My friends and I have argued religiously about this... Is it a Ko-ko-bo, or a Cho-ko-bo.... with the "ch" sounded like it does in in the word church. I always thought it was with Ch prounounced like in the word Christ... just cause the other way sounds cheesy. We also argue aobut how to pronounce Ramuh, Ragnarok, etc etc etc

I've always pronounced it 'cho-ko-bo'.

Rostum

It is "Cho-ko-bo", it even says it in FFX.

HOOTERS

Actually it's cho-ko-mo-bo.

Actually it's cho-ko-mo-bo.

It's Cho-ko-bo. Always has and always will be... At least that's what I hope :)

Skogs
04-15-2004, 12:47 PM
I always thought it was o was a short o (like in stock or flock), rather than a long one (like in bone or phone). In FFX it's pronounced with a long o, though. I guess that decides it. :rolleyes2

Yeh I thought that Skogs, I really dislike the way FFX says it.

Oh man! I hate that. It sounds so corny!

DJZen

It also tells you how to pronounce it in FFVIII and even before then there's a vocal sample of the word in "Techno De Chocobo", the Chocobo riding theme from FFVI. I'm guessing that the translitterated version looks like "chokkobo".

Choco-bo. Two short, one long. It was crushing to find out that it wasn't true. ;_;

Rostum
04-18-2004, 12:58 PM
I used to pronounce it the way FFX says it, so I guess it doesn't bother me that much.

TheAbominatrix

I always pronounce it as 'Co-co-bo', even though I've always been aware that it's incorrect. I just like the way it sounds like that.

Rostum
04-18-2004, 01:03 PM
It's kind of like with the pronounciation of Tidus. Techincally it's pronounced "Tee-dus" but alot of people still like it as "Tie-dus".

Sefie1999AD
04-18-2004, 02:27 PM
I pronounce it like cho-koh-boh, with 'cho' like in the word 'chocolate'. About the plural form of Chocobo, I always thought it was Chocoboes, but FFX and FFX-2 seem to spell it Chocobos.

PhoenixAsh
04-18-2004, 03:44 PM
I hate the way you're meant to say Tidus. I mean the game revolves around water, Tide-us makes sense! Tee-dus just...ugh.

I think I actually pronounce chocobo strangely, like chuh-kobbo.

So how do you all pronounce other things? Like Tifa, Sephiroth, Yuffie and Nanaki?

Del Murder
04-18-2004, 05:30 PM
'Yoofie' is how they say it in KH so I guess it is correct, even though, like 'Tideus', 'Yuhffie' seems more obvious. I just say them how I want since it's not like the game developers are going to come beat me up over it (I could probably take em regardless). So...

'Tee-fa'
'Sef-ih-roth'
'Naw-naw-kee'

Rostum
04-18-2004, 11:53 PM
I pronounce Tifa as "Tee-fa", Sephiroth as "Sef-ee-roth", Yuffie as "Yoo-fy", and Nanaki as "Nana-key". Yup.

PhoenixAsh
04-19-2004, 12:11 AM
Naw-naw-ki? Never thought of pronouncing it like that. I always used nana-key as well, though I'm starting to think nana-kye (as in sky, buy, die etc) might sound cooler.

ShadyMilkman
04-19-2004, 01:29 AM
What about Zidane and Quina from FFIX? Do you put the stress of Zidane on the first or second syllable? And do you make the "I" long or short? And Quina.... is it Kee-na, or literally Kwi-nah. I always thought short I in Zidane with stress on the Dane part. and Kee-nah for Quina. I never pronounced Tifa Tee-fa... I always pronounced the I like in "Tiffany" Sephiroth was always Sef-uh-roth, adn Nanaki naw-naw-kee. Now the real question, how do you pronounce cloud???? hmmm.....

