View Full Version : Faster ways to level up?

Okay, I'm at level 12 currently ( a thief) and it's more frustrating than ever right now. I get only 12 - 25 exp from each kill, and I feel LUCKY if I get over 30.

Right now I'm killing Goblin weavers and thugs, wild sheeps, mouse bats and all those things that are near San D'orian ( like that King's tomb). I haven't went too far yet, though; farthest I've gone so far is that King's tomb's vault 2 where I first encountered wind bats, and even they kicked my ass easily when I tried them.

So, can you think of any monsters near San D'orian ( since I can't go to other cities yet, I guess) which I possible haven't encountered yet and which might be possible for me to kill? It'd be great if I could get something like 50exp/kill again. :\
It's VERY frustrating to spend time with somewhat durable sheeps, which only gives you 15exp.

If you can party with people that know what they're doing and fight enemies that are just over the consider "even" mark you can get experience chains from killing more than one enemy at that level in a preset amount of time.

Either way this is why parties become good after a while as they allow you to tackle harder enemies for more experience.

EXP chains are fun, and easy to do if you're facing linking monsters...

Make friends; join a linkshell. You'll have a hard time finding a party as a thief untill higher levels because you can't take or deal much damage. Having a friend will let you have a party despite not having much to offer in return. Your parties will pick up around level 15, they say, so that's something to look forward to. If you know a whm friend, you can ask to be powerlevelled - entailing the whm healing you while not in a pt with you, so that you can solo enemies way above your range.

Yeah, I decide to solo for a while since it'd be possible a long time-wasting wait no party guaranteed. :)

And yes, level 15 is something to look forward to indeed, because I'll get the sneak attack then and I've heard it's pretty good and will make my thief much stronger.

Before I created my thief, I read from somewhere that first 15 levels with a thief is 15 LEVELS OF HELL and now I have only 2 and a half levels of that hell left, so I just gotta bare with it. :)

Thing is, sometimes when it's slow, you feel like playing is VERY forced, meaning you play eventhough you HATE to play the game at the moment, but you do it because you just *have* to do it to make it more fun and you'll have to do it sooner or later anyway. That's my gaming hell, when it comes to MMORPG's. It's awful especially you're tired. :)

That's what I liked about Diablo II, almost no wait.

Yeah, I found that a thief was very boring at the early levels, so much so that I abandoned the class at level 11. I wanted to play with other people, and as no one wanted to play with a thief I gave up.

Funny, now that I'm a white mage I have no qualms with partying with a thief and having them act as a tank. Of course I'm not too high in levels so it works well.

Level 12?

It's time to go to Valkurm.

From West Ronfaure, go south to La Theine Plateau, then south again and you're in Valkurm.

Don't try to fight anything until you get a party. You *should* have a map of the area before you go in, because you'll need it to find your party.

What exactly are experience chains?

And I wish I could find a party. Gotta try that tomorrow. I really haven't tried to talk with anyone insie the game yet...what are the best places to look for party?

EXP chains are when you kill a even or higher checked monster, then kill another one even or higher, in a certain amount of time (it starts at 80 seconds for exp chain 1, after that it reduces by 20 I think every time till it's 20 per chain)

Thier pretty good to get your party maximum exp.

I advise to start with Toughs first to build TP, then chain up to 200 or so by the 2nd, then go to IT and fight them over and over and chain up to 5 and get 300exp max from em. Rest for a min or two, then repeat. A good static party can take you miles.

Go to Valkrum Mik or fight in LaTheine Plateau if you want a bigger challenge. Valkrum is hard and you'll most likely die lots if you party with idiots. make sure there's a whm or at least two redmages in the party for healing otherwise things will go from bad to worst in no time flat at that low level.

EDIT: Redmages should know Cure II by then anyways and Chainspell is their 2 hours, not as useful as Benediction but still, if their MP is still relatively decent, you should pull out with SOME hp. ^_^

EDIT 2: One rdm should concentrate on the tank to heal and the other sort of heal around. That's what I usually do and the party pulls out fine without a whm. Make sure you guys plan out the roles if there are no whm in the party so everyone is well aware of their positions and there's no misunderstanding. Try to grab a black mage if there is no whm O_O the rdm can concentrate on only healing then instead of enfeebling. *nods* Last edit I swear.

Yeah, no healer means instant death for the whole party.

Thief. I hate thief, but I love treasure hunter.

Eternalshiva being the kind hearted soul she is, is giving me a boost with her uber healing magic, while I fight stuff I could never take solo. =)

If i've learned anything about this game it's that there really is no fast way of leveling.

Mikztsu
06-08-2004, 01:30 PM
Yes, I do realize there's no way to level fast and it'd be lame if there was. I just needed tips to level fastER than this very slow pace I was having, and this topic has helped me a LOT. Thanks guys. :)

Also, I guess I hadn't read manual well enough first time. I just now realized that you can put "seeking party" as your status. I hope it's gonna help when I'm past level 15. Right now I'm few hundred exp from level 13, and my goal is to be at level 15 by the end of tomorrow. And I'm kinda enjoying playing right now.

Okay, so how do you look for parties? For example, if I wanna party and wanna go to Valkrum as Bleys suggested, should I go near walkrum with my status purple? And once more, thanks everyone. Its' great to have some mentoring around here.

I'd just go into Valkurm, right by the zone point, with your party seek flag up, and sit tight until you get an invitation to join a party. If you're at the zone point, and get aggro, you can just skip across the border. Once you get an invite, you can look at your map to see your party members (You might need to press menu left/right a few times after selecting markers on your map) and walk to them.

As a theif, you'll probably be expected to pull, so be sure to stock up on arrows.

