One of the things I hate is when someone posts in a thread ask about something just to say they don't participate in that activity. For instance, if you asking "Who's your favorite rapper" and you post "I don't listen to rap", shouldn't that be considered spam? "What's your favorite type of meat?" "I don't eat meat" Yeah? I mean theoretically it has nothing to do with the topic at hand. It just pisses me off. So yeah. Could we like... start yelling at people about doing this?

plz

Shlup

It answers the question, so its not spam.

What're you trying to do here? Shall we go around saying "That answer is not satisfactory, please proceed to the <s>gas chamber</s> showers"?

Shoeberto

It's something I've noticed, too.

It just seems like a waste. It's kind of like replying to a thread with just a smilie or something like "heh." Which, last I heard (two years ago), was frowned upon.

It is kind of annoying, but I guess they're just "adding" to their "postcount"

As if that's necessary.

Shlup
06-10-2004, 07:15 PM
I don't see how its like just posting a smilie or saying "heh." Saying "I don't like rap" or "I don't eat meat" answers the question, and is a valid post.

Personally, I don't mind it at all.

Agent Proto
06-10-2004, 07:21 PM
I don't care about it either, but as a thread starter, I would prefer to see answers like "Yeah, I like "so-and-so" because "for some reason"" rather than "I don't like "so-and-so""

If they are answer "I don't like..." they better explain why instead of just leaving it as "I don't like..."

Shlup
06-10-2004, 07:32 PM
That's more of an issue with annoying people than something the staff really needs to get involved in. We can't police everyone to be sure they're answers are good enough for the thread starter.

Baloki
06-10-2004, 07:39 PM
Yeah, I don't like replying....

Sorry, that wasn't funny but its not really upto the post starter to decide whos right and wrong is it? Thats why they trick knights into sorting it. And I thought Postcounts were disabled to ordinary members, only knights could see them....

Raistlin

Well, since 90% of the threads in GC are pointless and wastes of space("what's your favorite type of meat?" is a perfect example), I think those kind of replies are rather appropriate.

Cz
06-10-2004, 08:55 PM
Let's face it, the majority of those threads are created through utter boredom. No-one actually sets out to learn the favourite meats of others, they just start a random topic to create some activity. If nobody cares about the question, why should anybody care about the answer?

I never read those sorts of posts, unless there's a poll (Hint: compulsory polls in every thread), or an actual discussion going on. Sorting through 3 pages of single word replies isn't fun.

Raistlin

Czanthor: that fits my definition of spam. If no one cares, if no one really reads it, then it shouldn't be there in the first place.

But I already had a big argument about that months ago. *shrugs*

I agree with Czanthor, I don't understand why people are so picky about what people post in their threads. I don't give a rats what people put in my threads. It's not like I own it or anything. It's not like I actually care how people respond. It's not like I actually remember starting the thread in the first place.

Actually come to think of it I do care, especially when it's in one of my threads about drinking and someone just replies with "I don't drink". About half the staff do that. :smash:

It's not like I actually remember starting the thread in the first place.

That's what Alcoholism will do for you.

06-10-2004, 10:06 PM
As long as it relates to the topic, it shouldn't matter. As long as it's not spam, it shouldn't matter. If someone replies to a thread entitled "Your favourite alcoholic beverage" with a comment like "I don't drink, as I don't enjoy alcohol", why penalize them for it? The poster in question is simply expressing his/her opinion on the subject. If it's really off-topic, then fair enough, but people shouldn't let little things like this annoy them.

If people became annoyed with their friends/acquaintances in the offline world for replying to a conversation in this manner, they would be labelled as being uncaring and mean. The same should apply here. People who complain about short posts which are on topic are moaning about nonsensical matters.

I agree with ShlupQuack, and Raistlin here, and I think Czanther just about summed it up with:

"Let's face it, the majority of those threads are created through utter boredom. No-one actually sets out to learn the favourite meats of others, they just start a random topic to create some activity. If nobody cares about the question, why should anybody care about the answer?"

In the end, is it really a big deal? If this forum starts becoming too strict and fussy about post quality, people won't want to come here =P If it's about the topic it is valid to the topic, in my opinion.

It doesn't annoy me. Why should it? It's just some guy you'll never meet, posting his opinion no one cares about, on the Internet everyone gathers at. Things like this should not annoy you. If they do, go out and try to save the whales or feed hungry children, please.

It's annoying sure, but not everything that is annoying should be disallowed. Those types of posts are a lot better than some of the other things they could say.

I don't reply to threads, therefore this post is irrelevant and also cannot actually exist.

No, really... the fact that someone's life doesn't include the specified activity can be relevant sometimes.

"What's your favourite FF game?"

"I don't have a clear favourite, although VI and VII are equally enjoyable to me."

Doesn't answer the question, but tells you a lot about the poster's interests and their undeniably fine taste.

This is an MB, not a questionaire. "PersonA asks question, then people file in one at a time, answer question, and file out"; that's not very interesting is it?

First off...they're not 'stupid threads'
Eg. My sock thread.
I agree with Spiff. I mean I hate it when someone posts in that thread jus to say..."i'm not wearing any socks". It's so dumb.
I jus find it irritating. I mean my sock thread is serious stuff for me...
But hey if nothing is done about it. It's ok. I'm fine with it. I jus agree with Spiff on this one. But don't go closing my thread ok? :riiight:

"I don't eat meat" is as good and topic related answer as "I like pig meat" is; it tells poster's opinion/fondness to meat/whatever and has <i>everything</i> to do with topic. People like to post what they like about this certain thing in these topics, so why would it be bad to express that you don't like it? ( i.e. 'i don't like meat' ) I don't see it pointless at all. Same goes with Ki Ki's socks topic: she's asking what kind of socks we're wearing, and if someone replies that she/he isn't wearing a socks is just as good reply as any, because at least its' related.

However, if someone aimed topic at certain group, for example, a topic or first post would indicate: "For those who lives in Europe" and someone would reply: "I don't live in Europe" would be just stupid and pointless.

That's the huge difference I see, but I really don't care. :)