Quistis = kwiss-tus
Rydia = rye-dee-ah
Aeris = ehr-is (kinda like "heiress")
Sephiroth = seff-err-oth
Red XIII = nah-nah-kee
Zidane = zih-dayne
Chocobo = choh-coh-boh
Barret = bare-it :D

oo this is fun ^_^

other names i'm somewhat confused on...IRVINE, SEIFER

in cartoons i've heard Irvine as "Err - vine" as in vines...but that sounds so dumb! i always see it as "Err - vin" like the american name.

and seifer, i pronounce as "Sye - fer" like in the word 'scythe"

Other names:
Seph = Sef - err - awth
Tidus = Tide - us
Tifa = Tee - fuh (though tif-uh sounds pretty ^^)
Zidane = Zid - ayne
Quina = Key - nah
Quistis = Kwi - stis (though key-stis sounds cooler ^^)
Nanaki = Nah - nah - key
Aeris = Air - is (though it would sound nice as Aye-ris too)

Ragnarok = Rag - nah - rock
Ramuh = Rah - muh

And how do you guys prounce "esuna"?
I say it as "E - sue - nuh" with a long E
my bro says it as "Eh - soon - ah"

Irvine and Laguna were named after two cities in Southern California, Irvine and Laguna Beach. Thus, the pronounciation of the cities is the same as the characters.

Irvine = urr-vine
Laguna = lah-goo-nuh

Others:

Bahamut = bah-hum-it
Seifer = see-fur

FFVIII:

Laguna = Lag-yoo-na, but Lag-oona (as in Laguna Seca, the legendary US raceway) is also OK.

Irvine = Er-vine.

Quistis = Kwis-tiss.

Edea - Ed-ee-ah (a tough one, not too clear).

Rinoa - Rin-oah ('oah' as in 'Noah').

Seifer - Cypher

Kiros - Kee-ros

FFVII:

Tifa - Tee-fa

Yuffie - Yoo-fie (although I always called her yuff-ee until learning of the KH pronunciation)

Sephiroth - Sef - ee - roth

Aeris - Eye-riss, or Ayer-iss (like Ayer's Rock)

Nanaki - Nan-aah-kee

And as it's already been mentioned...
Barret - Bare-It (thanks to Bleys. I always used to pronounce it 'Barret', but now there's no going back).

FFIX:

Zidane - Zid-ayne (rhymes with 'pain')

Quina - Kwee-nah

Kuja - Koo-ja

Brahne - Braan - uh (Germanic pronunciation of the final 'e').

Miscellaneous:

Chocobo - cho-ko-bo (I used to pronounce it as 'ko-ko-bo', but assigning the 'ko' sound to both 'cho' and 'co' seems wrong).

Bahamut - bah-ha-mut ('mut' is more like 'moot', here - a long 'u').

Ramuh - Raam-uh.

Esuna - Ez-yoo-na.

Cid - ksheeoilled.

Actually if Cid is named for the El Cid, the Legendary Spanish hero, then in Spanish it is either pronounced 'Theed' (Castilian) or 'Seed' (other dialects). Of course I say 'Sid'. :)

Here are a few names that i ponder over how to pronounce

Quetzacotl = Kwetz-a-cottle

Shiva= The Indians say She-vah, but i say Shy-va (makes more sense)

Aeris = I say Air-is but my friends say Air-ith

Auron= ? Dote no how i say it, i keep changing

Edea = All of my friends and I say E-dee-a but one kid keeps saying
E-da. What a fool, I mean why put another E if it wasn't used!! answer me that!!

Steiner= I say Sty-ner but some say Stee-ner

Also another little anecdote, in the original translation of FFV the main character was refered to as "Butz".....some time later when Square realized what it meant in english, they changed it.

my dad has thins strange way of pronouncing seifer, everyone i know pronounces it 'sef-ier' like the normal way, but he goes 'si-fer'.

Big D
06-09-2004, 08:18 AM
"Seifer" is a real name, and it's pronounced "sigh-fur". Just like "cypher"...
"Sefier" is adding an extra vowel sound where there wasn't one before, so in reality your dad's pretty right:D

But to be fair... it's a fictional name, and it's never spoken in the game, so it's hard to say that anyone's absolutely right or wrong.
