Though this site is devoted mainly to Square RPG's, and rightly so, what are some of your favorite non-Square RPG's?

Star Ocean 2, was fun for me. Made before the Square Enix merger, so I suppose that counts.

I also enjoyed Breath of Fire 2 on the SNES, made by Capcom.

Take care all.

I love the Dragon Quest/Warrior Series.

Dragon Quest/Warrior III is still one of my favorite RPGs.

I've honestly never played any of those games. Yes, I've led a sheltered life...

Take care all.

Tales of Phantasia, you ignorant philistines. Brilliant story, characters you can get attached to, time travel, beautiful graphics, wonderful music and voice acting, all on the SNES. Plus, it's Namco, and since when are Namco really that famous for RPGs? Well, it's Wolf Team, who ran away to form Tri-Ace and make the Star Ocean games for Enix, so, eh.

Though, admittedly, I do actually own Lunar and Lunar 2 Complete box sets and all, and I don't own ToP, so it should count for something. And I do desperately wish for either a new Lunar game, or some way to get Lunar Magic School.

Oh, and Grandia, probably the first more than the second.

EDIT : Oh god, how could I forget, the Wild ARMs series too, though I've only played Wild ARMs and Wild ARMs 3, they are one of the few games that I've completely completed. I got absolutely everything in Wild ARMs, and almost everything in Wild ARMs 3, I never finished the Abyss, which was a shame.

Xenosaga, hands down, even though it's practically a Square game. I really liked the original Golden Sun too, but I still haven't gotten around to playing the sequel.

As soon as I saw this thread I thought Star Ocean and Breath of Fire II.

I have nothing left to say...

I can't beleive I'm the only one that said "Suikoden 2."

Tales of Phantasia. There's nothing cuter than hearing Arche cry out, "Indignation" followed by the explosion of Bugbears. Die, wretched brown things!

I never finished Star Ocean 2, got right to the end and got consistently mullered by the boss.

Shadow Hearts is my favourite by a mile! In fact it beats FFIX for me, god I hated FFIX. Shadow Hearts 2 is coming out...yay for Midway.

ok I have to say the following list are all great games in the non square RPG area of the market:

~ Any of the forgotten realms games based on the D&D system - Baulders Gate, diablo, icewind dale, never winter nights.

~ The Fallout games, sheer brilliance and addiction qualities.

~ Morrow wind, under estimated but can be quite good fun

~ Shenmue 1 & 2 on dreamcast

~ Grandia 1 not 2, 2 sucked really

~ Jade cocoon 1 & 2, good cross between pokemon and other traditional RPG elements the second is a little kiddy for my liking and thank god the puzzles don't rely on sound I had to mute the tv to play them still gotta love my mp3 collection.

~ Legends of dragoon, so called "Sony's answer to FF" developed whilst the future of square hung in the balance it failed in many areas but no more than grandia failed in the fact that they could have had a much better graphics engine

~ Star ocean the second story, only played around 30 mins of this but seemed enjoyable

Wow, how could I forget the Fallout games? I guess Fallout 2 is my favorite non-Square RPG, Tales of Phantasia second.

Xenosaga and Legend of Dragoon!

Legend of Dragoon wasnt as satisfying as a good play of FF VII. The story was good(( woulda been better if i had not read all the spoilers i could soak up)) and the playing style i loved(( having to hand chop everything:P )). It still kicked

I always liked Legend of Zelda...but is it concidered an RPG?

Ultima 7 and 7.5.

Dues Ex, if you count it as an RPG, which you should.

You mean Deus Ex, and yes, it is an RPG, and yes, it is quite probably the closest you can get to a perfect game.