Lol, try partying with em when they get Viper BIte and Trick Attack, the damage they do is so much you would never believe it. Simply your not that high level to see the potential of the job. I simply love THF.

I have partied with thief's with viper bite + trick attack ;p I realize the potential for the class, I just don't have the heart to level it past 15. ;)

Okay, I was surprised how much I got invitations today. When I put my flag up around Plateu and Valkurm, I immeadiately got an invitation and very fast leveled to 14. :) Some of the parties kinda sucked, so I died twice as well, so that's why I'm not on level 15 yet.

I seriously didn't have any problems to make it in parties, and I didn't even have to ask. This game just got many times better. :)

Edit: By the way, is it hard to get to other cities at this level? I don't actually even know where they are, heh. x) Also: I'm wearing brass armour and royal archer' sword at the moment; can I get something more up-to-date stuff from any shop ( any city) yet/soon?

Citizen Bleys
06-09-2004, 01:03 AM
You can easily get to almost any other city. If you want to go to Bastok, go south of Valkurm to Konnschtat Highlands, and then south to North Gustaberg (Bastok territory), south again to South Gustaberg, and then you can hit Bastok (it's not on the map, but follow the northern wall of South Gustaberg, skip the first exit towards N. Gusty, and you'll be in Bastok Markets.

To get to Windurst, take the boat in Selbina (Stay in the cargo hold during the trip), and that'll put you in Mhaura. Exit Mhaura into Buburimu Peninsula, and go south to Tahrongi Canyon. Exit south from Tahrongi to East Sarutabaruta, and you can find an entrance to Windurst Woods in the far south of East Sarutabaruta.

Don't even *try* to go to Jeuno until level 19, unless you have a high-level escort.

I can't believe I had never visited the auction house before! I have wasted so much money for crap before this. This auction house feature is godly, very handy and FUN.

...and before this, I have just sold my crystals to NPCs. x_X

You poor, poor man. No wonder you were having trouble making money.

Tell me about it. :\

Speaking of making money, today I guess I'll start my fishing hobby. I've heard it takes patience and time, but it can be very profitable. I've read some fishing guides. :)

and before this, I have just sold my crystals to NPCs.

That's what I did for a few days then I read about the auction house and then started rolling in money. :D

But fishing? I tried it for about a week, all I did was lose 2 rods and 2 dozen bait, and not once got any thing or even some skill level up. Of course then again I was also fishing randomly where ever I could, with whatever I had, but meh I think I'm just a impatient person.

Citizen Bleys

Try getting a non-cheap rod and some insect paste balls, and fish down at Knightwell in West Ronfaure. Not a bad place to start building your skill levels.

If you can afford it, a sabaki rig is godly, too.

Lionx
06-10-2004, 11:25 PM
Recommend just insect paste, with low fishing skill breaking your rod or losing your bait will so kill your wallet >< Just get bamboo, insect paste, and fish at fresh water areas, and not the salt water(port/ocean areas).

Speaking of leveling up again, Í realized that today I was first time in a good party. Everything worked so well, and during my time in that party I levelled from 15 to level 18. :) We killed snips and fireflys in Valkurm ( beach mostly) and we often got something like 190 exp/ kill.

It was great and I hope I'll be lucky enough to be in that good parties again. But most of all: as the party was good, I learned today in few hours more than I had learned that far. :) I'm fallin more and more love in this game as I learn it. Power of this game compared to for example in RO and PT, is how much more you need to learn things.

Only negative thing from today is, that I didn't get really anything to sell nor did I get money, so I can't upgrade my equpment at all. Maybe I'll go solo-killing some orcs to get shitloads of fire crystals tomorrow...

a good way now to get quick money, if you have your sub job option avaliable is go back to town, switch your main job to a new one like warrior or monk, keep you theif as your sub and focus on killing things that give you wind and fire crystals, probably bees and gobs. With your increased drop rate from the theif you can coin it quickly auctioning crystals.

Bahamut2000X
06-11-2004, 02:53 AM
You only get the increased drop rate from thief with treasure hunter skill at level 15. So you'll main will need to be 30 before having THF as a sub will give you treasure hunter.

Lionx

Exping and getting money does not usually come hand in hand, so you have to get money on your own time.

Parties at the moment arent going to be always that good, it seems you probably partied with some experienced players with new character, lvling another job or subjob. You can tell usually by the way they play and the rank they have. It usually gets worst then at lvl 30 the party you experienced today will prolly be more common. just another 10 or so lvls of idiotcy ^^;

Treasure Hunter affects all common drops, so you should lvl BLM to 30 and train tons and get lots of loot.

Most of them already had a sub, but main job wasn't higher than mine. Anyway, they knew what to do, strategies worked.

Today was an awesome day as well. I needed that skull and worm for my sub job, so I got 4 high level players to help me and someone else ( who needed items) out. At the first night, we got both skulls in first two ghouls fast and then the worm ( both in Valkurm). I simply love how some people can spend their time in helping like that + they gave me linkshell for free and pearled them. I didn't claim my sub today yet, since I had left that Crap-thing needed for sub in my safe, so I stayed to level up next level. Was in 3 parties today, and we got mostly 100xp/kill, which was fine.

It seems that my role is to be a pull mostly, which is fine; I've learned the role well and my evasion rate has increased a lot 'coz of running :P Running all the time can be tireing, but thankly some people would pull for me every now and then. I remember when it was kinda awkward in the beginning for me in parties when I didn't know much what to do and had to be asking, but now I've learned things. Again, partying and playing with experienced players is very valuable experience for everyone. Now I think I know the most important strategies and can pass that experience forward. Still, I have so much to learn, but at least I know something now. ;-)

Now I gotta think what sub to get, really. :)
