Anywho, what is it with this game. I just lost to Rye for some bizarre reason because I wasn't paying attention. Other than that, we've been playing to a draw.

I assume people here know the strategies in order to ensure games end up in a draw (or win, if the opponent is teh sux). So how do you win often?

:o

I tend to win the first couple of times I play people, since I have an unusual strategy, that fools people easily. The trick is to go for opposite corners first, rather than the centre square.

I don't play very often, though, as the person going first gets too much of an advantage for it to be a fair competition.

but if you go corners I'll take the middle and ruin your win. So it's often a constant game of draws :D

I won twice, actually. :D! I try to take the 2nd box down. It helps a lot.

You take 2 opposite corners and then one of the remaining corners meaning they cannot block you as there are 2 possible win senarios, only works if you go first.

If I take centre, then middle right, that stops you from winning, as you need 4 moves to win, and I only need 3.

It's almost as bad as noughts and crosses...

Not quite, though.

If I'm playing with someone stupid, then I usually win. But when you're playing with someone who actually pays attention, it's always a cats game. D:

explain the origins of the term 'cat's game', as I am too lazy to look it up.

Plus it makes this thread is conclusive evidence that pokemon are always right'...I mean comprehensive

Not quite, though.Isn't TicTacToe and Noughts and Crosses the same game though?

xD

I remember trying to program a TTT game in HS. I think I did a if/else nest that went to eternity. I'm sure there are faster ways like assigning numbers to each taken space, etc etc but blah.

Why is a tie in Tic-Tac-Toe called a Cat's Game?:

I think a tie in Tic Tac Toe is a Cat's Game because Tac spelled backwards is Cat.

I believe this comes from a tie being considered a "scratch game". Call
it a "Cat's Game" if you will.
Cats scratch.

Tic Tac Toe ties are called cats game because no matter how hard a cat tries
to win against its tale it never wins and yet has fun

I believe that it is a cat-mouse game.if not one of the two players gets
the point making it a tie game. therefore, cat gets mouse(point).

It's a game of skills the cat goes one way and the mouse goes another. So
when it's a tie that's what it means cat's game. A cat and mouse
chase. When mouse gets away the cat looses. And the mouse gets away. A game
that goes in any direction just like a cat and mouse.

There was a tic on a tac on a cats toe.

Because cats scratch

Silly ask jeeves, not giving me a straight answer. I have no idea =D

I win all the time. The only time I even play is when some kid at work begs, and they always suck.

Every single game I've played since middle school has ended in a draw. It's a conspiracy.

You should've asked Smarterchild! But he wouldn't have given you a straight answer either.

Me: Why is a tie in tic-tac-toe called a cat's game?
SmarterChild: Hmm... You know, I'm not quite sure anymore.
Me: You never give me an straight answer :-(
SmarterChild: You seem overly concerned with my sexuality. Interesting...

That's an actual quote. xDDDD

The trick to tic tac toe is to have three of your marks go in one direction.

I think there should be a 3D version of noughts and crosses. It would actually create a decent chance of someone winning.

It would be near impossible to block a lot of victory methods though. :(

At least every game wouldn't end in a draw.
