White Mage whacked BM with her hammer a couple of episodes ago, and the rest of the party is just now finding him.
Anyway, about the Fighter's Journal: I have but one thing to say:

Jeff K.

Jeff K. Without the spelling.
I got a definite Jeff K. vibe from the original Fighter Comics, but I didn't see it in Fighter's Journal entry. There were hardly any spelling mistakes, no pointless insults, no weird and misdirected anger, none of that Jeff K. stuff.
It was actually kind of sweet :) Especially the part about being best friends with Black Mage (OK, sweet but maybe kinda pathetic too).
But that's just me.

Yeah, the "BM is my best friend" part was a nice return to the original Fighter.

That's what makes Fighter funny. He's not exactly dumb. He's DENSE. No matter what BM would do, he will always think of BM as his best friend. :)

I don't know about you guys but I liked it better before all these weird side-things, like Fighter's journal or whatever. I wish they'd get on with the plot. It was much better in the beginning, just walking through the woods getting killed by an Ogre. Those were the days... *sigh*

Anyway, I agree, that we should keep on with the plot, but interesting different things keep it entertaining, and make it last longer in whole.

That as bad, if not worse, than "Would you like some fresh baked cookies?"

Free Sword. Free Experience. Free Gold. Free Evil Pies. Evil Princess Sara is pretty good at this. I'm sure the Light Warriors can take Garland, but I think Evil Princess Sara is going to prove to be far to great a threat. Unless White Mage and Black Belt bail them out.
Evil Princess Sara probably should have just said, Free Evil and left the pie part out entirely. WOuld have worked right away knowing Black Mage.

Kawaii Ryűkishi
01-16-2002, 08:13 PM
I dunno. The whole "Evil Princess Sara" bit deviates a little too much from FFI's plot for me to like, as does the fact that the Light Warriors that entertain us so aren't even the real Light Warriors (http://www.nuklearpower.com/comic/104.htm).
allkaiser
01-16-2002, 09:19 PM
Umm... 8-bit isn't suppossed to be the plot of FF1. It started out as just BM and Fighter in a forest, personally I think that was the best part.
Kawaii Ryűkishi
01-17-2002, 12:50 PM
With the kids becoming Light Warriors and going to defeat Garland, it's quite obvious that Brian is making an effort to follow FFI's plot. I don't think he's doing so well, that's all.

01-18-2002, 01:00 AM
I think you're taking it too literally. I read somewhere, or maybe it was that interview he did a while back, that Brian called it "8-Bit Theater" so that it wouldn't have an Final Fantasy title because he didn't really think of it as a Final Fantasy comic. It's just a comic that happens to use the Final Fantasy sprites because he found them one day.
and, to quote Brian from his very own FAQ...
Q: is it going to follow the original final fantasy storyline, and if so to what degree?
A: i think it's going to take place in basically the same kind of world as FF1 itself. and it will follow the storyline, insofar as there is one ("good guys, go beat the bad guy!"), but you'll only see the original story as being way in the background.

Red Mage: Did you see that?!
Black Mage: Garland is so hideously evil that he can afford to be nice to us before he kills us!
Fighter: He must be so powerful that not even the shiniest swords could save us now!
And Evil Princess Sara was worried that he would screw up. Sometimes I have to wonder, who is more incompitent, Garland or our heroes?

Heheeheee.. that was what I liked with Ep109. The two incompetent "groups" meeting for the first time. I used to wonder what Garland would have said to our heroes when they would first meet. I thought he would just welcome them in. :) Instead he offers them cookies and drinks. Now I'm wondering how Evil Princess Sara is going to destroy our heroes.

Eagle299

But, this time Black Mage isn't aiming at the wall, he's aiming at Garland. So unless Evil Princess Sara thought to cast a wall spell on him, Garland is toast.
Edit: I was wrong, Garland is not toast. But not because of the wall spell. Its probably for the best that Black Mage can only cast that spell once a day. Otherwise God only knows what his daily body count would be.

Knowing 8BT nowadays I can tell you that they'll get out of it cuz Garland mixed the acid badly, so it's a giant vat of healing potion. And please be light with the spoilers, or at least label them. It kinda ruins the humor of reading it if you know what's gunna happen.

I'm a huge fan of 8-bit theater, but, let's face it, he needs to move things along at least twice as fast as he is currently doing.
It's funny, but right now it's just going much too slow to sustain any sort of narrative flow. My interest has kind of waned, but I know that I'm in the minority since Brian just had to switch servers to meet his needs.
I think I'd be a lot less impatient if I didn't know where this would all end.
BTW: Garland is dead. If you bring him back, Brian, I will launch nukes at Florida until one lands on Gainesville.

