Which artists now (movies, music, books) do you consider to be underrated? Use your own discretion and discuss.

Music - Soilwork, Massive Attack, Portishead, In Flames, VNV Nation, and VAST. I have yet to hear any of their songs... anywhere. Which sucks, considering all 6 of them are some of my favorite bands ever.

Most old school rap and some new rap. A lot of people who dont like rap r so quick to say it sux but just about all old school rap took time and effort, cuz they didnt have all the beats and sythesizers we have today, and they could accualy sing.

in a seemingly paradoxical way, Evanescence are very underrated. u may scream they r really famous and popular and were everywhere.

in my opinion they are either mostly liked by teenie boppers going through a phase or hated for being *pop rock* or *sellouts* or *linkin park wannabees* or*lucana coil/night wish etc rip offs*.

imho most who like it dont appreciate the music, just mindless singing bring me to life and then moving on to slip knot or avril of westlife or some over crap. most who hate it judge sorely on bring me to life and dismiss it as popular pretensious rubbish. if u listerned to bring me to life properly u would see its a very good song. further if u listerned to the rest of the albulm u would see its nothing like linkin park, far more emotive then lacuna coil and a complete diff style to nightwish.

i love classical music and this fusion of classical and metal is immense. they may not be heavy...so? i wish more then a handful of ppl would appreciate how good my immortal, hello, imaginary, my last breath and there demo stuff anywhere, lies, fields of innocence, ascension of the spirit, solitude and understanding are. it may not suit u but u can at least admit its quality. i,m not into offspring, eminem, coldplay, beatles etc etc but at least i can admit there is quality in the music as opposed to dismissing it as crap.

anyway i lost my real point but Evanescence are my fav band. metallica, mortis, archenemy, nightwish, cradle of filth, linkin park are among my other favs. some heavy, some not, but all quality. i wish so called "metal fans" would realise there is more to music then technical ability. i,m not talking about stuiped ppl here, i,m talking about intellegent ppl, many of my friends included, who despise evanescence because iron maiden or metallica are better with the instruements. true they are, but imho the atmosphere creates is unparelleled, far more touching then any genius metallica guitar solo could ever be. even if they disagree, i wish they would show respect for evanescence.

I'm glad someone agrees with me. :)

I think talent is underrated these days. Yes, Amy Lee dresses gothic and some people may not like that, but listen to her sing. She sound amazing. Yeah, Avril Lavigne may dress "punk", but she has no talent.

I think A Perfect Circle and Amy Lee as a singer (Evanscence isn't really underrated, but Amy is) are underrated.

I wish people would stop judging artists and singers by their clothing and their appearance, and judge them by their talent. If that was how things ran, I can assure you there would be quite a few famous artists that wouldn't be making CDs.

"I wish people would stop judging artists and singers by their clothing and their appearance, and judge them by their talent. If that was how things ran, I can assure you there would be quite a few famous artists that wouldn't be making CDs."

Too true, too true.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this, but I'd consider Johnny Depp to be the most underrated actor of modern times. I used to lump Sean Penn in that category as well, but he finally won a major award. Well, so did Depp as he got the SAG award, but people still seem to look past Johnny in favor of people like Vin Diesel, All those teeny-boopers who make the same film over and over again, though Saved! looks good, and as much as it pains me to say this, Bill Murray or people who now act strictly for a paycheck. I don't think anyone will be able to convince me that Garfield The Movie has some deep redeemable value.

All in all, I'd consider Depp, Billy Crudup, Don Cheadle, and to some degree Hugh Jackman, who still hasn't found a movie great enough for his real talent, to be among the most underrated actors/artists out there. As for actresses, I'd probably say the young woman from Six Feet Under, Lauren Ambrose. That show itself is very underrated, and I feel it is actually much better than what The Sopranos has become.

Take care all.

Of course theres always going to be something thats under-rated, there always is. Theres so much talent and creativity out there, just think about it, 6 trillion (or what ever) people in the world today. But has anyone ever thought to listen to and give credit to the artists and writers near and around them? Pop into the Art and Writing Forum, there are some very good artists, stories and songs there. /EndUseless Rant

I dunno, there are alot of under rated people, but as long as I like it I'm not too caring what other people think...

The song that got me into Dream Theater  Still one of my favorite DT songs... and it kicks the crap out of any of the heavy stuff on Train of Thought (not to say they're all bad songs, but ToT is just nowhere near the level of the last album).

"Crawling to my glass prison
A place where no one knows
My secret lonely world begins

So much safer here
A place where I can go
To forget about my daily sins

Life here in my glass prison
A place I once called home
Fall in nocturnal bliss again

Chasing a long lost friend
I no longer can control
Just waiting for this hopelessness to end..."

Felldoh, Portishead really makes spectacular music. i've never heard a band to make melancholy so suave. i'd agree they're underrated, but i don't think it's so bad that they're under the radar. As ideal as it is to stay neuteral about a group's popularity, there's something so much more personal about enjoying an amazing yet underground sort of band.

i think jim morrison and the doors are way underated.

i will fight tooth and nail to the grave in support of the claim that so long as the Doors have even a single lukewarm fan, they are painfully overrated.

Some people might not agree with me, but on music I'll say The Flaming Lips, and Pink Floyd. Too lazy to state my reasons behind this.

I agree with Rainecloud in that I thought FF:TSW was an underrated movie, it just bombed in the box office.

Pink Floyd

Maybe to the teeny-boppers of today, but otherwise, man! Pink Floyd is one of the highest-selling artists ever, and had 2 of the most-attended and msot expensive tours in history! (Momentary Lapse of Reason and Division Bell tours). "Dark Side of the Moon" and "The Wall" continue to sell millions to this day.
I'm of course a huge Floyd fan, just making sure you realise these truths about them ;)

Dream Theater.

This is proper music.

I'd hardly call a lot of Train of Thought... "proper" :p Though Stream of Consciousness is about as refined as they come.

Now... Awake, that's fine music to dine to a fine dinner to.

Maybe Awake without MIRROR or LIE. Eating a fine dinner would be a little awkard when that riff in Mirror comes on...:D

I really just meant proper as in its the proper music for this age. The younger generation could use a good listen. They're our future. What would happen to our future if not?

Well I suppose you're right. Yes, younger people still need to hear this, we older metalheads (older? I'm 16 o.0) shouldn't keep it from them :p
As my parting gift to this post, the best stanzas on that album:
"Maybe I'm just Cassandra fleeting
20th century icon bleeding
Willing to risk salvation
To escape from isolation

I'm witness to redemption
Heard you speak but never listened
Can you rid me of my secrets
Deliver us from darkness?"
