View Full Version : What is forum spam? And who can do it the best? And why?

I'm under the impression that spam is anything nonsensical. Saying 'I like bunnies' in a thread about ketchup isn't sensible. Starting a thread saying 'look at me liking is goats *throws melon at you cannon*' isn't sensible, or coherent.

However whenever I post such tripe in 'spam fora', the threads tend to get closed. Then I sit there at my computer area staring at the locked thread thinking "why is it closed? It's clearly spam'.

So is spam something else? If it is, what is the stuff I post on a regular basis if it isn't spam?

I'd say that starting a thread about ketchup in the first place would be pretty spammy.

Spam is generally useless to everyone. Whether it's useless in a fun way or not depends on the exact content. Sometimes the stupidity of a post can make it 'fun' spam. Other times, it just makes the poster look stupid. It's finding the right middle ground that's the key.

Peegee
05-27-2004, 05:34 PM
But why? Why must spam be interesting? Wouldn't that not be spam?

Cz
05-27-2004, 05:45 PM
Well, some types of spam e-mail are agreed by all to be just plain irritating (penis extensions, ludicrous offers etc..). However, some chain e-mails are considered spam by some, who see them as worthless, but as amusing by others, who have a genuine interest in the message.

I think that the same applies to these forums. Some might consider a One Word Story or ABC thread spam, as it doesn't appeal to them. Others might see it as a bit of fun, no matter how pointless it may seem, because they enjoy the comic relief that the thread provides.

Of course, I'm probably wrong, but that's my take on it.

Baloki

If I remember rightly Spam tried to sue the internet over that term xD

Cz
05-27-2004, 06:09 PM
Really? I wouldn't exactly call it bad publicity, so what reason would they have to sue?

Baloki

Imagine your product being assoisiated with annoying and tastless object, then imagine companies using your regestered trademark to describe it :D

Cz
05-27-2004, 06:28 PM
I'm sure that a number of people had never even heard of spam before they logged on to the internet. Now, the term is known worldwide.

Of course, there is a downside. If the food's popularity spreads, someone might actually eat it.

Baloki
05-27-2004, 06:36 PM

Apparently, schools in the 1950's and 60's used to serve spam a lot. That makes sense, since it was certainly cheap enough to buy in bulk.

What exactly is spam made of, anyway? I've never actually bought any, let alone looked at the ingreedients.

I quote my LJ "Spam is not a problem, it is an artform".

But it depends what type of spam. E-mail spam is stupid. But take the spam my esteemed (...ahem) colleague Misfit linked you to (Proto closed it, then soon after he was no longer a CK! I don't consider this coincidence!), or the name! thread. THAT my friends, is poetry in motion.

Word salad isn't the same as porn/penile implants ads, is it? I mean, a stupid pictures picpost is a normal thread, but 'let's talk about bunnies kicking kitties' isn't?

wtf, I claim fascism.

So if the content of the post is the same as spam, but is used in the right context, then it isn't spam? Is there such thing as non-spam for 'omglolwtfbbq'?

I find a great deal of general intolerance or hypocrisy when it comes to (any) moderators and what they think is spam :(

See, that is bad spam. Along with pretty much everything that happened in the b forum, however long ago that was. Pretty much just a bunch of little kids who thought they were getting away with something.
Spam is for smaller forums, but still needs to be stopped by the time too many morons come by and just ruin the fun for everyone.

Spam is unsolicited e-mail, often of a commercial nature, sent indiscriminately to multiple mailing lists, individuals, or newsgroups; junk e-mail.

Peegee
05-27-2004, 09:38 PM
Would double posting be considered spam? It's not intentional but the effects are very annoying. I've lobbied EoFF to institute a very simple 5-10 second spam limit to prevent double posts, but apparently they don't listen to me no matter how coherently I speak.

Yamaneko

If MAPS was any good it would be in the archive. MAPS was no good because it was only four people posting back and forth, double, triple, etc, posting.

Good spam is hard to come by and there hasn't been any good spam for a long time. A spam reform must be undertaken. Word Association, 1001 Reasons Why..., and others just don't work anymore.

If there's a best spammer award for the ciddies, it must be given to a person who hasn't been banned yet.