I'm guessing she's going to run around and help all their enemies. The Pirates, Lich, Karey, Kraken, Tiamat, are all getting lots of pointers about the Light Warriors weaknesses. And they'll never know that its her doing all of this till the end, she'll just be in nice girl mode everytime their around. Ofcourse, thats just my guess, I could be wrong.

That was weird in Thur's episode. He got within something like .001% of Avogadro's number, which is THE number in chemistry (like the speed of light in a vacuum in Physics). I emailed him and asked him if he did it on purpose, but he didn't. That's just weird.

Fighter is in love with Evil Princess Sara. You know she's going to exploit that later. Either that or remain totally oblivious to his feelings.
And opposits really must attract in 8-bit theater. Black Mage is madly in love with White Mage, a girl who detests evil in all forms, including him, and nice dumb guy Fighter has now fallen for evil genius Evil Princess Sara.

I used to like 8-Bit theater, but around the time when the four when to save princess Sara at Garland's castle, it just started getting too weird. Isn't Hadoken a street fighter attack, or something?
Kawaii Ryűkishi

It is indeed. The way a Black Mage holds out his hands when casting a spell is very similar to the form a person supposedly takes when throwing a hadoken in the Street Fighter series, so Brian made the connection and started having BM casting a hadoken spell. If it is spelled using the kanji I think it does, "hadoken" translates to something along the lines of "surging technique." Most people to settle for translating it to "fireball," though, since that's basically what it is.

You know, with a comic with the star pure evil, and a comic with the star pure stupid, I think I shall start a comic. The main character shall be purely....insane! Hmm, but what lame arse sprites to base it on? Ah, Zelda! Link should be fine for an insane fellow. He runs into houses, breaks all their belongings, asks them about stuff, and leaves. He's not stupid though, because he has this amazing ability to solve amazingly complex engineering problems in any underground place he goes to, and can learn the contents of whole books instantly.

Predictable and inaccurate? Thief would be the elf prince, as he states several times that he doesn't want to go. It's called foreshadowing, hinting at upcoming events. The comic would become just plain nuts if crazy plot twists just happened. I also don't think Brian has had time to play through the game several times and get the plot down, I don't blame him for making it inaccurate. You have to trail off a bit if its going to be funny and entertain an audience that hasn't played the game.
Repititve and stupid? The plot has ALWAYS been stupid, its supposed to be. I don't think its very repetitive either. They went from a port to the middle of the ocean across a rocket-ship to the Elven kingdom, and are now preparing to leave for the Marsh Cave. The jokes are getting a bit repetitive but he has to develop the plot, and the Elven kingdom isn't very exciting. After they get out, there will be more opportunities for jokes.
All they do is yak? Its the ramblings of the characters, like Black Mage's recently, that makes it funny. Brian's massive vocabulary allows him to use adjectives in a way I never thought possible, which just adds to the laughter. Black Mage's rant about how he is superior all leads up to him being told by the ninjas without him even saying a word.
I still find it funny. I'm pretty sure things will pick up once they hit the Marsh Caves.

Of course.
Brian has said a few times before that he's not at all trying to copy the plot/story, but that it's supposed to be "loosely", as i believe he put it, on the plot. I also think he said that in the FAQ

All they do is yak? Its the ramblings of the characters, like Black Mage's recently, that makes it funny.
Perhaps to those who like to hold cocktail parties tittering about dénouement, juxtaposition and dipthongs. Really, all of the characters speak exactly the same.
I'm pretty sure things will pick up...
I've been hoping for that for a while.

I really like how long it took to set up and reveal Astos, and now that he's been introduced, he'll actually last for a while. Along with Bikke, he's all set up to join Garland in a more inclusive evil alliance than is found in the game. Nice.

I wish they would've spent more time on the whole Marsh Cave thing. They didn't even fight any Wizards did they?

Well I talk about it almost every day and I make sure I'm awais up to date with the new comics. Of course only one person here on EOFF would know that. So yes I love 8-bit Theater.

I thought it was awfully obvious that Astos didn't really die and just made a deceptive retreat.

I actually liked the whole Lich battle. It was amusing to me. Then again I'm just easily amused.

It's always amazed me how Brian has been able to fit his ludicrous story into the FF1 plot.
