If you've played Suikoden, get Suikoden II. If you haven't, get Xenogears.

He said that he meant to put down Xenogears, if you read his post.

Ouch!

I haven't played either through, but I do own Xenogears. I've heard a lot more about Xenogears being a great game and almost nothing about Suikoden II.

Suikoden II is the best RPG ever made. Period. I know plenty of people that have played it, and I honestly don't know anyone that doesn't like it.

For Xenogears, you either love it or hate it. I, personally, don't like it.

Suikoden is the best RPG series, hands down.

Suikoden is winning the poll. :p

I've never played the Suikoden series, but I really want to. I absolutely love Xenogears, though. I really don't see how anything can top it ('cept FF7, of course).

Well, either way, I'm sticking with Suikoden II.

Suikoden II is alright. It's not great. The best part of the game is Luca Blight. After that's over and done with nothing really motivated me to keep playing (except the Neclord Battle Theme that song is SO DAMN SWEET)

Xenogears was excellent. Wonderful story. I didn't care much for the battle system or the gears.

This is what it comes down to for me:

Xenogears storyline

VS.

Luca Blight and the Neclord Battle Song

Suikoden = Linear
Xenogears = Curved

therefore, being a fan of curved storylines, I go for Xenogears, tho Luca Blight > All

Grahf > Luca Blight

I haven't played Suikoden II yet (I haven't won the lottery so I can buy it), but everything is less than Grahf.

"Hahahahahaha, die pig!!!!!" *kill*

Luca Blight > all

*spoilers ahead*
Well, Luca Blight's the only human character I know that have to go through 18 people, dozens of arrows and a one-on-one fight with the main character in order to die. Best thing is that he has no True Rune or special powers on him...

Grahf is just...powerful :P

That's total bullshit. Sorry, but it is. Saying Suikoden II has a completely linear storyline is like saying Lunar SSSC's plot is too prosaic. None of the plot twists are of the size of Xenogears's, true, but there ARE plot twists, and the story is much more complicated than on the surface. Also, if you played Suikoden first, the plot development of Suikoden II is that much more rewarding.

However, you are right that Luca Blight > all, as pretty much anyone who has played Suikoden II knows.

I suppose the Beast Rune doesn't qualify then?

That's actually one bit of his story that I didn't completely understand, though.

He didn't have the Beast Rune "equipped" to him while you were fighting.

The Beast Rune was passed down the Blight family, and I believe it's actually sealed into the Blight Castle(L'Renouille). Ol' what's-his-face unseals it at the end of the game - hence, the final boss battle. And earlier, Luca Blight had unsealed it to ravage Muse.

That's the only explanation I could think of, anyway.

Yeah, the beast rune requires a blood sacrifice before it does anything. So he has to have his strength in order to slaughter enough people for it.

That's a much better explanation than what I'd thought of (he had it, was able to use it, and didn't use it). Fair enough. ;)

Agreed.

I have Suikoden I lying around the house somewhere but I'm reluctant to play because I'm not a fan of having over 100 characters to a game.
