Well that's the point xD
He was the original Keyblade master but he was easily swaued by Darkness so, that's why Sora was picked instead of him. He's not intentionally evil, he just met the wrong people at a time where he needed alot of help and they took advantage of his wary nature. He became tainted when Sora didn't seem to want him around, only because of Maleficient he became evil. She gave him the power he needed to 'help' Kairi but Ansem took over his heart :/ crappy deal for him.
I still like Riku, I feel bad for him :/

I had times i loved him and times i hated him. At the island i liked his additude, but i hated it when it came to the race bit and when you are frighting him with the wooden swords. He was quite a jerk to poor sora, though it claims they are best friends...
unmaked spoilers
I did like him when he poped up in travers town. I felt kinda sorry for him( more so then i did sora when he was alone there). And when he found Karia and you knew he was being played with (like a puppet...hm..) I really wanted nothing more then for him to stab maleficent and steal karia away and forget about sora and live all happy like again.
As far as him having a girls name, i belive Rikku from X has a guys name, for i played KH before i played X...I guess it just depends on your perspetive. Maybe one k means the names masculin

Riku was one of the better 'friend/rivals'.
Riku was a great character. My eyes actually welled up a bit at the end.

He said to Sora, "Take care of her."
And in regards that he has a girls name, for one: His name is Riku, not Rikku. And secondly: Rikku's name is actually supposed to be Ryukku. Riku's name did not change from the original Japanese version.
This clears everything up.

I kinda like Riku, actually. =P He has a lot of different sides to him, being strong/weak, caring/uncaring, etc... the story wouldn't have been as interesting without him. *nod*

I felt so bad for Riku, He tried so hard to save Kairi its just that nothing worked. Also he was being munipulated by that witch. I don't believe that he ever really enjoyed fighting Sora, but he was told that he had to in order to save Kairi's heart. Later he was possesed by Ansem, but was still not completely evil. He wouldn't let Ansem harm Kairi, even though he was possesed he fought him off so that she could escape. He is a classic example of a Tradgic Hero. He was good at the end too. I really like Riku. He was a little mysterious, which always makes the game more interesting. It wouldn't be Kingdom Hearts without Riku/

Riku was really cool! I liked him better than the disney characters, anyway. And what's wrong with being evil if you're cool about it? I mean, he wasn't really 'EVIL' evil, he was just trying to save Kairi and stuff. But I'm not commenting on the ending, 'cause I haven't finished it :D .

Hrm... You know, it's a toughie...
He's not out-and-out an evil character, it's just that he was weak against the darkness and it overcame his heart. And he's a much better villain than was Seymour in FFX.
But you know, I never really warmed to Riku. If the rumors are true that he has a bigger role in KH2, I'm not sure I'd be looking forward to that. He's probably one of my least favourite characters in the game, but I don't dislike him.
As for his name... Well... Rikku's name was a translation from a different name in Japanese, whereas Riku has always been Riku, as pointed out already. But even still, you can have unisex names, like Sam, Ashley, or Robin, so I don't really think the name makes a difference.
All in all, I'm not really sure when it comes to Riku. All right guy, I guess, but my least favourite.
I had thought about naming my future son Ashley, but I don't know...these days it's predominately a females name. I wouldn't want to give a name that would result in teasing and all that. What do you all think?

:) thats fine, my (male) friends middle name is ashley, and my mate (male) at school, his name is ashley-but we call him schlef! :) but ashley is the male form of he name, ashliegh is the female form :) so it'd be ok. i thnk thats a fine name for your future son :)

Welllll.... for one, Riku was pretty annoying when Sora first met him.
But he became cooler and all when he supposedly fell into darkness....
I think that him and Kairi should have been there more offen in the game tho!

Japanese. My dictionary gives the translations for these words as "sky or weather" and "land". However, I find it amusing that blue midget would talk about Riku being a girl's name when Sora also happened to be the name of a female character from Digimon... :O_O:

Riku and Rikku mean two completely different things. Rikku means lick and Riku means ground
Strange that Rikku, the spunky cute girl from ffx and ffx-2 would be named "lick" dont ya think? Also Yuna is a name for women who help people bathe. :mog:

If you actually think about it, Sora couldn't have saved Kairi without Riku. For it was Riko who found Kairi's body after plunging into the depths of Ansem. The only "evil" Riku was Ansem controlling him.
Besides, Riku was a damn cool boss, and if Sora didn't have all those Curaga spells and potions, he would have been owned by the power of darkness.

The role Riku was given was to be mysterious somewhat. He was given a role where he was compelled by the dakrness and turned evil, that's just his role, theres nothing a weak heart can do about it. Sora had a strong heart and didn't fall like Riku.
Plus Riku is just so awesome. And dude you must be thinking Riku from FFX and FFX-2 because This Riku in the game is awesome.
Ouch!

Unmarked spoilers, beware.
Riku was hardly evil. He delved into darkness to save Kairi. He was so determined to help her that he sacrificed everything, eventually even his body, to the darkness. His rivalry with Sora only made him work harder, especially towards the end, to be the stronger of the two.
He was believable as well, as most of the characters in Kingdom Hearts were. Well, really only Riku and Sora were shown enough to grow as characters, but SE did a good job showing both their growth.
Honestly, Riku was my favorite character in Kingdom Hearts, and I hope he gets a larger role in Kingdom Hearts II as one of the unknowns. He didn't really shine through in Kingdom Hearts until the end. I would have liked to have seen a bit more of his side of the story.

Why was this even made a thread!!!
I can't believe there is an argument over this..... Riku Ruled!!! Okay so he was a little over confident at times but he was by far etter then most people in the game.
I mean he had one of the sweetest looking weapons, he was powerful enough to face the darkness and he even fought ansem while he was being possesed.
P.S. The Gunblade Fanatic Corporation does not mean to inflict any pressure on people and has no problem with other peoples personal choice

i agree with gf. Sure, Riku was a LITTLE der, but ya know, at least he is pretty realistic. we all have one of those friends. and yes, his weapon pwns. i really liked him... and i am not a riku fangirl, but i liked him because he was Sora's best friend, and because he reminds me of my own best friend, i guess...

Well, actually...
Riku was the one originally meant to wield the keyblade, which apparently goes to the one with the strongest heart. When Riku accepted the darkness, he was no longer qualified to wield it as he was "tainted," so it went to Sora--the next strongest.
I thought Riku was pretty damn cool. The whole "mature, responsible older best friend going over to the dark side" thing (which he only did to save Kairi, might I add) was pretty cool.
I also find it somewhat ironic that he wears primarily light colours (white, yellow) and has light hair and eyes while Sora is brownhaired and wears somewhat darker clothes.
