it doesn't really matter. We're gonna keep waiting around because we have nothing better to do.

The play is awesome, and even more brilliant when performed

Maybe Godot needed to believe in himself first before he could show his face.

Perhaps, but I don't see why, when it was fairly obvious that he was all Gogo and Didi were waiting round for.

Well maybe Godot's just an idiot then.

I preferred "Waiting for Guffman."
