View Full Version : A discussion of all things "-eh"

I've noticed a lot of people seem to have a healthy fascination with using words that end in "-eh". You've all seem them, and you know who you are, you zany individuals!

Meh. Feh. Bleh. Leh. Where'd they come from, I wonder? Aren't they all really just one and the same? I personally assume that something like "meh" is taken to mean "whateva", and while a word like "bleh" might be defined as "ugh", couldn't *that* also be defined as "whateva" in a tone of disgust?

I took it upon myself to create a new "-eh" word: Xeh. Yeah. Xeh. Take the following examples:

I go back and capitalize or add puncutation alot. Meh. Give me money.

I go back and capitalize or add puncutation alot. Xeh. Give me money.

Am I onto something? I'm onto something, I know it. Discuss.

And while you're at it, start using "xeh" in your vocabulary. Thanks, and have a good day.

Meh fits when pronounced. Meh sounds like someone is showing disdain.

You spelled punctuation wrong and used 'alot' in the wrong context.

Xeh.

Isn't "xeh" what chocobos said?

Kweh!

And "xeh" just doesn't sound right.

Xeh.That was actually King Bahamut from another thread here in General Chat. I don't use "meh" myself, so I had to find another example. Trust me, I'd never spell anything wrong.

Oh, yeah, forgot about "kweh".

And "xeh" is pronounced "zeh", like "xenon" or "xenophobia". Yeah. Just so the masses know!

I don't like X. It doesn't have it's own sound :p Why not just call it zeh? Besides, "meh" really does sound like it's meaning :)

Bleh, Meh, Geh, Heh, Xeh. Xeh is the odd one out, it somehow requires more effort and takes away the helpless feel of it all.

Oh, come on now, it doesn't take any more effort to say "xeh" than "meh" or "feh". It's all the same amount of letters.

I got meh from the Spimpsons, not from the internet. But the internet probably got it from the Simpsons too at one point. Once I saw how many people used it I realized what a dorky word it was and stopped.

Xeh can be used to express question, like something wierd just happens and you respond 'Xeh??'

Hmmmm. . . You might be onto something.

Linguistics say otherwise! You should move your tongue a lot more when saying "xeh".

EDIT: In fact, when saying meh, you don't really have to move your tongue at all. :) Accents might change how much effort it is for different people, mind you.

You should move your mouth a fair amount to say anything that ends in "-eh". Is there really that much of a difference in pursing your lips together to make an "M" sound and putting your tongue behind your bottom teeth to make a "Z" sound?

Loony BoB

"Meh" is a word that symbolises a lack of effort - the amount of thought and energy involved with moving your tongue is far more noticeable than that of moving your jaw.

You're telling me that you actually read out loud/whisper to yourself when you read stuff like "meh" and "xeh"?

I say "meh" sometimes. I'm pretty sure that episode of The Simpsons is from the latter part of the 90's, so it'd be hard to find out where it originated from.

95% of the things I type are pretty much what I'd say in the given situation. I'm a firm believer that at least half of the arguments that begin online start from someone misreading what you type, the expression and all that... so it's important (to me) to type out stuff as close as possible to what I'd say in person. Or something. Yeah. I'm weird, but at least everyone who's met me in person hasn't seen much difference :D?

Well, I mean, when you're reading someone else's posts, you'd say "meh" and "xeh" to yourself, and that there's a huge differece which makes my newfound vocabulary builder undesirable?

It's Xenogears and Fei.

I think words that end with "-ei" aren't very good.

If I was to say anything, it would be meh, definitely. It's the sound of the word that just oozes of "whatever" and "blah" and "I don't give a crap" and all that stuff. Xeh reminds me too much of "zesty". If "meh" wasn't the superior version of all those kind of words, it wouldn't be used by so many people. It just sounds right. It feels right.

So, I guess, to summarise and answer your question: Yeah. =x

I really am lazy. Hell, I attached a rope to my toilet so I don't have to walk to the toilet anymore. (it's only about 20 feet from my bed to toilet, and I have hardwood floors). Meh.
