Okay, me and my friend have been having a bit of an argument. This may sound stupid, but is it lifa, or Iifa? I won't say who supports which term, so I can say that I was right once I figure out the real answer. :p

I would imagine it being Lifa, since it produces mist which 'gives life' to beasts across the lands.

It's I-I-F-A Iifa. This is indisputable.

Score. I was right. My friend thought for some reason that they just didn't capitalize the 'l' in "lifa". And I really was right.

It seems as if I further prove my omniscience.

It is Iifa in the English version, but it is Lifa in my (German) version...confusing.

I always tought it was Lifa, but now it's Iifa, but it can be Lifa, because it can be spelled lifa, or it's iifa. Oh, god it's getting confusing  . Oh, I must get some aspirine, my head is going to hurt very much if I must think about this.

It's Iifa (iifa). I once had a huge debate with Nemesis the Warlock about this, and I had loads of screenshots to prove that the first letter is an "i". It makes no sense that Square would spell it with a lowercase L every time when it's clearly a name. Even the "Tree" part in the name Iifa Tree is spelled with a capital T. The text on the first FMV on Disc 1 has the text "Iifa", and it clearly looks like a capital "I" there. Although Nemesis managed to misread that as a "T" (Tifa?) even with my screenshot being there. :rolleyes2

Nother proof that whoever translated the game into German did a horrible job, changing the I into a L. Nest time I start playing IX, I'll choose english language, I just hate what they done to the names and dialogues in the German version. *kicks translator*

we've already discussed the spelling of the tree, it doesnt matter what you say, whether you like it or not you spell it I-I-F-A

When u first enter the Iifa tree, you can even see this in the special font it uses to show the name. Its Iifa! get over it!

Hehe at the beginning, I thought it was Tifa. =)

Undesputably Iifa, although it's a horrible name. I definitely preferred when I thought it was Lifa :p

Question is, did they *intend* it to be Iifa? Lifa makes a lot more sense to me, with all that about "giving life" and such. Maybe it was a translation issue, or perhaps someone with a better grasp of Japanese could explain what 'Iifa' is supposed to mean.

You can obviously tell, compare the capital 'L' to the captial 'I' in FFIX. Plus it says Iifa in the strategy guide.

"e-fa" or "eye-fa" I reackon. I like the later one too.

I always pronounced it "eye-ee-fa" due to the double 'i' in there.

Anyway. I used to think it was Lifa too for some reason I'll never really know. Maybe I was just telling myself that it was lower-case to help with pronounciation.

I agree.

And uh, yeah. It's Iifa (http://foolsgold.kicks-ass.net/forum/showthread.php?threadid=5558).

Blarg, I was going to link to that thread too. And now that I checked the thread, I forgot that I had already removed the pictures. I guess I'll upload them back. As for pronouncing stuff, Iifa would be pronounced "ee-fa(h)" in Finnish so it would make sense. Lifa (pronounced "life-ah"?) would be harder for me to pronounce, and knowing what the tree is supposed to do, Life Tree wouldn't make sense anyway, IMHO.

EDIT: Okay, it is called the Tree of Life, although its purpose is to bring death to Gaia. I took one more screenshot which proves it's Iifa with two i's. Here we go, people:

Case closed, I'd say.

Lifa sounds better, but it's clearly Iifa. I used to think it was Lifa, because of the "Tree of Life" which would be ironic, considering what the Iifa Tree actually is and does.

I thought Lifa is a spell. If they call it Lifa Tree, it would create many paradoxes and misunderstandings.

I'll stick to Iifa.

It figures that a weird looking tree would have a weird name..

I used to think it was the Lifa Tree until my friend downloaded the FF font, it is clearly the Iifa Tree.

Don't have a screenshot or anything, but here's is the ultimate proof. When you first visit an area, you know how it shows the name of the location? Well, when you visit the Iifa tree to unlock the seal with Eiko, it clearly displays the name as "Iifa Tree." But that's the ultimate proof, even though I already knew what it was.
